Serve The Servants: Server Suggestions?

I have a question for you. Currently we run servers for Team Fortress 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Minecraft. If we were to start another community server, what should it be? Your suggestions please, readers.

    How about CoD:MW? As far as I know the Activision runned servers are closed and since MW is the only CoD that actually matters in term of MP, create a server for that. My next suggestion would be CS v.1.4-1.6. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE creata a CS server!!!!!!!!!

      Hm, if we’re going for manshoots, either or both CS:S and Modern Warfare 1 would be great. I’d appreciate a server not populated by screeching homophobes.

      Definitely MW1, though. All of these new ones do not compare.

    There’s already an unofficial ArmA Server. Check the forums, then join the RPS Steam Group :)
    It’s a little way off at the moment, though I dare say a Natural Selection 2 server would be most welcome once the game is in a more stable shape.

      NS2 would be great, poss once it’s more stable/released. Been following the beta and very tempted to drop a pre-order and give it a go. I think an rps server would push me over that edge.

      [Edit]: BooleanBob mentioned Deus Ex. Now that would be rather awesome to try in multiplayer. Or possibly make it a roaming server whereby once a week you host a random interesting multiplayer game/mod and leave it running all week.

      I would love to have an NS2 server to call home but I’ve ‘played’ the ‘beta’ if you can really call it that and it’s a long way away from a finished product. So much so that I feel short changed for buying it. Natural Selection one still works and there are plenty of excellent maps that never got a look in (ns_machina anyone?). I’d be all over that like a rash.

      I wouldn’t worry about it too much. There’s definite potential for NS2. I’ve had a few fun games in it now, and I’m confident that the boys at UWE will get it sorted.

    Would like to see a greater presence of the RPS team on their own servers. As it stands, the only time the TF2 server has a healthy number of players is when an event is going on. It’d be nice to see you guys there so we can also frag the writers we know and love.

    Left 4 Dead seems a good choice – it’s potential for fun really does depend on having a decent group of people.

    (i.e people who don’t curse you and all your descendants because you’re not standing in the optimal defensive position for each room)

    It’s free and everyone’s got it. The downside is that it’s only four players though.

    I can get behind this suggestion, although personally I’m doubtful I’d play it on a regular basis.

    - Shattered Horizon?
    I could see that, but there are already enough empty servers hanging around realistically.

    Can’t think of too much else. I agree something non FPS based would be probably be preferable. Personally I play mainly RTS’s, but those don’t need servers, or cater to too many players either.

    If we want something other than FPS related happening, it might just be simpler to have it organised as a regular event notification on the Steam group.

      Can’t believe I didn’t think of that. It’s perfect; free, a great game, and best played in pleasant company. Also you only need a few people to play, no need for 16-man groups, so playable more often.

    Garry’s Mod.

    I’m sure that RPS folks would create some amazing contraptions. And I’d have a reason to fire it up again.

    Garrys Mod server? Just a suggestion although I havnt played that game in quite some time, just the odd time with friends. Though the question of what kind of Garrys Mod server still stands?

    Just thought id throw it out there since it hasnt been mentioned yet and to me it seems like a no brainer.

    We’ve started playing World in Conflict in our flat again. It’s not an FPS, but can support many players, and is a great laugh. I’d probably play Plain Sight more if I had little event reminders every so often :p

    There’s already a community-run ArmA2 server which gets decent traffic, otherwise that would be my vote.

    Instead, I’d suggest Killing Floor, BF:BC2 Vietnam or Shattered Horizon (if people actually play that game)

      I’d give my left kidney and maybe a transplant-worthy piece of my liver too for a proper self-controlling Enemy Territory (etpro obv) server/community. With a good group of people that game is truly something special. Could use a couple of rounds of sw_gr or maybe radar right about now.

    Plain Sight is great fun, though it’s really lightweight so I don’t expect even with RPS people’s on an RPS server that it would remain consistantly populated for more than a week before becoming deserted and unused again… I really enjoyed Shattered Horizon on the free weekend, but I haven’t commited to actually buying it up to this point, I reckon that would offer more longevity than Plain Sight, but then I’d have to buy it to play… I own Section 8 and thought it was really fun, but I fear very few others owns it….

    You could pick a really good HL\HL2 MP mod. Everyone owns them, and there’s huge variety.

    Or you could do CoD: BlOps I spose. Bad Company 2? Erm. AirBuccanneers again? Erm. Dunno. It would be nice to do something that isn’t a straight man-shoot.

    Plain sight would be great fun, though as others have said, it maybe doesn’t have long-term appeal.

    Wolf ET would be brilliant. Free and old so its more likely that everyone would be able to play should they wish.

    Maybe you should just rotate a server to play a different thing every month….

    So, after reading everyone’s suggestions, to sum up my preferences:
    1. Alien Swarm: free, awesome, needs only 4 players to work
    2. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory: sadly overlooked, amazing multiplayer
    3. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory: free, awesome, classic
    4. Serious Sam HD: great fun, could use a good server
    5. Counter-strike: Source: needs a server not populated by children
    6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: ditto
    7. Crysis Wars: really very good, but people don’t play it nearly enough
    5. Left 4 Dead 1: because why not
    8. Unreal Tournament 3: so I don’t feel like I’ve wasted the money on this thing.

    Alien Swarm and L4D 1/2 have a postive and negative factor to take into consideration: only 4 players. Does Borderlands do servers? I’ve only had a horrific time attempting to play it online and, given it’s designed around that party-play, it is a terrible oversight. But it’s too.. progressive a game I think (also why did they make it so you have to ‘use’ everything to pick it up? I mean… Doom had the FPS pick up system perfected, why change it? And the compare UI of terribleness!)

    I’m gunna go for Natural Selection that turns into NS2 when it’s complete. And it only has proper ns_ maps in the rotation, and it doesn’t feature popular maps as much (buhbye eclipse and veil).

    1. Old NS versions: Babblers,warping fades,lerks spitting nails,aliens can use Phase gates

    2. Neo-Tfc

    3. Existence (the HL mod)

    4. Science & industry (well ,this one still has servers running)

    Unreal Tournament 2k4, Bombing Run mode. Easily the best game mode in any multiplayer FPS, and as far as I know about a hundred people in total have ever played it at all.

    Would it be possible to swap what’s running around? Run a popular game most of the time, then take that software down at scheduled times to give Plain Sight, The Ship, or whatever an outing?
