Blizzard Suing Creators Of StarCraft II Hacks

By John Walker on October 18th, 2010.

Zerg something something rush something.

As we reported last week, Blizzard have taken the extremely peculiar decision to ban players from playing StarCraft II for using cheats in the single-player game. This meant that, despite cheating no one but themselves, they were locked out of playing the single-player game. Which is clearly bonkers. But it’s not enough for the developer. Blizzard’s lawyers are now setting out to sue those who create cheats.

Eurogamer Retro: Fate Of Atlantis

By John Walker on October 18th, 2010.

They were less politically correct times.

Playing old games makes you more handsome, so in my desperate struggle to ascend from “bridge troll” I’ve created another retrospective for Eurogamer, this time about Indiana Jones & The Fate Of Atlantis. Made at the same time as The Secret Of Monkey Island and The Dig, I argue that it’s the best of the three. Despite not having any fondness for Indy. I say:

“It’s a good job the Nazis didn’t have access to all the mystical, powerful idols and machinery that gaming would have us believe. Although it’s equally odd that our fiction wants to take one of the most horrific and murderous forces ever to have existed, and suggest that had they only got their hands on the Holy Grail or secrets of ancient worlds then they could have caused some real trouble. But such is the way of both gaming and the Indiana Jones franchise, and so once more the good doctor is trekking about the planet, trying to beat the Nazis to finding the lost city of Atlantis.”

A Computer Game: Siamese Enemies

By Quintin Smith on October 18th, 2010.

She did not ask for two babies!!

Here is what is happening, there is a computer game Siamese Enemies made by Krimelo. It is a wonderful two player computer game. You and your friend, you are a siamese twin, and you race across a randomised level to the hospital. There, that is when all of the things start to go crazy.

Catagasm: Official Cataclysm Intro Movie

By Quintin Smith on October 18th, 2010.

Deathwing *hates* crows.

Yes, the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm intro cinematic has been released. It weighs in at 2 minutes, focuses on Deathwing and can be found after the jump. The world heaves with his torment! Its wretched kingdoms quake beneath his rage! All will burn beneath the shadow of his wings! It looks like Deathwing is a very grumpy dragon. Who knew?

Tell you what you shouldn’t do directly after watching this incredibly expensive bit of drama. You shouldn’t watch a YouTube video of an actual WoW boss fight. I think that might be a bad idea.

DoW2: Retribution Gets Tyranids

By Jim Rossignol on October 18th, 2010.

Yep, the hive-dwelling bio-weaponised ones join Orks and Eldar as the next playable faction – playable in the single-player campaign, that is – for the big Dawn Of War 2 expansion, Retribution, as revealed in PC Gamer’s scoop. There’s also a trailer of the handsome aliens in action, which I’ve posted below. Go team ‘Nids!

Time, Gentlemen: FFXIV Extends Trial Period

By Jim Rossignol on October 18th, 2010.

That “free” 30 days you get if you buy Square Enix’s MMO Final Fantasy XIV is now 60 days, thanks to the troubles the game has experienced on launch. As well as the inevitable server issues, there’s a bunch of broken stuff in the game, including problems with a number of quests. Square Enix have announced that “All users who registered a FINAL FANTASY XIV service account and purchased a character by October 25, 2010 will be eligible” for the additional game time. Presumably the publishers expect the worst of the problems to have been resolved by the end of that period, but I’m not getting a good feeling for the fate of this one.

Lost Marbles: Rock Of Ages

By Jim Rossignol on October 18th, 2010.

The next game from Zeno Clash creators Ace Team, which will be coming out on the PC as well as the TV fun extenders in early 2011, is Rock Of Ages. It looks delightfully batshit awesome, as you can see from the most recent trailer, which I’ve totally gone and embedded right below these words. Said trailer shows a selection of things that the rock will smash, as well as some of the special powers you can expect to use. It also reveals more of the fantastic art style from the game’s Renaissance period. (Intriguingly, each level has its own historical art style.) Go take a look. It’s not a bad way to start a week.

Goose Greenlight: Jet Thunder Gets Publisher

By Tim Stone on October 17th, 2010.

Six of the war-torn wonders I tipped at the start of the year are now available, and a recent announcement on the Aerosoft forum suggests that total will soon be seven. Or 6.333333333 if you want to be pedantic. The German publisher that back in July 09 declared an interest in developing a successor to Microsoft Flight Simulator, has just signed-up Falklands/Malvinas War flight sim Jet Thunder, and plans to release a good third of it before the year is out. Splendid news!/Geniales noticias! Read the rest of this entry »

The Sunday Papers

By Jim Rossignol on October 17th, 2010.

Sundays are for thumbing through a copy of 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die, a colossal coffee-table tome whose contributors include me, Gillen, Simon Parkin, and a number of other RPS writer allies. It was quite the project, and I’m pleased to see the resulting book could be used to club intruders to death, should the situation demand. Also, Sundays are for internet thought-links. Here are some of they.

  • In a week dominated by corporate whistle-blowers and their attendant satirists, it was The Horrible Truth About Cliff Bleszinski that actually made me laugh. The anonymous blog post claims that Mr B is addicted to Cherry Flavor Hostess Fruit Pies, meaning that “…during UT development he was LITERALLY bouncing off the walls, which is the inspiration behind that move by the way.” And the Gears Of War design leprechaun was gracious enough to admit that it was basically true.

Cardboard Children: Warhammer Invasion

By Robert Florence on October 16th, 2010.

Hello youse.

Last week, a few of you suggested that I make a LIST. Yes, RPS is a site about games, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we need to do what all the other games sites do and make LISTS every few weeks. TEN BEST BREASTS IN GAMING! TEN GORIEST DEATHS IN GAMING! TEN MOST CREATIVELY BANKRUPT GAMES WEBSITES IN GAMING!

But, damn it, okay. I’ll make a list. A list of the five games that are perfect for introducing new people to the hobby. But I’ll be making NO MORE LISTS until I run out of ideas for the column in two weeks time.

Before we do all that, though, I want to talk about my week in gaming.

The RPS Bargain Bucket: Tides of Time

By Lewie Procter on October 16th, 2010.

It’s the weekend, and that means one thing: Publishers reduce the prices of their computer entertainment software for promotional purposes. As always, the bargain bucket is here to show you the best of the bunch. Remember to keep checking SavyGamer for all the cheap games, all the time. I’m even helping you save on your Christmas shopping too. Here’s this week’s offerings: Read the rest of this entry »
