You Have To Use The Rope: Zen Bound 2

By Jim Rossignol on November 18th, 2010.

There’s something sinister about Zen Bound 2. I’m not really aware of how the original game came to spawn this sequel, but I’m imagining that was a bit sinister too. The reason for this is that Zen Bound is about binding things up with a rope. And the rope is very tight.

Some thoughts on this below.

Zombie Driver: Blood Race Released

By Quintin Smith on November 18th, 2010.

A free update for Zombie Driver, Zombie Driver: Blood Race has been released, stitching a new fleshed-out racing mode to the existing Story and Slaughter modes.

I just went and dipped my toe into Zombie Driver’s gory waters for the first time and found myself having a fair bit of disposable fun. If you’re looking for something that’ll entertain you with an investment of little-to-no brainpower, ZD’s your boy, especially so because developers Exor Studios have substantially enlarged this game since it was first released and are having a 50% off sale this week. The latest trailer lurks beneath.

Leap Years: …But That Was [Yesterday]

By Quintin Smith on November 18th, 2010.

I wonder if Mirror's Edge was a metaphor, too.

Lo-fi indie browser game …But That Was [Yesterday] is worth your attention. It’s a textbook example of how to do more with less, and by “how to do more” I mean “how to tug at your heartstrings like bell ropes”.

That this little browser game moved me is hardly surprising because I am like a leaky bucket of emotions, but that it also moved Mike “Dead Inside” Rose of the brilliant Indie Games Blog should speak volumes. Go and play it, Rock Paper Shotgunners, and give it a couple of minutes. It starts off slow.

RPS Game Club: Manshoots!

By Jim Rossignol on November 18th, 2010.

This week the RPS Game Club will be celebrating our love of men with guns in a Men & Guns Manshoot Weekend Special. We’ve got two servers that are intended solely for the purpose of shooting men. They are:

The Team Fortress 2 Server: 85.236.100.107:27315
The Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Server: 85.236.101.38:21467, actually you have to just search for this in the browser list, it’s called Rock, Paper, Shotgun of course. Search for Rock, to find it. It’s case sensitive, for some reason. Sigh.

Both provided by Multiplay! We will do war on those servers this coming Saturday and Sunday night (20th, 21st) from 7pm UK time. Choose your game, and JOIN US! (I’ll add some events on the Steam group as a reminder.)

Vindictus Looking Meaty In Launch Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on November 18th, 2010.

Free-to-play hack ‘n’ slash MMO Vindictus is looking snazzy with its Source-powered fighting scenarios, and it’s now out of beta and live in North America. The launch trailer (below) shows off some of the beasts you have to fight, as well as some of the melee moves that feature in the game. It looks pretty bold for an MMO, however unMMO that might actually be. Word from Nexon is that Vindictus is coming to Europe “soon”.

Any North Americans (or IP-spoofers) had a go?

A Nuclear Error: R.U.S.E. DLC Next Month

By Quintin Smith on November 18th, 2010.

John's been cooking again, I see.

This December, R.U.S.E. will be inviting us all to come and strum on nukuleles. VG247 has pointed me towards this blog post on the official R.U.S.E. site talking about the upcoming and completely free Manhattan Project Pack, which will add three new multiplayer maps for 2v2 and 3v3 games and two new multiplayer modes, Total War and Nuclear War. Details after the jump.

TimeGate Show Section 8′s Swarm Mode

By Jim Rossignol on November 18th, 2010.

One of the new game modes in Section 8 sequel Prejudice is one of those “co-op vs waves of bots” type modes, and TimeGate have put out an extensive ten-minute walkthrough video showing how it will work. It looks like a it could be fun, partly because the narrator gets pulled off a hoverbike by a mech and smacked on the floor, but not least because it’s the kind of mode you can play successfully with just a few friends. It’s based on the capture-point mechanism from the original game, only this time you face escalating waves of enemies, rather than fighting an equal human foe.

One of the things I liked best about Section 8 was the big, bold sci-fi architecture across the landscapes of the maps, and it looks like the TimeGate team are reaching even higher this time around, with a sprawling, impressive world playing host to this walkthrough. Admittedly, Prejudice is hard to get too excited about, simply because Section 8 didn’t quite have the staying power I’d hoped for. Nevertheless I’m interested to see how TimeGate have built on the original, and game modes like this a promising start.

In The Ungulate Nebula: Planet Horse Demo

By John Walker on November 18th, 2010.

It would be a lot easier just to go around the fence.

Following on from Farming Simulator and The Antiques Roadshow, my appetite for high-octane, adrenaline-fuelled gaming entertainment has become insatiable. I MUST HAVE MORE! I must play the demo for Planet Horse.

Terror-ist: MP Blames CS For Racist Murders

By Alec Meer on November 17th, 2010.

There’s an argument that the media shouldn’t given any air to known enfant terribles – that by giving more profile to someone who spouts wild and dangerous innacuracies you only serve to further their cause. It’s not one I believe, though – that would mean someone like disgraced game-haranguing UK politician Keith Vaz would essentially get away with ritually blaming the evil that men can do on videogames. No; any chance to reveal the flaws in his bewildering bluster and blame should be taken.

In this case, he’s accused Counter-Strike of inspiring a series of tragic shootings which occurred in Malmo, Sweden. A case local police have said appears to be part of a year-long campaign of violence against immigrants to the area. Keith has other ideas.

King Arthur: The Druids Announced

By Quintin Smith on November 17th, 2010.

If I know two things about Jim Rossignol, they’re that #1, his real name is Beavis Rossignol, and that #2, he quite enjoyed the 2009 fantasy strategy game King Arthur.

Therefore I’m glad to announce that Paradox will be realising an expansion pack, The Druids, before the end of the year, which will add a new story, a new leader, a new sandbox mode and (presumably) new units. Full press release after the jump. I’ve bolded the good bits.

Wot I Think: Dinner Date

By Quintin Smith on November 17th, 2010.

Is that Men's Fitness or Men's Health? The true measure of a man.

A few weeks ago I got dangerously excited upon hearing about being-stood-up-on-a-date simulator Dinner Date, from Dutch indie dev Jeroen D. Stout. As of 5:15pm today, Dinner Date will be available from the official site. I’ve finished it a couple of times now, and am proud to present Wot I Think.

I’m about to lay a very weird criticism at the feet of Dinner Date, a game which lets you play as the subconscious psyche of a man who’s alone in his apartment, having been stood up by his date. See, my problem with Dinner Date is that it’s not high-concept enough.
