Serve The Servants: Server Suggestions?

By Jim Rossignol on November 26th, 2010 at 8:16 am.

I have a question for you. Currently we run servers for Team Fortress 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Minecraft. If we were to start another community server, what should it be? Your suggestions please, readers.

    Sven Co-op

  2. Fondue says:

    ArmA 2, obvs.

  3. Thecreeperskg says:

How about CoD:MW? As far as I know the Activision runned servers are closed and since MW is the only CoD that actually matters in term of MP, create a server for that. My next suggestion would be CS v.1.4-1.6. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE creata a CS server!!!!!!!!!

    • KillahMate says:

Hm, if we’re going for manshoots, either or both CS:S and Modern Warfare 1 would be great. I’d appreciate a server not populated by screeching homophobes.

Definitely MW1, though. All of these new ones do not compare.

    • tycho says:

      Yes! CS Source.

It’d be so nice to play without being called a “Lolz F*g” every ten seconds.

    • Ringwraith says:

I forget how abnormal it is to have only ever played CSS on servers with nice people.

    • Thecreeperskg says:

@ Kaphei there are no nice people, only targets.
@ Tycho CS NOT source, pre-source version -no SWAT shield crap, just Dust, Aztec, Italy, Killhouse etc… you know…fun! PLEAAAAASE RPS for the love of whatever’s holly save us – me that is – from the torture of nab-camp-knife spaming brainless idiots!!!!

  4. Malawi Frontier Guard says:

    Half-Life Deathmatch.

    • Fringe says:

Excellent, excellent idea. Although maybe not for RPS.

    • Chaz says:

Actually an original Half Life DM, TDM server would be pretty good. Laser trip mines and snarks, it’s the kind of cool weaponry you just don’t get in FPS games any more.

    • coldwave says:

Man, I want Half Life Deathmatch Source server.

    • DrGonzo says:

Half Life Deathmatch Source has always been gimped though. Doesn’t seem to be possible to get latency below about 150ms.

  5. thebrassthief says:

    ArmA II: OA

  6. RiptoR says:

I know a lot of you will disagree, but a Black Ops server would be nice. Preferably set to Hardcore.

  7. GamerOfFreedom says:

A CoDBLops server would be nice, or a BFBC2 Vietnam server when that is out

  8. Greg Wild says:

There’s already an unofficial ArmA Server. Check the forums, then join the RPS Steam Group :)
It’s a little way off at the moment, though I dare say a Natural Selection 2 server would be most welcome once the game is in a more stable shape.

    • Benny says:

NS2 would be great, poss once it’s more stable/released. Been following the beta and very tempted to drop a pre-order and give it a go. I think an rps server would push me over that edge.

[Edit]: BooleanBob mentioned Deus Ex. Now that would be rather awesome to try in multiplayer. Or possibly make it a roaming server whereby once a week you host a random interesting multiplayer game/mod and leave it running all week.

    • Stephen Roberts says:

I would love to have an NS2 server to call home but I’ve ‘played’ the ‘beta’ if you can really call it that and it’s a long way away from a finished product. So much so that I feel short changed for buying it. Natural Selection one still works and there are plenty of excellent maps that never got a look in (ns_machina anyone?). I’d be all over that like a rash.

    • CJohnson03 says:

      NS2 YES PLEASE

    • Greg Wild says:

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. There’s definite potential for NS2. I’ve had a few fun games in it now, and I’m confident that the boys at UWE will get it sorted.

  9. Laughingman says:

    The Ship

  10. Lord Uber Dowzen says:

I’m gonna throw out a random one: Plain Sight. It’s a really good indie multiplayer game but hardly anyone is playing it.

    • jeremypeel says:

      I’ll second that.

    • Meat Circus says:

The Ship and Plain Sight are both excellent suggestions.

    • adonf says:

“Hardly anyone” is an exaggeration. The truth is that absolutely no one is playing it!

It’s in one of the $5 Steam indie packs sales for this week or next week, so hopefully this will change.

    • Miguelese says:

Ooooh thats interesting, Plain Sight is the game Steam is “recommending” that I buy, based on the position of Capricorn in relation to another thingy and the way my tea sits in teh bottom of my mug or something. So its a good romp is it?

    • KingCathcart says:

Yeah, a Plain Sight server would be great. But you would have to organise events because its a ghost town out there at the moment.

    • DrazharLn says:

Another vote for Plain Sight, that’s a fun little game.

    • msarge says:

This game looks pretty cool, I’m finally considering buying it.

    • Wowza says:

      I agree. It’s a pretty decent game.

  11. Luomu says:

    MWLL :)

    Whenever the next release is…

  12. Alex Bakke says:

I don’t think we should have another shooty-manshoots server. Plain Sight would be fun.

  13. kaljtgg says:

    Zombie Riot mod for CS:S!

  14. Spooty says:

Not sure if it’s at all possible but I know custom games can be hosted: League of Legends?

  15. Tokjos says:

    Tribes 2!
    It’s even free, nowadays: http://www.tribesnext.com/downloads

    • BooleanBob says:

Tribes 2 is completely great (Katabatic! KATABATIC!) but I’m going to stick with my original suggestion and say Deus Ex multiplayer. GUYS IT’S SERIOUSLY SO GOOD.

    • MrSafin says:

Tokjos, did you read my mind?

      Tribes 2. Hell yeah!

    • Chaz says:

A Tribes 2 server would be fantastic, although personaly I always prefered Tribes 1.

    • LionsPhil says:

Seconding Deus Ex Multiplayer if only because Ion Storm wasted so much time on it for a game nobody wanted to play while Q3 and UT were around. :(

  16. grossvogel says:

    CS:S. No, seriously.

    • Mccy_McFlinn says:

Do we still call it CS:S? I thought people just called it de_dust these days.

    • grossvogel says:

Yes, that’s why RPS needs its own server. This is exactly the sort of community that can appreciate the, ah, bucolic tranquility of cs_militia.

    • KillahMate says:

Hell yes. The whole point would be to see/play something different. Also Source ’cause I sort of like the recently added features. Please don’t strangle me.

    • man-eater chimp says:

      cs_office 24/7

But yes, definitely a CS:S server please!

  17. Army of None says:

    Shattered Horizon, woo!

  18. Melf_Himself says:

I know there are no servers required, but consider getting a regular bunch to get together and play Demigod. Great game that unofrtunately demolished its user base on release… still fantastic when you can get the people together to play it.

    Also, Left 4 Dead(s)?

  19. Mechorpheus says:

    CODBLOPS!

    Only kidding….. or am I?

  20. mojo says:

    q3cpma

  21. Kevin says:

Would like to see a greater presence of the RPS team on their own servers. As it stands, the only time the TF2 server has a healthy number of players is when an event is going on. It’d be nice to see you guys there so we can also frag the writers we know and love.

  22. Nallen says:

    EVE.

We could have a whip round?

    • Temple to Tei says:

We have smart people reading RPS.
We could make it a non-pvp server and then I would really like it :)

  23. Asselheinz says:

Urban Terror. This is a Q3A Mod from 2003, which is now a free standalone game.

    • Òscar says:

Actually there are too many servers of this thing. A while ago i tried to play Quake 3 Arena (i bought it during a Steam sale) and almost 90% of the servers were running Urban terror.

    • jon_hill987 says:

Yeah, these days if you want to play Quake III your only choice for a proper game is Quake Live.

  24. Fionny says:

Im well up for a COD BLOPS one.

  25. Spacegirl says:

go into the future and set up a Brink server and then bring us all INTO the future and make that game not disappoint me……

    k?

    • Rond says:

Count me in, time travel is fun. Double fun combined with Brink.

    • Temple to Tei says:

We would need to go further into the future for when I have a pc that could play it, but by then everyone else would have stopped so we would then have to go back in time and then… well chaos.

  26. terry says:

    Skulltag :D

  27. RaytraceRat says:

    Team Bad Minefield 2!

  28. MKharris says:

Left 4 Dead seems a good choice – it’s potential for fun really does depend on having a decent group of people.

(i.e people who don’t curse you and all your descendants because you’re not standing in the optimal defensive position for each room)

  29. Tyrone Slothrop says:

Just put up a Black Ops server, in spite of alot of people’s posturing, more people who view RPS have it than most of the other suggestions here.

    • Surgeon says:

Any chance of the lottery numbers for tonight?

    • subedii says:

      I don’t have it. :)

Regardless, there are plenty enough servers for CoD games. I think something a bit more unusual would be preferable, if for nothing other than having a bit of variety.

  30. subedii says:

    -Alien Swarm?
It’s free and everyone’s got it. The downside is that it’s only four players though.

    -Plain Sight?
I can get behind this suggestion, although personally I’m doubtful I’d play it on a regular basis.

    - Shattered Horizon?
I could see that, but there are already enough empty servers hanging around realistically.

Can’t think of too much else. I agree something non FPS based would be probably be preferable. Personally I play mainly RTS’s, but those don’t need servers, or cater to too many players either.

If we want something other than FPS related happening, it might just be simpler to have it organised as a regular event notification on the Steam group.

    • KillahMate says:

      ALIEN SWARM: FUCK YES.

Can’t believe I didn’t think of that. It’s perfect; free, a great game, and best played in pleasant company. Also you only need a few people to play, no need for 16-man groups, so playable more often.

  31. Schaulustiger says:

Considering the popularity of the Minecraft servers, I’d say:

    Garry’s Mod.

I’m sure that RPS folks would create some amazing contraptions. And I’d have a reason to fire it up again.

  32. Skyturnedred says:

    Action Half-Life.

  33. Crainey says:

Garrys Mod server? Just a suggestion although I havnt played that game in quite some time, just the odd time with friends. Though the question of what kind of Garrys Mod server still stands?

Just thought id throw it out there since it hasnt been mentioned yet and to me it seems like a no brainer.

  34. Surgeon says:

I haven’t played it for ages, but how about Dystopia?

    http://www.dystopia-game.com/

    • DrazharLn says:

Dystopia is fun, and it can be hard to get to good servers from the UK. +1 from me.

    • KindredPhantom says:

I agree but then again i’m biased :D.

How about some mod loving, you have indie loving with minecraft,

  35. Down Rodeo says:

We’ve started playing World in Conflict in our flat again. It’s not an FPS, but can support many players, and is a great laugh. I’d probably play Plain Sight more if I had little event reminders every so often :p

  36. wat says:

There’s already a community-run ArmA2 server which gets decent traffic, otherwise that would be my vote.

Instead, I’d suggest Killing Floor, BF:BC2 Vietnam or Shattered Horizon (if people actually play that game)

  37. Rei Onryou says:

    Section 8?
    Natural Selection?
Call of Duty 2? (stick it to those modern people!)
    Killing Floor?
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory? (free – old school – awesome)
Serious Sam HD (1 or 2)?

    • KillahMate says:

Vote of support for Serious Sam HD and Enemy Territory. Great games, not played enough.

    • Crusoe says:

I have to second COD 2. An excellent, well balanced shooter.

    • rhizo says:

I’d give my left kidney and maybe a transplant-worthy piece of my liver too for a proper self-controlling Enemy Territory (etpro obv) server/community. With a good group of people that game is truly something special. Could use a couple of rounds of sw_gr or maybe radar right about now.

  38. salejemaster says:

    KILLING FLOOR!!!!11one!

  39. mlaskus says:

    Space Station 13! :)

    • BattleToadz says:

      YES! Space Station 13 please!

    • MrEvilGuy says:

Yes, I think this would be the best choice. Perhaps someone can actually teach me how to accomplish a job or two.

  40. Tyra Banks says:

    Mount & Blade: Warband

  41. Feet says:

Plain Sight is great fun, though it’s really lightweight so I don’t expect even with RPS people’s on an RPS server that it would remain consistantly populated for more than a week before becoming deserted and unused again… I really enjoyed Shattered Horizon on the free weekend, but I haven’t commited to actually buying it up to this point, I reckon that would offer more longevity than Plain Sight, but then I’d have to buy it to play… I own Section 8 and thought it was really fun, but I fear very few others owns it….

You could pick a really good HL\HL2 MP mod. Everyone owns them, and there’s huge variety.

Or you could do CoD: BlOps I spose. Bad Company 2? Erm. AirBuccanneers again? Erm. Dunno. It would be nice to do something that isn’t a straight man-shoot.

  42. Anarki says:

I thought this would make me unpopular, but a few other people have mentioned CODBLOPS. This would make me happy. It’s great having dedicated servers but I’ve yet to find a nice “regular” server that I can call home. Also I echo calls for CS 1.6!

  43. EBass says:

Hmmmmm I’m gonna say either Alien Swarm or Serious Sam HD, both great fun and both needing only a small group.

  44. Sinomatic says:

Plain sight would be great fun, though as others have said, it maybe doesn’t have long-term appeal.

Wolf ET would be brilliant. Free and old so its more likely that everyone would be able to play should they wish.

Maybe you should just rotate a server to play a different thing every month….

  45. choconutjoe says:

    Air Buccaneers!!!

  46. VelvetFistIronGlove says:

Lots of votes for Plain Sight it seems.

I’ll chuck this in: if RPS do set up a Plain Sight server, then I’ll give away three copies of it to people wanting to play it.

  47. KillahMate says:

So, after reading everyone’s suggestions, to sum up my preferences:
    1. Alien Swarm: free, awesome, needs only 4 players to work
    2. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory: sadly overlooked, amazing multiplayer
    3. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory: free, awesome, classic
    4. Serious Sam HD: great fun, could use a good server
    5. Counter-strike: Source: needs a server not populated by children
    6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: ditto
    7. Crysis Wars: really very good, but people don’t play it nearly enough
    5. Left 4 Dead 1: because why not
    8. Unreal Tournament 3: so I don’t feel like I’ve wasted the money on this thing.

    • DrGonzo says:

Cause Left4Dead 2 is better? But I agree with the rest. But not Unreal Tournament 3, much rather have us playing the first one.

    • KillahMate says:

Yeah, but L4D2 servers aren’t exactly difficult to find. Still, neither are TF2, B:BC2 and Minecraft servers, so your point stands. I just wanted to take this opportunity to campaign for some less common games.

    • D says:

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory sounds like a great idea to me. I never got to play it back in those days.

  48. Grey says:

I would vote for Natural selection 2 :D

    oh specialists is also cool^^

  49. DrGonzo says:

Kane and Lynch 2. Just bought it for a pittance and the multiplayer sounds quite interesting if played with a decent bunch.

    • Kaphei says:

I agree with this. I also bought the game and heard that the Multiplayer is really fun with people you know.
