World Of Goo: The Hat

By Alec Meer on November 12th, 2010 at 5:53 pm.

Indie games and hats: two things which are very much RPS’ bread and butter, yet never the twain shall meet, which seems an oversight. David Lien wants to change all that. He plans to create an indie merchandising business, and as such has already snagged the blessings of the goodly gentlemen of 2D Boy to make these semi-official World of Goo hats. Hats!

But what else from indieland could and should be merchandised? A full, quivering tentacle suit for Octodad (to of course be worn beneath your own tuxedo)? A selection of cutlery shaped like Minecraft tools? Rock of Ages bowling balls?

The hats are preorderifiying here, by the way – $15 to $20 with free postage, and you can optionally lob on $5 more to get World of Goo itself.

Man, World of Goo seems a long time ago. Please hurry up and release a new game, 2D Boy.

Do they have gameplay altering effects though, or are they just cosmetic?

    • evilbobthebob says:

+50% chance for “Oh, so you read RPS/play World of Goo/have an excellent taste in hats too?” comment.

    • Navagon says:

On cold days they give your head +5 warmness.

    • PleasingFungus says:

Obviously, they only have effects when completing the World of Goo Item Set. (The rest of the set is left to your fertile imagination.)

    Hats IRL?

    Mind=blown!

  3. phuzz says:

    SQUEEE!

  4. Nick says:

What life needs is an item shop?

  5. schizopol says:

I always wanted to look like the guy with the boobs on his head from Little Nicky

  6. jsutcliffe says:

Aw, dammit. When I saw this headline in the RSS feed I thought it was some kind of add-on or new level.

  7. Wooly says:

    And in the game?

  8. noobnob says:

Will I be able to build wobbly bridges with the poor, poor humans who happen to wear one of those?

Also, I’m saddened that there will be no sequel to WoG. In the end, it raises the expectations on 2dboy’s next game.

    • Heliocentric says:

      Who says no sequel?

Surely it might happen one day.

Can you see yourself making a sequel (or, better yet, bite-sized DLC add-on packs)? Or are you looking to move on to a different project next? What’s the next step for 2D Boy?

Ron: No! No sequel! The only sequel to meet the expectations created by the original is The Empire Strikes Back, and even then, it was just because George Lucas didn’t direct it. Also, we’ve eaten enough goo to last a life time and we’re ready to do something else.

    • MOM4Evr says:

No, no official World of Goo 2 is going to be released. But there are currently 3 (at least) fan-made sequel projects in the works. You can check on their development status on goofans.com.

As for the hats… I ordered one already! Can’t wait! :D

  9. Navagon says:

Does it have… It is an item shop? Whoa!

  10. Frankie The Patrician[PF] says:

I might be actually nerdy enough to preorder it…and consequently wear it….along with my Medal of Honor t-shirt

  11. Rei Onryou says:

I need a new hat! People keep saying my current one makes me look like a criminal. Now I’ll look like a gooball!

  12. Heliocentric says:

Hah! Just sorted out a few Christmas gifts!

  13. skalpadda says:

Well that’s Christmas presents for all the family sorted then. Thanks Alec!

  14. LionsPhil says:

@Heliocentric: Why would it need a sequel?

WoG strikes me as one of those games that was nicely self-contained and can sit confidently as a Nice Little Game Which Was Fun. It doesn’t need to be a “franchise”; 2D Boy can go come up with some nice other ideas now.

  15. panther says:

Are there any reports 2D boy are actually working on something?

    • MOM4Evr says:

Yep. Kyle Gabler just teamed up with Kyle Gray and Allan Blomquist to form “Tomorrow Corporation” (tomorrowcorporation.com), and they’re hard at work on their new game called “Little Inferno”. Not sure if Kyle and Ron are going to do anything else together, but I’m glad to see that Kyle at least is working on another game.

  16. Cyrenic says:

Minecraft merchandise would sell like crazy.

  17. bill says:

Do they have baby sizes? This would look sooooooo cute!
Video game merchandise for adults… no such a fan. But for kids….

  18. Sulkdodds says:

    No staring eyes tag?
