It’s Random Question Time, Again

By Jim Rossignol on October 27th, 2010 at 9:53 am.

I’ve got a random question for you, readers. I’d like you to leave your answers in the comments section below, if you would be so kind.

What games did you spend money on in October? Please list anything you might have bought, PC or console, budget or full price, DLC, subscription, or microtransaction.

Go!

  1. Metro 2033: £5 new on EBay… Would have bought on Steam but it was £30

    report

    • Mudkipz says:

I bought 2 copies of Metro2033 for 5 euros (at a retail shop about 2months ago, I traded one, and gave one to a friend as I had preordered the game before it came out on Steam.)
I don’t think I have bought any games yet so far this October, going to buy Dogfighter though.

      report

    • Sam says:

You can add Metro 2033 to Steam wherever you buy it.

      report

    • Can you? I didn’t know that :) I shall do it :)

      report

    • I actually just got Metro 2033 too. Amazon had it for a tenner, and I had £6 credit there. Came with a free copy of RFG too, but I’ve already played that on the 360.

I also have got Civ5 and Alpha Protocol in pricing errors, costing £2.35 and £2.25 respectively.

Empire: Total War and DogFighter in sales.

I also swapped a spare license I had from a borderlands 4 pack for Arkham Asylum.

      Total spend ~£30/40

      report

    • Huggster says:

Metro 2033 is bound to your steam account anyway!
I found out the hard way buying s/h from ebay. Got refund though.

      report

    • Oh, I ordered a copy of New Vegas for £18 too, that is currently being shipped to me though.

      report

    • I bought Metro 2033 a little while ago for less than a tenner and was excited to discover it had RFG free with it.

      During October, I bought:

      L4D & L4D2 on Steam
The Tales Of Monkey Island on Steam
      Outcast on GOG.com
StarCraft II: Wings Of Liberty (retail)

Oh, and GOG.com gifted me Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games. Does that count?

      report

    • Starky says:

Tales of monkey island complete pack in a steam sale – and that’s it.

Bought a LOT of games in September and have not played half of them yet.

      report

    • Starky says:

Oops didn’t mean to reply, oh well.

      report

    • Unregistered User says:

      From Steam:
      Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY
      Numen: Contest of Heroes
Monkey Island Complete Pack (It sucks, I regret even spending the 5 bucks for it when on sale)

      From Good Old Games:
      Temple of Elemental Evil
      Planescape: Torment
      Outcast

Steam stuff was all on sale, only thing I can say is that Telltale’s Monkey island series is that it just fails to capture the humor and atmosphere of the original series.

      report

  2. Wubble69 says:

    MInecraft

    Monthly Warcraft Subscription

    report

  3. Lilliput King says:

Dogfighter, New Vegas, Fallout3 Goatee, Arcanum, Outcast, Arma 2.

    Some kind of consumer whore.

    report

  4. Rich says:

A shiny new 22″ widescreen LCD for my PC. Replaces the 10 year old 15″, 2 mile wide, 3 ton CRT that sat on my desk before.

Also, Sword of the Stars: Complete Edition because although I’d bought SOTS as a download in September (I think), I wanted the add-ons and realised it’d be cheaper to by the whole lot again.
Oh and Tales of Monkey Island.

    report

    • chokoladenudlen says:

Congratulations on the new monitor – that’s quite a leap in a single upgrade :)
15” is almost so oldschool that you might even be able to sell your old monitor to some victorian/steampunk cosplayers :-P

      report

  5. Seniath says:

    £8.99 for my WoW sub.

Yeah, that’s pretty much it. I’ve spent my downtime catching up on the mountain of games I bought during the Steam Summer Sale.

    report

  6. BooleanBob says:

Tales of Monkey Island on Steam for a trivial amount of money in the sale.
    Batteries for a friend’s wii-mote.
    Um
Probably going to pick up BB: Legendary, but because I’m a feckless internet user with the attention span of a [insert insect of preference here] I’m still awaiting one of the big gaming sites to tell me it’s available. Could just check the Cyanide site, or wikipedia, or amazon, but… no. Can’t be bothered, I’m afraid.

    report

    • BooleanBob says:

I lied; I could be arsed. Have just spent £17.99 with alarmingly little effort on a shiny new copy of BB.

      report

  7. Blandford says:

    Fallout New Vegas.
    That’s it!

    report

  8. apsaps says:

Four crate keys in TF2 :(

    report

  9. Rinox says:

    - Fallout: New Vegas (PC)
    - 4 keys in the Mann Co store on TF2
    - was gifted Red Faction: Guerilla during the steam sale

    That’s it I think.

    report

  10. Brumisator says:

    Nothing.
    I’m poor :’(

    report

    • minipixel says:

      worry not :)
a place to start looking for some

      report

    • Mad Hamish says:

Me too. Not the poor thing. Well I am poor I guess. But I’m poorer in time. I’m still playing games I bought months ago(hell, years ago, only just stopped playing Stalker). Do you people play all these games you buy? I bought Amnesia over a month ago and still haven’t been able to give it more that a few hours.

      report

    • Sam says:

Nothing, too. For reasons of time-poverty (and also, frankly, I’ve not seen anything I desperately need to have, either. I even seem to be immune to Minecraft’s lure…).

      report

    • Sam says:

Oh, but at the end of September, I bought some old PS2 games I’ve never played (MGS2, Viewtiful Joe, Devil May Cry) because they were exceptionally cheap. (This is the thing about consoles: there’s no real reason to buy a new one if you’re already massively “behind” in releases from the last generation…)

      report

    • LionsPhil says:

      Nothing.
      I bought everything worth playing.

      report

  11. DuckSauce says:

Just Dogfighter with the €1,35 deal. Been keeping myself busy with League of Legends this month.
    The Ball is tempting though.

    report

  12. tengblad says:

Fallout: New Vegas (through G2Play.net. Is this considered morally questionable?)
    DogFighter (Steam Sale)
    Eternal Sonata, PS3 (Zavvi.co.uk sale)
    Valkyria Chronicles, PS3 (Zavvi.co.uk sale)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, PS3 (Zavvi.co.uk Mega Monday sale)
Vanquish, Xbox360 (Zavvi.co.uk Mega Monday sale)
    Fable 3, Xbox360 (Pre-order)
Super Meat Boy, Xbox360 (XBLA sale/introductionary price cut)
A crapload of iPhone games for 0.59£ a pop.

And that’s only so far. I’m still planning on getting Rock Band 3 + the wireless keyboard this month. And maybe Enslaved: Journey to the West for the 360…

    report

    • Rinox says:

Jeez. You win the lottery or something? ;-) Most people I know with the money to spend on that many games work too much to get it to actually play them – and conversely, those who have the time don’t usually have the cash.

      report

    • Do you actually work? (most likely due to the total cost of that lot) however no one can realistically play that lot. That’s ludicrous.

      report

    • tengblad says:

Yup, I have a job. At work right now. :-)

What can I say, I buy the stuff I think is interesting and then play it whenever I have the time. I have a decent salary and don’t pay too much in rent so I have the money to spend. Not my fault October has been jam-packed with interesting releases!

      report

    • Baboonanza says:

In my experience I used to be able to work, afford as many games as I wanted and had time to play pretty much all of them, even while doing a lot of socialising. What changed?

Girlfriend -> Small decrease in game time.
Moved in with girfriend -> Massive decrease in game time.
Bought house -> Substantial reduction in money and further decrease in game time.

Now it might take me 3 months to get through a game like Fallout: NV.

      For the future:
Children -> No game time, no money.

      report

    • Baboonanza says:

And te only game I’ve bought this month is DogFighter.

      report

    • Baboonaza, stop copying my life! My girlfriend is wanting children, my game time is already on it’s arse!!

      report

    • Huggster says:

There is only one thing I prefer doing than games playing, so my SO always has the upper hand there.
Games just cannot scratch that itch!

      report

    • MajorManiac says:

      Baboonanza and clownst0pper,

I’m in the same boat, although my baby is now 15 months old. Perhaps people like us should start a club or something.

      report

    • Baboonanza says:

We could start a club, but we wouldn’t have time to attand any meetings!

      report

    • michaelar says:

  14. President Weasel says:

King’s Bounty Crossworlds (including Armoured Princesss) – that’s RPS’s fault
    Dogfighter – that’s RPS’s fault
Blood Bowl legenday edition – that’s only tangentially RPS’s fault (blame the nice people of the forum)
possibly a £10 donation for Dwarf Fortress, but I think that was actually September.

    Quiet month for me.

Bob, it’s available to download from the Cyanide site, but the activation codes aren’t available yet. Midnight tonight, I think. It’s also available on Play for “bargains bargains, much cheapness”

    report

  15. Kast says:

Minecraft (online), Fallout New Vegas CE (Game store), Assassin’s Creed 2 (Steam), Civilisation V (Steam)

All the above are PC and bought at full price.

  16. Crescend says:

Haven’t bought anything, my steam list is still full of unfinished games from steams summer sales..

    Vanquish – PS3

    report

  23. Memphis-Ahn says:

Arcanum, Outcast, The Polynomial. For now.

    report

  24. Coren says:

    October was a slow month.

Costume Quest on PSN, full price, but full price’s not all that much.
Alpha Protocol on GreenManGaming when there was the misprice thing (would never have bought it otherwise)
Bloody Good Time on pre-order @ D2D, for the full price of ~£4 .
My girlfriend bought Raving Rabbids TV party for the WIi, does that count? I guess this counts as budget, even though it was as expensive as all the above games combined. It was much cheaper than at release, anyway.

And I’m pretty sure that’s it.

    report

  25. Schaulustiger says:

    Hmm, let me see…

    DeathSpank (Steam)
    Shank (Steam)
Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic (Steam)
    Icewind Dale Complete (GOG.com)

    aaaaand…

Puzzle Quest HD for the iPad. I have now played this title on four platforms (PSP, PC, dumbphone and iPad) and I still can’t get enough of it.

    report

  26. Lord Uber Dowzen (from New Zealand) says:

    Baldur’s Gate

    report

  27. dartt says:

    I’ve been good this month:

    A four pack of DogFighter.

Might buy Super Meat Boy tonight.

    report

  28. Moocher says:

Was gifted a WoW sub card and minecraft.
Bought Revenge of the Titans, Titan Attacks, Droid Assault, and Ultratron.

Might as well list Dogfighter and AI War as well as I am terribly close to buying both.

    report

  29. Sam Crisp says:

    I love answering questions!

    - The Longest Journey and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura from GOG.com
    - Shank and DeathSpank on Steam
    - I don’t have an iPhone, but I gifted Spider: Secret of Bryce Manor and Bit.Trip Beat to a friend who has an iPod touch.

Oh, and I’ll probably pick up DogFighter, but I’m waiting to see what else goes cheap in the THQ Steam sale. Quinns and others dissuaded me from getting New Vegas, although it was mostly because I’m trying to not buy games with upcoming exams.

    report

  30. monkehhh says:

    Fallout New Vegas
    Super Meat Boy
    Costume Quest
Microsoft points to buy Super Meat Boy and Costume Quest (magical currency!)
    Commandos Complete (2 quid!)

    report

  31. Mike says:

The Mass Effect 2 DLC – The Shadow Broker. Very good indeed! Due to uni I’m afraid that’s it.

    report

  32. Lanthala says:

    * 4 copies of 4 Heroes of Light on the DS (one for a friend, one for me, one for husband, and one for sister-in-law)
    * $10 Kingdom of Loathing “donation” for the Familiar of the Month
    * WoW subscription
    * Xbox Live subscription

There might have also been the purchase of an extra Xbox controller, but I honestly can’t remember whether that was October or September. They’re all blurred together in my head.

    report

  33. AukonDK says:

Galcon Fusion $10, L4D2 in the sale 5 quid and Minecraft!

    report

  34. Dogfighter for £1 +5p fun tax.
Red Faction: Guerilla for whatever steam were charging on Monday.
I spent some money in the F2P MMO Perfect World International as well.

I probably would have bought New Vegas if it wasn’t for the fact that waiting for the Goatee Edition will be far better value for money than the £60 it will cost for the game and the DLC otherwise.

    report

  35. Theory says:

    Men of Waaaar.

    “Guys. This is bad.”

    report

  36. Fallout new vegas (on the xbox), lost planet 2 (xbox), blood bowl legendary edition (PC), super meat boy (xbox), comic jumper (xbox), temple of elemental evil (PC), race for the galaxy (boardgame – bought due to RPS, i might add!)

Not been a month for buying much on the PC for me (and also looks like an expensive month, looking back on it!). I got a good deal on fallout, and I enjoy playing it from a sofa, so xboxed it, even though it probably would look better on my pc, but i also think that famously buggy games will be more stable on console ?(easier to bug test due to single platform?). Lost planet I got for 1 euro from gamestop, so almost doesn’t count :-). Blood bowl – I run the divisions of death so thats a business expense ;-). Super meat boy is a lot of fun, as is comic jumper. They’d both be fine on pc, but i had some live points to spend NOW and they’re best with a joypad regardless of platform. I think thats it for this month?! Probably going to ease off on games for a bit. But I always say that and end up being swayed, so we’ll see – I wasn’t planning to get the new fallout game, for example, but a cheap price lured me in.

    report

    • Reading through the above comments, I also got alpha protocol from green man games for like £2.50 after a misprice (thought that was last month!) and I’ve bought a few iphone games for no more than 59p. Notably good purchases were stick golf and battle for wesnoth (bargain 200 hours of turn-based rpg-strategy on iphone for 59p?! Everyone should own this). :-)

      report

  37. pimorte says:

One TF2 key and a Pile O’ Gifts (22 or so dollars)

    report

  38. Minecraft
STALKER Radioactive addition (and that because I just completed SoC and was totally blown away)
    Assassins Creed 2
    Dogfighter

Oh – and looking at my Steam purchases it seems I went for Disciples II Gold which – if I’m honest – I’ll probably never play

    report

  39. Maarten says:

Some iPhone games (about 10 euro’s worth)

    TOMI on sale from Telltale
    L4D2 on Steam sale

    Alan Wake for 25
    Bionic Commando – 10 Euro

    XBL:
Some DLC for Mass Effect 2 on sale
    Comic Jumper
    Hydrophobia
    Super Meat Boy
    Lara Croft: GoL

Probably getting Fallout New Vegas next weekend as well.

The only thing i actually played for more than half an hour is Lara Croft…. >_<

    report

  40. Halo: Reach (XBox 360)
    Amnesia (PC)
    Dogfighter (PC)

This despite my PC being in storage for the last 6 months and until the end of November!

    report

  41. Phil H says:

No PC for me this month (Planescape Torment just missed the cut):

    Enslaved $60 USD
    Vanquish $35
    Castlevania: Lords of Shadow $30
    Angry Birds iPhone $1
    Magic Drop F $3

    report

  42. Javier-de-Ass says:

got retail box of NBA 2k11, on gamersgate I rebought fear2 (woho steamless fear2) and got guardians of graxia. icewinddale complete and templeofelementalevil from gog. and bought dcs a-10c warthog beta from dcs site. that’s it actually, my slowest month so far this year. will probably get a couple more games from gog before the weekend rolls around, and maybe a couple of things from the horror sale on gamersgate. probably darkness within 2, maybe cursed mountain or dark fall lost souls.

    report

  43. Badger says:

    The Polynomial- release day

    Xbox360 preowned:
    * Gears of War
    * Army of Two

    Xbox360 retail:
    * Alan Wake
    * Gears of War 2
    * Army of Two The 40th Day
    * Forza Motorsport 3
    * Final Fantasy XIII
    * Super Street Fighter IV
    * Red Dead Redemption
    * Ace Combat 6
    * X-Men Origins Wolverine
    * Guitar Hero Metallica (39,95 euro, instead of 100+ euro, on ibood a couple of days back)

    PC (disc):
    * Fallout New Vegas
    * Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days Limited Edition
    * Darksiders Hellbook Edition

    PC (digital, steam)
    * Alien Breed 2
    * Men of War Gold
    * Dogfighter (well, actually won the game in the 2nd developer chat on irc, was the 3rd person of 900+ to answer correctly)

I think I’m done buying games till 2013…

Titan Quest + Immortal throne (Steam) sale, got both for 2,49 euro or something, usually not much for Diablo clones, but this was so cheap, and I’d heard it was sort of good.

The Ball (Steam) thanks to you RPS.

Unfortunately, my new aquarium and my soon-to-be-born child, are actively competing for resources with games purchases.

I also bought all Puppygames games, also on sales.
Revenge of the Titans 50% off
and the other three in a single pack for 5€ if I remember correctly

      report

  50. id says:

…hm. I bought absolutely nothing, as it turns out: I spent this month playing the backlog of things I owned but hadn’t finished (damn those sales on Steam!), and replaying a few old favorites. I did order the first episode of Telltale’s new Back to the Future game, but that was free, and it’s not out yet, so it doesn’t really count as an October purchase either way.

Looking towards the end of the year, I’ve got New Vegas on my Christmas list, so I won’t be getting that ’til Dec. 24th at the earliest. I’ll probably get around to buying the Shadow Broker DLC for Mass Effect 2 in either November or December, depending on when I feel like reinstalling the game.

    report

  51. duncanthrax says:

The Witcher – extended edition directors cut

    report

  52. Okami says:

    Xbox360:

Halo:Reach – It’s one of the best designed single player FPS games ever made and everybody who claims otherwise hasn’t played it or probably thinks that Call of Duty games have good single player gameplay.

Dead Rising 2 – I just can’t bring myself to play the campaign, I always end up wearing a gimp suit driving around Zombies in wheel chairs.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Eskil Steenberg once said that every game developer should fire all their designers, because they can’t code and can’t make art and so they are worthless. C:LoS is a prime example of what happens when you don’t have level designers or let artists do the job of designers. The game might just be the best looking console game of this generation, but you’ll spend up to 15 minutes searching for your way out of almost every single screen – the player guidance and level design really is that bad. But at least you get to look at pretty stuff while looking for the exit.

Limbo – Prince of Persia as imagined by a disturbed teenager with “issues”.

Lara Croft: Guardian of Light – The best coop game ever.

    PC:

Red Faction Guerilla – bought it yesterday on Steam because it was dirt cheap. Haven’t played it yet.

Some russian RTS/RPG I’ve forgotten the name of on Steam. It was cheap, I played it for ten minutes, it sucked.

Fallout New Vegas – Quinns is wrong.

    report

    • Okami says:

Also a bunch of games on GoG, though I’m not quite sure which ones I bought in September and which in October.

Still saving up for a machine that can actually play starcraft II.
I’m completely playing starcraft I atm though. Should keep me busy for a couple of months (yeah, that should tell you something about how much ‘free time’ I have for gaming anyway)

    report

  54. minipixel says:

    report

  55. man-eater chimp says:

Minecraft and Dogfighter, also debating whether to get Shank or not but canney decide at this time.

I also got the Football Manager 2011 demo but no money was spent there.

  56. Giant, fussy whingebag says:

Fallout New Vegas (Zavvi – it still hasn’t shipped but they have taken my monies!)
    Planescape: Torment (GOG, obv)
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (GOG again, when it was on offer)

I would have done a Back to the Future pre-order, but, alas, I must wait until payday or reach the end of my agreed overdraft.

    report

  57. destx says:

    I bought a hat in TF2 :[

    report

  58. ynamite says:

    Only bought
    - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (I loved the demo but haven’t had time to play the game)
    - Outcast (played it for about half an hour but the interface *shudders* is it really worth playing? It would have to be really really really fucking good for me to play it when there is so much else to play and so little time!)

    Planning on getting this month:
    - Tales of Monkey Island Episode 1 (because the people on RTS say that it’s actually quite good)
    - Maybe Fable 3, but I have yet to decide
    - Maybe Halo: Reach, if I get bored of other games

I played Fallout: New Vegas at a friends house and I’m not impressed at all. Didn’t like Fallout 3 much and the same goes for New Vegas. I loved Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics (yes, I liked Tactics), but this new thing is just not my thing. Hope the MMO is any good.

Costume Quest really should’ve made it to PC as well, seems a bit odd for Double Fine to have this new direction and ignore sales channels like Steam and the other DD sites.
I’ve been considering Rock Band 3 but at those prices… I’ll have to wait for HMV to flog it off cheap.

Also, my last ‘big’ game was Lara Croft and the GOL preorder, end of last month. Only did that because you got Legend for free with the preorder, which was the only (Crystal Dynamics) Tomb Raider I didn’t already have, and on Steam.

I don’t buy games over 15€. Really, I don’t. That’s the limit. Actually, the limit is 10€, but very rarely I do go as high as 15€ (like when I get another game I want for free in the deal, making it actually 7.5). That’s 13 pounds, or 21 dollars. And I only buy games on Steam. ONLY ON STEAM, no retail AT ALL. For years now I’ve spent peanuts on my gaming habit, and my gaming library is FUCKING HUGE. Meaning, It’s over a 125 excellent (and many hardcore, AAA) games, and I will never finish them all for as long as I live.

Truly, we live in a golden age of PC gaming.

    3. and Civilization 5. (which despite all the hub-ub seems very similar to all the other Civs)
    4. oh, and if the new Monkey Island 2 was on sale on steam this month I got that too, but that might have been September. Usually my gaming money is spent on steam sales.

Despite all these purchases I have mostly been playing STALKER: Call of Pripyat after buying it in the last big steam sale and only just getting round to playing it. That is also awesomes.

As some sort of glutton karma my PSU blew this morning, in the middle of a week’s annual leave that was the perfect oppurtunity to catch up with some of my purchases, so no gaming for me until the replacement is delivered :(

Batman Arkham Asylum Goatee edition: Steam sale

(I had got the game originally whilst in Kyiv last year – it was a bootleg. This was a) because I bloody enjoyed the game and so monetary exchange with the actual games makers seemed appropriate and b) for the extra tidbits the GOTY edition comes with. Oh, and as saves don’t move across, an excuse to play it again)

Civ V: I couldn’t wait for it to be cheaper like I normally do.

Burnout Paradise. Super cheap from a local games shop. Probably the best impulse game buy for a long time. Excellent game.

    Minecraft. Obv.

Does DLC count? I got the TF2 polycount pack.
Initially, I was very wary about the whole TF2 items for cash thing. Then I wondered why I had got a ‘grizzled veteran’ badge from 2007, when I’ve only been playing it for about 2 years. And I remembered I got it from the Orange box. Which I bought solely for the Half Life episode. Given I’ve played almost 200 hours of TF2 over the past 2 years; for a game that was basically bundled free with another game in my eyes, I thought some monetary exchange was ok in this instance. I don’t intend to spend a penny more though. Microtransactions make me feel dirty. One off, rare buys of bulk packs seems ok.

    Minecraft.

    Dog Fighter (Steam).
    Because you told me to!

    Temple of Elemental Evil (GOG).

    Age of Wonders 2 (GOG).
The AoW series is one that has completely passed me by and I have no idea why. If it wasn’t for GOG, I still wouldn’t know about these games.

Guild Wars: Eye of the North (Steam).
Hey, it was on sale and it was the only GW expansion I was missing.

Guild Wars: Shining Blade Uniform (DLC).

re: Demon’s Soul: Are they kidding?! According to a press-release, they are “proud to keep the servers up till March 2011″? I mean, I know that the console world is another universe altogether, but is it really that exceptional to keep a game running even one year after it has had its (pretty succesful) launch (at least in the Western world)? I want it on PC. I so want it on PC.

Damn, still planning to buy a PS3, and mostly for this game, so I have to hurry up, it seems… thanks for mentioning it here, though.

PS Can you play the Asian version without much problem in these parts of the world? (That would be Europe…)

      report

I’m from Brazil actually, but I think the chinese copy with english text works for anyone. I use an european account to play it ( because my country has almost no PSN support ‘-.- ) and haven’t had any problems so far, and at least half a dozen friends are playing with me on the asian servers, normally.

And the servers closing really suck, I can’t even get some money back by selling my american copy ’cause no one wants to get it with limited multiplayer time =(

I won copies of Still Life and Gabriel Knight through GOG.

Borderlands (Mostly nice. Lovely headshots. Really need to get a sibling/friend to get it too. Shame I didn’t know about the “GOTY”-edition).
Batman: Arkham Asylum (Splendid biff-collect’em-up platforming).

Sid Meier’s Pirates (the remake) for coffee-break streaks. Online-wise TF2, Trackmania Nations, Red Orchestra, and the Forgotten Hope 2 mod for BF2 are getting plenty of play.

I’m also looking longingly at Sam and Max Seasons 2&3, the Left4Deads, Assassin’s Creed 2 and GTAIV: Episodes, and the impending final (really, they mean it!) EU3-improvo-expansion… but they’ll have to wait until I clear out some playthroughs on these aforementioned UE3-engine games.

October is usually a down month for game purchases for me because I have a birthday in November and I try to let other people buy games for me, but I did buy

    Minecraft
Some Xbox Live points for spending on XBLI games, of which I’ve so far only purchased Breath of Death VII, which I frankly didn’t like very much.

And yeah, it’s a lousy exception to my self-imposed indie rule, but the WoW sub is still going. It’s pretty much the only game my wife and I play together reliably (which is not to shift blame to the wife–we both enjoy it, otherwise we wouldn’t play together so much–but only to say, quitting WoW is one of those mutual decisions we need to make as partners, not because one of us decided to go all hipster in her game purchases.)

What I didn’t get was Fallout: New Vegas even though I set money aside from it. It sounds like a bug disaster.

Re: FONV, YMMV, but aside from the clunky old engine and standard bugs one saw in FO3 (stuck mobs, etc.) I’ve found it perfectly playable and free of major gamebreaking bugs on my PC. I even left it up and running after staying up way too late playing it, rushed off to work, returned to it and kept on going without any adverse effects at all. One crash so far in 36 hours and I think that was related to an unfortunate tilde keystroke during a frantic buttonmash.

    (all on Steam)

Men of War Gold Edition $8.74
    Monkey Island Complete Pack $4.99
Steam Wallet $25 (for TF2 items, not worth it at all in retrospect) $25
    The Polynomial $9.99
    Fallout New Vegas $49.99
    The Ball $17.99
    2K Baseball Bundle $2.99

So the total is about $120 USD. Only regret is spending any money on TF2 because it’s a complete numbers game with the drops, crafting and boxes. The people who go through 5 pages of items a day will get the good stuff, the people like me who only have 3 pages of items after playing the game on and off since release will get crap. The Polynomial I probably wouldn’t have considered if it weren’t for the RPS review, and that was quite enjoyable! Same as The Ball.

I bought 2 games this month, Planescape: Torment (£6.99) and Wizardry 8 (£2.99), both immaculate original boxed copies from my local Oxfam.

I already had an original of Planescape, as part of a box-set with Baldur’s Gate and Fallout 2, but it’s in storage in London and I wasn’t able to get it running on Windows 7 last I tried. Anyway, got it working this time. Wizardry 8 was easier to get up and running, although I had to download a no-CD crack, as the game simply wouldn’t recognise the CD in the drive. Both are a wee bit flaky and occasionally crash, but they work.

Wizardry 8, incidentally, starts magnificently. The lengthy opening section in the Monastery is about as good as computer games get. It can drag a bit once you’re out in the open and have to fight pretty much continuously, but the combat is fantastic and even though I’ve put a lot of hours in, I get the impression I’m a long, long way from completing it.

After I took the plunge on Batman:AA GOTY, I also picked up an Xbox 360 wired controller for the PC thanks to a $20 off Amazon code from a previous pre-order.

Depending what the rest of the THQ Steam sales this week look like, I might pick up some subset of Dawn of War and/or Metro 2033 if they’re cheap enough.

I just broke down and bought a console after years of heartache with connectivity and coop with my constant online coop partner, so I’m stocking the library. Crappier graphics aside, there is sadly something clean and efficient about them, and the ease of connectivity and generally more reliable quality from a closed, networked system is just short of a revelation.

That said, I still vastly and counterintuitively prefer the depth and craft (in the art, not the tech) one can find in PC titles. I’m an RPG and RTS guy primarily and I just don’t see consoles ever being able to do those genres well. Also those controllers make my thumb hurt.

Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor for iPhone (it was on sale for 59p a few weeks ago — YOINK)

Magic the Gathering: DotP + expansions (but not the unlocks) when it was on sale on Steam at the start of the month.

DJ Hero 2 for 360 (I ordered what purported to be the game + 2 turntables pack for £35 — clearly a misprice but I was optimistic. Alas, it was not to be and they sent me just the game, which I’ll be returning)

12 months Xbox Live Gold subscription + CODBLOPS t-shirt (another misprice — £2.99 — but sadly HMV cancelled)

Civ V (YET ANOTHER misprice and another cancellation, but fair play to Coolshop for giving me £3 to spend with them by way of compensation)

Rock Band 3 for 360 (ordered from hmv.com in order to get the pre-order DLC, and I’ll be downloading the free-for-a-week Doors DLC too) — I’ll wait a while before buying the keyboard controller though.

I’ll almost certainly be buying some Xbox Live points before the end of the month to get Super Meat Boy while it’s cheap and in order to catch up with some of the RB DLC I’ve missed over the last few months. Microsoft’s “spend 2400 points in October and get 800 points for free” offer is an added bonus.

Also, I bought two games for my Android phone, if that counts! Fruit Ninja and Reckless Driving.

  483. Tyraa Rane says:

Well, I’m unemployed at the moment, so I’ve cut down on my spending quite a bit. Nothing bought on Steam this month; sales haven’t appealed, and the holiday sale’s starting to cast its long shadow.

GoG, though…couldn’t resist a couple of sales and their new D&D additions. This month I’ve picked up Icewind Dale Complete, Still Life, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, Blood, and Blood II: The Chosen. Those were all on sale except Icewind Dale. Even when I was employed, I always wait for sales. ‘Cos I’m cheap, and my backlog’s massive as it is.

I buy retail/non-digital pretty rarely these days. Steam’s sales FTW, and quite literally the only electronics retailers in town are GameStop and Best Buy–GameStop doesn’t cater to PC gamers very much, at least not around here, and every time I go into Best Buy I see titles I can get for $10 – $20 cheaper on Steam. I buy games from Amazon occasionally, usually when I’m ordering something else and they’re a decent enough price–haven’t bought from them in a few months, though.

Sam & Max 203: Night of the Raving Dead (free, does that count?), Dogfighter 4-pack, Total Annihilation. That’s it for October. Which is kind of odd, as I usually get more than that. Either the sales weren’t as good, or my trying not to spend money is actually working.

    Deathspank (Steam)
    Puppy Games Ultrabundle (Puppy Games)

I haven’t made much in the way of purchases. Not had much time to play and also been waiting for the aussie dollar to hit parity with the US to use as an excuse.

    I bought:
    Minecraft
    TF2:
    - Gunboats
    - Dueling Mini-Game
    - The Tank Buster
    - Rocket Jumper
    - Buff Banner

Have yet to try the Dueling Mini-Game though.

New releases I snagged via Steam:

AI War: Children of the Neinzul
Age of Wonders Trilogy Pack (awwww yeeeah, etc)
    Axel & Pixel
    Big Brain Wolf
Deathspank (with Shank, as a bundle)
    Diamond Dan
    Doc Clock
    Fallout 3
    Lego Universe
    Nimbus
    Shank
    The Ball

Then I bought the Dogfighter four-pack and gifted three copies. After playing I tried to buy the four pack again and it refused because I already own the game. Apparently it’s a Steam issue…

And no, I generally don’t splurge like that unless there’s a mega-sale going on. It just happens that my birthday was on the second of this month and I had some “yay I’m older” cash to spend.
