There might be a couple of minor updates during the next week, but we’re otherwise slumbering until the 3rd, when we get cracking for another year. And it’s going to be a really significant year, too. You should see my list of Stuff To Write About. It’s awesome.
On that note, I just wanted to say a couple of things. Firstly, thanks to everyone who subscribes, or who has donated cash at any point in the past. The money provided by readers has genuinely kept this site alive over the previous couple of years. We bought a new server with the money, and pretty much survived on that cash while we transitioned to having our advertising handled by Eurogamer. Subscribers should expect a huge bundle of competitions and other exclusive content in the new year, as well as a more regular newsletter! We have tonnes of games to give away and other stuff, too. So that’s a thanks to all of you.
Secondly, yes, the site is finally, thankfully, paying for us to work on it. That was always the intention, and boy was it hard work making it happen. If that profitable status changes anything then it’s that we can now focus on our efforts here, and won’t have to spend quite so much time forging wordthinks for other publications. 2011 should be the year when RPS really hits its stride, and I can’t wait to share that with you lot.
Thanks for reading, and here’s to the future.

Also, I not only subscribe, but also have adblock turned *off* on RPS. “The Hivemind are leaders of great magnitude! They have our gratitude! We forge our spirits in the tradition of our ancestors!”
25/12/2010 at 11:28 battles_atlas says:
Share the sentiments, but don’t advertisers pay on clicks not on views? In which case turning off ad-block is neither here nor there, unless you actually click on an ad, and who does that?
25/12/2010 at 11:48 jalf says:
No, advertisers typically pay for both views and clicks. (obviously they pay more for clicks than views)
(And then of course, there’s the possibility that there might one day be an ad you find relevant, and may consider clicking on)

Hurrah! Couldn’t have happened to a better gamesblogsite. Looking forward to what 2011 brings.
For Christmas, could RPS give a “stay permanently logged in” option to registered users? I find commenting a bit fiddly at present, and would get more involved if I didn’t have to log in every session. Appreciate that wordpress can be an arse with this, though.
Regardless, joyous noel and a fine new year to you all, gentlemen!

My nondenominational holiday gift of choice this year was a subscription to RPS. This site gives me so much professional and timely content that I felt it deserved the paltry $2/month you folks are asking. In an age of advertorials and astroturfing it’s so important to encourage self-published critics who can write in whatever format they wish, free from the shackles of style guides and advertiser threats.
Keep on keeping it real, RPS. Enjoy a well-deserved holiday and buy yourselves half an appetizer with my $2 this month.
24/12/2010 at 16:55 Deston says:
@ Jim – you deserve to celebrate what you’ve all achieved here mate. RPS is the greatest gaming site on the digital seas. It’s second to none, and I’m proud to be a subscriber.
I’ll also fire you guys over a little festive donation to help with keeping Walker and Quinns stocked with rum and eggs respectively during these harsh winter conditions. I gotta do something useful with my bonus before I piss it up the wall on new years. :-)
Merry Christmas everyone, all the best!

It’s genuinely pretty scary that I’ve been reading RPS now for more than three years! You guys are far and away the brightest stars of games journalism: largely optimistic, genuinely intimate, and reassuringly professional.
Thanks for all the insight, humour, and gaming news!
And Merry Christmas, too!

I didn’t realise that subscribing was only $2 a month, which is something like £1.50. Over the course of a year that’s a tiny tiny miniscule fraction of my game-related budget. Hell, I spend more than that a year on… well, everything, really.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t change the fact that I’m really poor just now, so I will subscribe on January 1st. Super mega promise.

Victory! I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see RPS hit this point, with such a bright future.
I read a /lot/ of games journalism, but it took me reading Jim Sterling’s piece yesterday about the Jonathan Blow vs. CVG rubbish to remember that something like RPS existing really is a pipe dream (http://www.destructoid.com/jonathan-blow-cvg-and-the-sh-tstorm-i-caused-190165.phtml).
Just, have a good Christmas, my good men. You really fucking deserve it.
24/12/2010 at 17:42 airtekh says:
Merry christmas guys and keep up the good work. Awesome that you are making some sort of a profit (my piffling subscription is not in vain!), hopefully that’ll mean a few more longer articles and reviews.
RPS highlight of the year for me were the Solium Infernum diaries; notable both because they were absolutely hilarious, but also because I have no interest in playing the game and yet I was totally engrossed with the demonic shenanigans.
24/12/2010 at 17:48 Quintin Smith says:
They were probably my highlight, too. Love that game.
25/12/2010 at 02:30 Jhoosier says:
I love reading about RPS’ experience playing games. Solium Infernum and Mine the Gap were my favorite series. Neptune’s Pride, too, come to think of it.
Bring back Onionbog! (I’m never going to let this go.)

About time as I’ve been round since about 3 months after the site kicked off, and I check it more often than any other website because I enjoy it more than any other website. Cheers, and Merry Xmas o7

Wait, RPS hasn’t hit its stride yet? Could have fooled me. Love the site, and glad to be a subscriber–no need for newsletters or giveaways, personally. Supporting the best source of gaming news/opinion is more than enough. Looking forward to 2011.
(On a side note, I’d really like to see more than one of you offer their take on a given game post-release–I think the different, individual voices of RPS is the biggest strength of the site, and offering just one person’s impressions of most games seems like a missed opportunity. I think it also leads to some games getting passed-over a bit by the site. For example, I fully understand why John didn’t think too much of Mafia II, but I thought it was one of the more important games this year and would’ve liked to see more about it and the “is GTA ruining open-world games” question.)
24/12/2010 at 18:19 Gassalasca says:

That being said, some more attention for PC exclusive titles (of the non-UK/US kind) would be good. There’s already too much multiplatform stuff you’d read on every games site here. I know you have to report some of these but plenty of things were missed this year or were discovered too late for a PC gaming blog.

24/12/2010 at 22:55 DrazharLn says:
Having seen similar posts here, I still don’t get what you’re on about. If you have wildly fluctuating finances, surely it is best to go for a easily cancellable monthly fee than a one time, non-returnable lump sum.
As it’s this time of year though, I might as well just point you at the subscriber’s page where if you scroll down but a little you will see a donate button that can be used for just such lump sum payments!
Happy Hogswatch.

A bold prediction: 2011 will be the Year of the PC. It will return to being undisputed king of the gaming heap as it was ehhhhh in about ’98-99, with the added fun of stomping on the ostensible competition in order to do it. I don’t want to hear any stats on how it’s always been relevent in the intervening time. Sure it has. But I mean there won’t be quite so much regurgitating of the company line that we used to hear from our erstwhile PC developers about console money and relevance. Not so much “We had to bugger up the feel of the game completely and farm out the port to a bunch of underfunded hacks trying to get their own game up some day”. Not so much protecting the delicate sensibilities of console fans/backers by shyly placing PC support down the list or removing it altogether until a later date. It’ll be more “We are releasing on PC. If you want us to support your quaint, limited purpose tv box thing, sure we’ll see if we can squeeze you in”.
That or everything’s going to be on iphone or something.
Anyway, cheers to the gang. Rest up RPS. You’ll probably need it.

First time poster here – just wanted to thank you for another great year of content on RPS.
To the community as well – for making the comment threads more fun to read than just about any other gaming-related site out there.
Keep up the good work!

Hey gents,
I’ve been lurking on the site for the last year or so (IIRC I found you lot through the amazing solium infernum writeup). I love the articles, the comments, the general laidback attitude from the entire community, and even, God forgive me, the terrible, terrible puns.
I finally subscribed this december after landing my first stable job and I’m glad to help you guys out. Here’s to another great year!

Enjoy the social obligations guys! If I win the lottery on December 31st (roughly 30 mil), I’ll donate 10% to the good cause.
Well, it might be slightly less if I actually win.

If you mean the image posted by DrazharLn, then it’s from Citizen Kane (You should watch it if you haven’t and you’re into movies, it’s kind of the Citizen Kane of films)

I meant the image posted on this article from Rock Paper Shotgun, it’s kind of the Rock Paper Shotgun of the internet.

Hurrah RPS, my favouritist internetblogmathon on the webs. I commend you for another year of quality journalism!
I’ve subscribed for the last year and a bit, made me feel like I was contributing something good in this world, although it’s a tie up between whom needs my money more, baby puppies or John, however John won out my morales.
Shame I’m stopping now, student budget just plunged into oblivion =[
Kudos to you all, heres to another year!

Dear Hivemind, fellow commentators,
merry festivities!
2011 – we live in the future now. I’m glad RPS is here to filter and compile only the best and comically worst related to digital entertainment on IBM PC* and compatibles. Keep up the most excellent work!
And comment-chaps, keep “What a shame”ing in the comments and generally being the most decent, well-tempered and well-spoken of all in the Kingdom of Internet!
*) Do mark August 12th in your calendar, it’s the IBM PCs 30th birthday!

Merry Christmas guys, hope you enjoy a well deserved restt.
Thanks for all your work thus far in creating a genuinely great website and housing perhaps the /only/ mature, generally polite and honestly communal community on the internets.
It’s a cyber home away from home and long may it continue!

Happy Christmas gentlemen, really happy to see that RPS is finally profitable. It´s, obviously, your work and your effort that made it possible, but I can’t help to feel a bit proud of being an early subscriber and clicking your ads when the page only generated incomes for some pints, it makes me feel that, sometimes, when you want something to happen and you have the talent and the will to pull it off, it can really happen.
Cheers.
(Note: I don’t believe anything you say about the newsletter anymore :P I still love ya)

The best PC gaming website in the world without a shadow of doubt. (Can anyone direct me to a better one?) Great writing, great opinions, great games. Even the hated, lambasted and stupid comments pages are a good read!!! What the hell am I supposed to do til Jan 3rd…. Who is going to guide me to gaming bliss for these few days…. Lucky that this time of year there is a bountiful selection of food to get me through these torrid times. How do the 4 of you manage to do anything? I barely have time to read this website, play games and/or socialise and work! Respect due.
Biggup.

So that is what you blokes look like. I always thought that Quintin sounded like he would be the one with the serious sideburns. Does Jim sound like the Major from Fawlty Towers when not in RPS-character?
Thanks for a great year of coverage of games and great articles and may this site (one of my favourites naturally) get better and better!
25/12/2010 at 18:58 Gassalasca says:
Is it odd that I keep refreshing RPS as often as I normally do, even though I know there won’t be any new posts for the next seven days?

Happy christmas. Good to hear this great site is paying its way, now i can stop buying those shoes that you advertize.

You are carrying: a rock, a paper, and a shotgun (loaded).
To the north, the large, imposing gates of Castle Shotgun stand before you unguarded by the usual patrols.

They large gates swing open, revealing a brightly lit entrance hall. A staircase leads upwards.

The Sunday Papers
Sundays are for attempting to play Amnesia: The Dark Descent, waking up late to find half your presents from the past days festivities replaced with cardboard cutouts, and compiling a short list of (mostly) game-related clickable letters while trying to avoid linking to a classic 1980′s heavy metal song.
Super Crate Box was named Bytejacker’s indie game of the year. Congratulations to the fine folks at Vlambeer. Impressive work.
Monaco developer Andy Schatz has returned from his trip to Asia meaning Monaco is now being worked on again.
Can’t tell the difference between iron ore and redstone? Always confusing the furnace with a storage chest? Not sure how to make those diamond boots? Perhaps this crafting guide will be of use.
Jim Rossignol’s This Gaming Life: Travels in Three Cities can be read in its entirety online. A wonderful book that will tide you over until RPS comes back in the new year. Unless, of course, you read through it in a day or two.
There’s a very impressive post over on Metafilter about Starship Titanic, an adventure game by Douglas Adams. Links to the game itself, extra content, instructions on how to run the game on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and an entire thirteen part video playthrough are available.
The Mysterious Explorations of Jasper Morello. A VERY impressive animated short film in a unique silhouette art style.
“We shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!”
Failed.

Merry Christmas to not only the RPS guys but to all the lovely folks from the comments and forums who make RPS a wonderful place to discuss games, talk nonsense, make shoddy puns and so on. You’re all lovely.

Happy Horacemas RPS, commenters and shoe spammers ! This is definitely a great place on the webternet.
And I have one question: how do I unadblock RPS ? Removing filters with rockpapershotgun.com in the address didn’t work.

This site finally made me realize it’s OK to pay for content on the internet. I still pay a lot more for a magazine that gives me far less content and ingenuity in comparison.
