Another day, another MMORPG goes free to play. This morning it’s 2008 game of naval combat, swashbuckling and trading Pirates of the Burning Sea. Kieron actually had a chat to the developers about the decision a couple of months ago, but now it’s finally happened. As of today the standard $14.99/month subscription simply gets you access to exclusive “Captain’s Club” content. Alternatively, you can buy little items and account upgrades piecemeal over at Treasure Aisle. Yes. Watch the latest and greatest trailer after the jump.
And here’s an enormous team battle set to what I believe is Rammstein. Ah, YouTube.

The music for that last video does seem rather at odds with the action. Why do people insist on using pumping electro metal for these things when a waltz or something like Ravel’s Boléro would be far more suited to the sedate pace of the action. I see the same thing in just about every other Eve video too; lots of angry thumping music whilst we watch some one flick through a few menus.

Haven’t played this since the beta. It was good fun, for a short while, but got repetitive too fast at the time.

Drowning Pool should provide the backing track to absolutely everything imo

Definitely, especially since anything good invariably has bodies hitting floors anyway. It just makes sense.

If you’re going to have a hard-and-heavy soundtrack to something piratical, you’re an embarrassment to all things metal if you don’t use Alestorm.

Very silly band. Saw em’ live once, and they didn’t take themselves the slightest bit seriously. Great stuff.

That’s AWFUL. Incredibly happy now.
30/11/2010 at 14:32 Dominic White says:
They’re great. Dorky as hell, but they got pretty much the entire crowd singing along.

Rule 37: There will be heavy metal of it.

Is it actually any good – or should I just stick with Lord of the Rings?
30/11/2010 at 15:25 MXZ says:
It’s pretty horrible outside of the ship combat.
If you’re still playing Lord of the Rings though… ugh.

Not sure what you mean – i’ve gone back to LOTRO sinse it went FTP and it’s great …

For anyone interested, if you search for “charlestown port battle” on youtube, the first result is an excellent video of a port battle – it gives you a much better impression of what the game is like.

This concerns me greatly.
(1) Because I’m reading this at work.
(2) BECAUSE I WORK IN CHARLESTOWN.
Arrggh!!
(Or… ARRRRRRRRRR… as the case may be)

What sells it is the Shakespearian dialogue:
“Ah!”
“Hah!”
“Arh!”
“Hanh!”

Downloading is taking a while, guess they didn’t prepare for the thousands of people wanting to give it a go at once.

Yup, I’ve played it a few hours today and it’s kinda fun. You get to ride ships and battle it out at sea. The graphics isn’t bad either. Obviously, I’m on a FREE account. LOL

I still beg you to make a roundup of 2010s free to play MMO games that are actually worth considering.
I have completely lost any kind of overview.
