Blink And You’ll Mys It: Myst Speed Run

By Quintin Smith on November 19th, 2010.

A computer game, yesterday.

This can take pride of place next to that 4 minute long Morrowind speed run. Somebody’s posted a video that travels all the way through Myst to the ending cutscene in a whopping 1 minute and 45 seconds. The footage is old as the hills, but the Hivemind policy on this is clear. If none of us have seen it, it’s statistically impossible for any of you to have seen it.

An Operation Flashpoint: Red River Trailer

By Quintin Smith on November 19th, 2010.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is getting an expandalone/sorta sequal at some point “between April and June” next year! There’s a hot new trailer out, and you can watch it below.

At first glance it might seem like a sweaty cache of live-action bravado that tells you little to nothing about the game, but I’m an old hand at this viral video stuff. There’s a coded message in this trailer. Just listen to the Johnny Cash song in the background.

Right Royal: Kingdom Under Fire II

By Jim Rossignol on November 19th, 2010.

It gets longer the more I think about my lost horse
Oh this is excellent. I’d entirely forgotten that the Kingdom Under Fire sequel was coming out on PC, and here it comes with a new trailer, looking all shiny and hurling monsters all over a battlefield. It’s even supposed to be out this year, although I see no precise release date. The KUF games are third person action games that take place within a kind of larger, albeit simplistic, RTS. This means you’re fighting an overall battle, but also doing violence in person as your character against hundreds of enemies. The new game looks awesome in its absurdity, as this screenshot gallery attests. It also appears to feature plenty of RPGish wandering about as your character, as well as midriffs, unlikely swords, and flying boats.

Also… Darth Vader? Is that you?

Rift: Lost Subtitle, Closed Beta

By Jim Rossignol on November 19th, 2010.

HELP, my jetpack has gone wrong
I guess we start a new tag, then. Rift no longer has its generic fantasy subtitle, and has been pruned down to just the one word. Which is interesting, since I was poking fun at that last time we mentioned the game. What is perhaps a little more significant in the life of this dimension-shifting MMO is that the beta sign ups are now open, for a closed beta dated 3rd December. Rift got plenty of good feedback at GamesCom recently, and I suspect it’s one to watch even if you are only vaguely interested in the online world business.

I’ve posted the most recent trailer below. It’s rather pretty, even if the combat seems a little… flat. Go take a look.

Gel Proves Slippery: Portal 2 Now In April

By John Walker on November 18th, 2010.

Waiting for the Valve train, late again.

In news that will only surprise Simon Surprisington of Surpriseland, Valve have declared a delay for Portal 2′s release. They’re calling it their “shortest delay in Valve history.” No longer shall we be seeing the game in February next year, but instead, April. April 18th, to be precise, which they won’t be. It’s an extra two months to wait to find out what it’s like to throw gel at the walls, without breaking into your hairdressers at night and causing trouble. Fortunately, their press release announcing this delay is very funny, so the news is more palatable. It’s below.

Guess: Which Is The Most Prolific Platform?

By John Walker on November 18th, 2010.

Some games, yesterday.

Do you know which format has the most games, lifetime? Go on, take a guess. The Gameboy? Maybe the PS2? Or was the Amiga the most prolific? No, you’re saying, this is a PC site. It must be the PC. Well, it sort of is, but it’s even weirder than that. Although it’s very nearly (and soon going to be) iOS gaming. In fact, before I reveal the answer, let’s build up to it a little more. Because there are currently more iOS games than NES, Master System, Genesis (Megadrive), SNES, PS1, N64, Saturn, Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, XNA, XBLA, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Dreamcast, DS, and PSP games added together.

No, there really are. And yet there’s one source of games that’s even more prolific. Go on, guess.

(Hopefully) Good New Games: Witcher 2

By Alec Meer on November 18th, 2010.

My god, it's full of stuff

We now know which download service CD Projekt’s much-anticipated roleplayer will premiere on, and it’s… Good Old Games. Which is slightly confusing, unless they’re using a time machine to go back and release the game on 5000 floppy discs in 1993, then re-debut it 17 years later in an age where PCs can actually run it. Still, makes sense – GOG is CDP’s own service, after all.

They’re sticking to their DRM-free guns with it and all. Which is very much practising what they preach: good on ‘em. If you’re suitably excited, you can pre-order it now. But when can you play it, and what do you get? I’m going to tease you. I’m sorry.

Johnny Depp Is A Stud

By Alec Meer on November 18th, 2010.

70 characters. christ

From now on, RPS will be exclusively dedicated to revealing hitherto unsuspected man-crushes on celebrities and tracking their every movement, Perez Hilton-style. You’re okay with that, right? Here we go: “Cube-faced, pencil-armed pin-up Johnny Depp took a break from being automatically cast in any and all Tim Burton films today to stroll down the Champs-Élysées whilst wearing a fetching distressed double-denim combo…”

Ahahah. Just my little joke. RPS doesn’t fancy men. Or women. RPS is, in fact, entirely incapable of sexual attraction to anyone or anything. Though we do get a little emotional about toffee cheescake sometimes. In fact, this post is about LEGO Pirates Of The Caribbean. You may be able to see what I did there.

Fable 3 PC Missing, Presumed Dead Coming

By Quintin Smith on November 18th, 2010.

So the Xboxers and Xboxettes are currently enjoying Fable 3. Where’s our PC version, eh? In a tweet today Lionhead Studios announced that “Fable 3 PC Version is still in development here at Lionhead so PC GAMERS don’t panic. We’ll announce details when we’re ready to do so.” You hear that? Don’t panic! Stop panicking!

It’s worth remembering that back in May, Lionhead also mentioned that Fable 3 will be available for download exclusively on the Games For Windows Live Games On Demand service. Some of you may take this as your cue to resume panicking.
