PlanetSide Next Beta “Early next Year”

By Jim Rossignol on December 19th, 2010 at 1:05 pm.

SOE’s John Smedley has been busy blogging about their games, and he says this:

“…early next year we will have announcements about Planetside Next followed by a beta. I can say this – it’s coming along awesome. I can also say that the first beta testers are going to be current Planetside subscribers. I’ve gotten a lot of email from current players offering to help test the game and we’re going to take them up on it.”

OKAY. EXCITED.

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahyes

Might have to resubscribe to get in on this

    • Biscuitry says:

This may be rather cynical of me, but I suspect that this response was exactly what that offhand comment about “current subscribers” was meant to provoke.

    • Zombat says:

Lol, I remember the Jumgate Evolution beta provoked such a response.

Glad I never kept my sub up to that

  2. Jsnuk says:

What about people who USED to subscribe but don’t anymore! I used to have a station access account thingy GIEF BETAZ PLOX.

  3. TimA says:

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

  4. Wodge says:

I don’t believe a word that Smedley fella has to say.

  5. MartinNr5 says:

Despite being a former WoW addict Cataclysm isn’t really floating my boat but this would be right up my alley.

Keeping an eye out for this one for sure.

  6. Gordon Freeman says:

YES YES YES YES YES!! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O GOD YES!

  7. airtekh says:

    Oooh interesting.

I missed the boat with regards to the first game, but it sounded like something I would have really liked. All the battle reports I read about it were awesome.

Definitely will be keeping an eye on this.

    • Wilson says:

Same here. I’ll be interested to see how it turns out.

    • Jim Reaper says:

I am in the same boat, having missed the first myself. I hope this one’s big enough for the three of us…

    • ScubaMonster says:

I tried to play it with a friend of mine, but it would crash every time about five minutes in so I couldn’t play it.

    • bill says:

I’m confused. Is the Original Planetside still going? From the wikipedia article it appears so – but going to the planetside website brings up some totally uninnformative stuff at a place called Station.

I thought I’d missed the boat on Planetside too – but maybe I just thought the boat had gone, but it’s hanging around somewhere shrouded in fog.

Anyone know if it is still going, and if so, is there a free trial? does it work on vista/7? etc….

  8. BooleanBob says:

    NOT AN ADVERB.

    • dan. says:

I feel he should have added a “yo” at the end:

      “It’s coming along awesome, yo!”

  9. Chockster says:

    Yes.

    Oh God, yes.

    I can’t fucking wait.

  10. mpk says:

I always wanted to get into Planetside, but my PC at the time couldn’t handle it and by the time it could, EVE had sunk her claws into my soul, leaving it as dark and empty as Frankie Boyle’s conscience. Might give this a go mind.

  11. Batolemaeus says:

    John Smedley.

People do not forget that easily.

    • ScubaMonster says:

Recently he made a comment about how he really liked what Cataclysm is doing for WoW, totally revamping everything, and said he’d love to do something like that with EQ2.

I smell a SWG: New Game Enhancements Part 2.

  12. Sigma Draconis says:

As someone that hasn’t played PlanetSide at all, can anyone explain what’s really good with it?

    • Rei Onryou says:

      @Sigma: Read this: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/09/05/planetside-the-1/

Planetside is what we want all MMO/FPS to aspire to (but without the client side cheating and game breaking mechs).

We won that inter-gaming blog war, dammit! I don’t care what anyone else says!

    • AndrewC says:

Battles the size of RTS battles – tanks, planes, dozens of infantry and all – but all controlled by humans and all through direct FPSy controls.

      Epic.

    • TimA says:

Epic is certainly the word. Planetside contained some of the greatest moments in gaming, ever, for me.

    • Arathain says:

It’s a sci-fi battle field with bases and tanks and planes and tons of exciting exploding things. What would you like to be doing? That’s what’s exciting.

Today I want to be the gunner for an anti-air buggy, or maybe I want to fly a dropship, or put on a heavy assault suit and heavily assault a base. Scampering about dropping mines, perhaps, or sniping. Spot of dogfighting, or maybe bombing? Drive a tank? Or maybe you fancy yourself a leader, pulling strings from squad level all the way up to strategic command.

      They’re all satisfying and fun.

    • Sigma Draconis says:

Should’ve known there was an RPS article on PlanetSide. A fine read.

So basically, it’s a thrilling MMOFPSs where the grand scale is part of the appeal. PlanetSide sounds like something I’d have subscribed if I heard about it earlier when I got a PC capable of playing it back in 2006. How many are still playing PlanetSide right now?

    • The Great Wayne says:

Myself I kinda liked tail gunning in a liberator. Remembered me of B52 and made hundreds of mosquito/reaver kills this way.

Much alike the spanish inquisition, nobody expect a good tail gunner when they enter the six of a bomber.

      Good ol’ time…

  13. frenz0rz says:

    OOOOOOOOOOH!

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!

  14. Davee says:

    Yipes! Okay, I think I’m re-subbing now!

  15. The Hammer says:

    Even the name is epic.

Looking forward to seeing the first screens and videos of this! Wheeeee!

  16. Hmm-Hmm. says:

I didn’t play the original, and I can’t say I expect anything really.. exciting from SoE, but even so.. I’ll keep my eyes on this one.

  17. Hallgrim says:

OK I’m sorry, but I just have to point out that CURRENT planetside subscribers are possibly the worst people you could get input from on how to make a successful game.

    • Jimbo says:

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. Not exactly a broad base to be taking opinions from.

  18. The Great Wayne says:

    AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

    *nerdgasm*

  19. bit_crusherrr says:

    My body is ready.

  20. Choca says:

    That’s one ugly logo

  21. Eschatos says:

As long as they keep Phantasm drops and Bangbuses, I’m in.

  22. utharda says:

As long as they don’t let McQuade or Ralph theory of fun Koster near it, I’m in.

Smedley is Sony’s peg boy, but, on a comparative level, he’s never actually attempted to Michael Jackson my inner child.

Off hand, I still have One Last Caress stuck in my head from yesterday. Glen Danzig was a !#%!#% genius.

  23. coldvvvave says:

Ok, I never tried Planetside back then because I didn’t even have an internet connection.

    So I have a question.

It’s a shooter and there are a lot of people on one map.

How is hit detection working, are there glitches like in BFBC2?

    • Wedge says:

Client side hit detection. So yes, the game is hackable, and yes, lag makes it so people can kill you before you ever see them. There’s really not much a choice when you can have 300 people fighting at once…

  24. Daiv says:

Ah, the thrill of doing an orbital drop into the very teeth of the enemy lines, hunting through the base for the last stealthed assassin, hearing the first reports of a serious counter-attack testing the perimiter while we wait nervously in darkened corridors, stroking our mouse fire buttons hoping the hack will complete and close the gaping door before their main assault gets here… The game of a thousand war stories must return!

  25. pupsikaso says:

What? Why are you excited so early? We know NOTHING of what this game is going to be like. For all we know it could be a dressed up COD *BLEGHCOUGHCOUGHCOUGH* with some online persistence.
Just because it’s PlanetSide doesn’t mean that they aren’t going to f* it up like most other sequels.

  26. rebb says:

I tried the original Game again some weeks ago, and every other minute it got me wondering why there hasn’t been a proper sequel yet.

    Do eet.

  27. televizor says:

Is the original game free to play or anything like that?
I remember reading about it years ago and I’d give it a try now.

  28. Jakkar says:

    YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES.

Oh god it’s going to be disappointing :( The original was so experimental. This thing will inevitably go all Modern Warfare Unlocks/Small scale high performance gaming on us, instead of unbearably laggy 300 man base battles so epic you cry a mixture of blood and semen…

    • The Great Wayne says:

Very rarely had any lag problem. Lag problems were just the argument of choice for those getting owned too bad :p

    • Jakkar says:

You clearly weren’t there in the early days :D Waiting patiently for my sniper rounds to hit the enemy while reavers flew backwards in the sky above me with the rubberbanding effect was only beaten by the way my lack of RAM would result in 10 minute loading times for a continent xD

  29. Mercurial says:

Please, Please, don’t let this be dumbed down rubbish……

  30. geldonyetich says:

I’m just hoping Planetside Next avoided being instanced. Huxley and Global Agenda got us excited about talk of updating Planetside, but then completely dropped the ball by limiting us to the player cap we could experience in any online FPS.

  31. Dave says:

    /me resubs to planetside.

  32. subscriber says:

Sweet — I missed out on PS first time around because I was stuck on dialup on a crappy PC. My then-clanmates’ raving about it made me insanely jealous.

  33. Nilokey says:

    Dear god yes!

    Resubscribing now.

    TR FTW!

  34. DarkWeeble says:

I want this so bad I might have to subscribe. I hate paying for beta access, though. You bastards. Might have to talk to the Holder of the Purse Strings about this soon…

  35. Tei says:

    How can Planetside 2 exist?

I trought New Conglomerate won the war, so theres no reason to make a videogame. We win guys, everyone go home.

    • coldvvvave says:

      There is only war.

    • Teddy Leach says:

      What a shame.

    • geldonyetich says:

Nobody wins Planetside. You could say NC took all the territories except the start territory at some point when you were playing the game… but all the empires have done that at some point or another. I’m not even sure NC was first. I say Vanu did. GO Vanu Sovereignty!

This was part of the reason why Planetside ended up having poor retention. Working your butt off in a 200 player siege to take all the territories sort of loses all meaning when a single guy in a stealth suit takes them all back in the middle of the night.

    • Thants says:

      War, war never changes.

    • Arcturan Megadonkey says:

Not really. Not when said siege was just about the pinnacle of fun inPC gaming IMO.

  36. El_MUERkO says:

Planetside showed more potential at launch than any other MMO before or since, the fact SOE wasted that potential by giving the game zero support means I will not allow my hopes to get raised.

Seven years!!! We should have had 4/5 major expansions and a full bore sequel since the first games launch and it’s a crying shame we haven’t!

  37. Surgeon says:

Obligatory `I love PlanetSide me` spiel from myself, as about 50% of the comments I post on here seem to mention it.
Anyway, looks like I will be resubbing to get into the beta then.
    God damn you Smedley!

  38. Jezebeau says:

While I would love a new source for 600-player mixed infantry/vehicle battles on very large maps, I expect “Planetside Next” to be a F2P conversion of Planetside.

    • Arcturan Megadonkey says:

Which, while not ideal, would also be ok with me if it led to more people playing. The reason I stopped playing years ago was not because of the mechanics (well the BFRs got tiring) or the graphics, but because the battles weren’t so epic anymore.

  39. mda says:

Am I right in assuming that planetside wasn’t (and won’t be) playable with the usual aussie-MMO-ping of 250-500ms?

  40. Jezebeau says:

I think, at this point, it’s time to plan for 2011.

  41. Sardaukar says:

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes .

And you slackers, there’s no reason to be unsubbed now. The game still has battles! Redo your certs, try a new angle. I ditched my clunky BFR for the nimble Fury ATV and haven’t looked back. Stalking armor is so fun.

  43. Kromaxx says:

As long as bloody Dave Georgeson does’t touch this game I’ll be playing it. He ruined Tribes 2 for me and then moved on to Planetside and the first thing he said was “I wantz Jetpakz They kelw! Letz poot jetpax on evarything so it goes WOOOshh and Ratatatata woooooooossshhhhhhh… weeoooooooowwoooooshhhh”

Read the guys profile online, hes a major nob and looks like a massive tard-muffin.

Ways to improve the game are:
    1. No more homing rockets! Guided rockets okay, but where the hell is the skill in fire and forget!
    2. Remove the ceiling on the sky and let the bloody aircraft gain more altitude!
    3. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE allow the aircraft to do flips and rolls! Dog fighting got pretty dull and strafing runs not so fun with the limits on.
    4. Mechs out, I noticed a massive loss in infantry because everyone wanted to be in some type of vehicle to hide from the mechs (massive game breaker for me).
    5. FF off, I felt you spent wayyyy to much time on the Grief code than actual gameplay and bug fix! Just can FF altogether and the game will be a lot better.
    6. Fix Zerging or give a massive bonus to the infantry that stay to defend an area! People would see the zerg coming, get killed and just go join with their zerg somewhere else.
    7. NO DAVE GEORGESON, very important!

  44. terry says:

John Smedley? Jesus, next you’ll be telling me precasting is coming back and Shadowbane is the next big thing.

  45. Nick says:

expect microtransactions if Smed gets his way.

  46. axed says:

this seems like a game that was a severely pleasant experience for most involved. i’ve never played it as i fall into the “didnt have the hardware or bandwidth to run it at the time” group. finding out a bit about the game, through these responses, i cant imagine a persistent yet static world would be all that appealing to me.

maybe i’ve been spoiled by eve online’s player run territorial aspect but such a game as planetside might be boring now? ill admit there are a ton of mmo’s that advertise “territorial warfare” but are pointless as nothing really changes (warhammer rvr?) but thats why i dont play them i think.

seems to me that the generic concept of mmos has run its course for me. perhaps its my age or whatever (25) but i feel cheated when i play an mmo as a rat in a maze rather than a player in a dynamic universe.

all that said, i would definitely do a trial of this PS Next game.

  47. negativedge says:

    …there are current Planetside subscribers?

I thought that game went offline like five years ago.

  48. Quine says:

Well that’s 2011 booked off. I’ll start getting the foodstuffs in.

I really hope they keep the focus back on original infantry-scale combat with vehicle support. Subsequent balance changes ruined the feel of squad-level assaults.

It would be immense if they could get Eve-style factions working across large swathes of territory- maybe have the Big Three with the option to work as mercenary outfits, but that would be a hard one to pull off without losing the Planetside flavour.

Of course, the occasional ridiculously expensive BFR or Ogre-scale tank bought for precious resources by an outfit as a nice surprise for the enemy would have great potential- they’d be targets in themselves, and trying to salvage your veteran battle-tank in the middle of a firefight for the glory of the clan would be the stuff of legends.

  49. Ovno says:

    OMG!!!!!

    I can not f’ing wait :)
