It’s out! Super Crate Box is out! Go skedaddling over to the site immediately and download yourself the finest and most frenetic freeware game we’ve seen all… month? Perhaps, perhaps. I’ve posted the trailer again below, just in case you missed me talking about this excitedly earlier in the week. Now you can talk about it excitedly yourselves!
You know, the Disc Gun gets the bad press, but I’d say the Mines are the cruellest weapon in this game. Getting to a crate at the top of a crowded level, armed with nothing but mines? That’s a very bad time.

So… it’s free? Sweet!
22/10/2010 at 16:02 Shazbut says:
I practically had to tear myself away just now.
I kept saying “It’s EASY! Why am I not really trying?” after dying about 300 times
22/10/2010 at 16:03 Aubrey says:
This is good. Very very good.
22/10/2010 at 16:06 Tiktaalik says:
Is it insanely difficult or do I just suck? Or both. That’s a possibility too I guess…
22/10/2010 at 16:15 noobnob says:
Wow, this game is surprisingly good. The chaos of the last trailer didn’t really convince me, but damn, you really have to think fast about your positioning depending of the weapon that you get from the next crate, you have to manage the baddies before they get to the fire, you have to run away from the enraged big ones that you have carelessly let through…everything snowballs so quickly, and it’s very satisfying.
There’s a weapon unlock system that seems to work based on the total number of crates you grab from your short playthroughs, so the more you play this game, lower are the chances of getting the weapon that you really need at the right moment. YOU WILL HATE THE DISC GUN.
22/10/2010 at 16:26 Ondrej says:
Is anybody else unable to play with a keyboard if some other kind of direct input device (like a G25) is plugged in? Because I can’t play it unless I fight the force (G25 feedback force, that is)…
22/10/2010 at 22:27 mipiro says:
Yes. It does that when I have a gamepad connected.
After 2+ hours of playing, my hands are dying. I am typing this with my nose.
22/10/2010 at 16:29 TeeJay says:
Re-downloaded it twice now, extracted with WinRar, but whenever I try and run it my PC freezes up just after the title appears, no error messages or anything. I am not aware of any other issues with my PC so I’m wondering if anyone has a suggestion of what to try next?
22/10/2010 at 16:31 Ondrej says:
GIve it some time after starting up, it will eventually unfreeze.
22/10/2010 at 16:38 Atic Atac says:
erm….WOW…where’s the donate button?
This is just pure genius.
22/10/2010 at 16:40 Atic Atac says:
Disc Gun…….FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
22/10/2010 at 16:40 mordac says:
I only wish I could turn off auto jump. That would make it this game even better!
22/10/2010 at 16:47 westyfield says:
I actually quite like the Disc Gun.
Sorry.
23/10/2010 at 10:43 BooleanBob says:
It becomes worth its weight in gold once you unlock SFMT (Super Fother Mucking Tough?) mode.
This is a very, very good game. Just fantastic design, and I’m not talking about the pixelated squid men.

“This one has a tiny bit of recoil”
22/10/2010 at 17:47 The head Thorax of Abdomen says:
Couldn’t get past the tutorial; my little fingers are not frantic enough, apparently.
22/10/2010 at 18:22 panther says:
Just quit it and start a normal game. Even if your really, really bad, you can progress and unlock new weapons/maps.
22/10/2010 at 18:32 The head Thorax of Abdomen says:
Help me be less of an imbecile. I look at the menu and see:
TUTORIAL
STATS
OPTIONS
CREDITS
QUIT
Where is the option to start a new game?
22/10/2010 at 19:04 noobnob says:
You have to complete the tutorial by collecting 10 crates, no way around it I guess.
22/10/2010 at 19:30 The head Thorax of Abdomen says:
Made it through the tutorial. Towards the end it respawned me right then and there rather than starting the thing over again. Funsies!
22/10/2010 at 18:46 Asskicker says:
It’s not just you mate, I’m also asking myself the same question. :P
22/10/2010 at 18:52 Himself says:
STC is not as high, though.
22/10/2010 at 19:00 Tei says:
I can’t see the video.
Something about “You need flash 10″.
22/10/2010 at 19:20 Reefpirate says:
You can do it! I failed a number of times at the tutorial, and I think eventually it just let me through… I guess there’s a minimum required to get past it, but just do a little practice!
This game rocks.
22/10/2010 at 19:26 Francisco says:
head thorax. It is your first time, you got to play the tutorial!
And indeed, even if you are bad you can unlock stuff. Im so donating for the guys.
22/10/2010 at 19:35 Lendemain says:
“All right! The RPS guys have rarely led me wrong. Can’t wait to play. Let’s see if it’ll work on my Mac. Hmm. The ‘info’ section doesn’t say anything about Mac or PC compatibility. Maybe it’s in Java, like Minecraft? Let’s download it anyway and see. OK, so it’s a .rar file. Doesn’t tell me anything in particular. It’s finished downloading–now to unzip it–
Well, that was disappointing.”
Oh, well. Can’t have it all. Have fun, guys!
22/10/2010 at 22:16 Forch says:
Your fault for being a mac user on a PC gaming blog.
22/10/2010 at 19:58 Taillefer says:
I think my hand will seize up if I keep playing SFMT mode. The disc gun becomes very handy, and the minigun which resulted in my death just as often is equally as useful. The bazooka becomes too cumbersome and slow; if you don’t switch quickly you get overrun.
Surprisingly fun.
22/10/2010 at 20:02 Nero says:
Very fun and addicting game, though I wished there was control customization because non of the Gamepad configs gives me the jump and shoot buttons on the buttons that I want. Still, great fun!
22/10/2010 at 21:28 raskolnik says:
Freezes when I die. I get the “x number of crates to unlock a new weapon” message, I hit a button, and then it locks up. Music keeps playing, but eventually have to ctrl+alt+delete to get out of it (task manager says it’s not responding).
Anyone else having this problem?
23/10/2010 at 01:23 Rami says:
Rami, one of the Vlambeer team here, usually that means you didn’t extract the game, didn’t put downloaddll.dll in the game folder or are not allowing the game to connect to the internet even though there is an active connection (a firewall could do that).
If the game keeps doing this anyway, please let us know at feedback@vlambeer.com and we’ll see if we can do something about it.
23/10/2010 at 03:02 Thants says:
Why is it connecting to the internet?
23/10/2010 at 03:29 Rami says:
To upload your highscores to supercratebox.com, and to update the ‘total crates worldwide’ counter at the bottom of the website, too.
22/10/2010 at 21:31 Army of None says:
Bloody hard, bloody good, bloody addictive. Yes, it’s that bloody. I’ve unlocked SFMT (whatever htat stands for) on all 3 levels, but can’t get to 20 on any of them to unlock ambush yet.
22/10/2010 at 22:11 Polysynchronicity says:
This is what I have learned:
Useless:
pistols
dual pistols
flamethrower
shotgun
katana
Incredibly powerful, practically useless:
laser rifle
mines
grenade launcher
minigun
Useful:
revolver
disc gun
bazooka
machine gun
22/10/2010 at 22:17 Forch says:
Laser gun’s not useless at all, katana isn’t either. My least favorite is the grenade launcher, my favorite has to be the flamethrower or the katana.
22/10/2010 at 23:10 Armyofnone says:
I actually love the flamethrower. You can light up a pathway (or where they drop down) and pretty much have ti clear of the little guys. I’m at 19 crates on the hard mode on moon temple, mostly because of smart use of that +revolver luck. grenade’s are alright, if you can bank it and destroy a large group+a big guy. Dual pistols have to be my least favorite. So… wimpy :/
23/10/2010 at 02:27 JackShandy says:
I thought the laser gun was useless at first too, but then I realised that the warm-up laser actually insta-kills anything it touches.
23/10/2010 at 02:31 squidlarkin says:
And I actually love the grenade launcher. Requires some finesse, but there aren’t many problems it won’t solve if you use it just right.
22/10/2010 at 23:10 Lambchops says:
I learned this game wasn’t for me when I was strugglung with tutorial. Have absolutely no desire to even start the normal game. I can see how a lot of people will enjoy this and I definitely suggest giving it a go (especially as it’s FREE!) but it isn’t my cup of milk at all.
22/10/2010 at 23:18 Lambchops says:
Apparently I’m ‘srugglung’ with typing too!
12/11/2010 at 07:45 adonf says:
Hahaha “strugglung” is my new favourite word, and yes I know this post is like a month old
22/10/2010 at 23:21 Olivaw says:
Man, FUCK the disc gun.
Fuck it straight to HELL.
22/10/2010 at 23:43 D says:
Arrow keys work in the menu, not in the game. Stuck at first tutorial. Might have something to do with having 2 keyboards? Unfortunately one is a joystick emulating as a keyboard, so it has no arrow keys. Not gonna reprogram or unplug it.
23/10/2010 at 00:55 Shazbut says:
This is fearsomely good and deserves money.
23/10/2010 at 01:54 MD says:
Fun!
The disc gun got a laugh out of me, too.
“We hereby sincerely apologise.”
-Hmm, I wonder what they mean by… OH! :D
23/10/2010 at 07:00 MD says:
After playing this some more: this is freaking amazing. I’ve gone from feeling utterly jaded about games to loving them again.
I don’t think Old Man Murray would have liked it though… (http://www.oldmanmurray.com/features/39.html)
25/10/2010 at 09:55 Vlambeer says:
Yeah, we were really sad he doesn’t review anymore, we would’ve loved to see him tackle this one. I think we would’ve gotten a negative score.
23/10/2010 at 02:25 JackShandy says:
I remember playing the prototype of this. Man, it’s improved immensly. The best change is how the fire at the bottom of the level doesn’t kill the monsters anymore, it just makes them angry. Forces you to use your weapons to beat them back from the bottom of the level.
Fantastic stuff. I DEMAND MULTIPLAYER!

@Forch
I used to have a PC, which is how I came to know this site. If I knew of a Mac gaming site that was even half as good as RPS, I’d be there. Once this computer dies, it’s back to PC for me.
24/10/2010 at 11:46 Vlambeer says:
We understand the game runs great through both virtualisation or WINE for Mac OS X, so if you want to give it a go, that might help.
23/10/2010 at 18:07 Heimmrich says:
LOVED the game but so many freakin’ errors. It’s like a time contest, how many crates I can collect before it closes itself. (btw the answer is 50)
23/10/2010 at 23:45 Vlambeer says:
Is the error after every time you die? If so, don’t forget to unpack all files in the download into the same directory.
24/10/2010 at 05:57 Heimmrich says:
No. It’s at randomly times and appears in different ways. Sometimes there’s a log, sometime’s it just closes itself, sometimes there’s a windows error. Probably conflicting with something because one time I had a bsod.
23/10/2010 at 21:08 theunshaven says:
Man, I want to like this, but I can’t make it work.
Game starts fine, but the first level of the tutorial won’t recognise that the keyboard exists except to Esc out. This makes me a sad hamster.
(Reads thread more closely)
Huh. Might be because the joystick is attached. Bummer.

I cackled when I first fired the minigun. ^_^
23/10/2010 at 23:43 Vlambeer says:
To those suffering from keyboard problems, we’re trying to get that fixed and will let you know through here, the website, Twitter (@Vlambeer) or Facebook when a patch is available.

Thank you! Are there any plans to add configurable controls? I’m not used to Z being Jump in platformers, and it’s really throwing me off. Also I hear it’s a problem for people with German keyboards.
26/10/2010 at 08:37 Vlambeer says:
We’re looking into that, but for now we’ve added CTRL as an alternative fire button and up as an alternative jump button. Hope that helps!

Steam version doesn’t come with downloaddll.dll, which is required for the leaderboards to work.
