Bit Of Posh: Test Drive Unlimited 2

By John Walker on December 8th, 2010.

A car, yesterday.

Come on open world racing games, smarten up. After the weak Need For Speed World, and the almost great Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, I’m now banking my hopes on next year’s big-money, big-car Test Drive Unlimited 2. The original Test Drive Unlimited also fell into the “almost great” category, so I’m very much hoping to see even more this time. To get an idea of whether that’s happening, there’s a new trailer below.

Antisocial Network: Evil Genius On Facebook

By Alec Meer on December 7th, 2010.

Somehow, 2000AD owners/ AvP developers Rebellion ended up owning the Evil Genius IP in the wake of Elixir’s sad demise, and they’ve finally revealed their nefarious plans for the spiritual Dungeon Keeper sequel – a social network adaptation that should perhaps be known as MinionVille.

Oddboxx Alive, Hitting This December

By Quintin Smith on December 7th, 2010.

'Yeah, you heard me. I called you a chicken.'

A year ago (wow!) Jim posted news that the PC would be seeing the release of Oddboxx, a pack of all the Oddworld games including the never-released-on-PC titles Munch’s Odyssey and the wonderfully perverse bounty hunting game Stranger’s Wrath, plus some small additions and extras. Well, I can now announce that Oddbox is not only alive and kicking, but it’ll be released “this holiday season” on plenty of big direct to drive outlets, including Steam. Are you excited? You should consider being excited. Look, I’ll post a video of Stranger’s Wrath (which has an 88% Metacritic score, BY THE WAY) after the jump.

Ghostbusters Electronic Video Footage

By Jim Rossignol on December 7th, 2010.

Who you gonna call? Well the fire department, hopefully. Jesus.
The pictures that move have looked into the future and foreseen the workings of a new Ghostbusters game, known as Sanctum Of Slime. The glimpses we get of the 4-player co-op game make it look fairly colourful and entertaining, with a moderate chance of progressing into being mental. It’s got a chaotic Smash TV sort of thing going on, but with a whizzy 3D camera and crossing of the streams. Go take a look.

The Games Of Christmas ’10: Day 7

By RPS on December 7th, 2010.

SEVEN!
Today’s window on out advent calendar likes to be turned upside-down. It takes all sorts, eh? Adopt a brave face and give it a try. No, not like that. Try again. No, no. Again. No, you’ve got it all wrong. Try it one more time. You did it! Excellent. Today’s game will be very pleased…

Talk Tech: The Witcher 2

By Quintin Smith on December 7th, 2010.

Never bring a cold sword to a hot sword fight, that's my motto.

Apropos of nothing, I’ve joined the rest of RPS in becoming deeply excited about The Witcher 2. Look at it! Swords, hair, grass. Great. Last month Jim posted a nine minute video of CD Projekt talking about the tech behind the game, and today they’ve released part 2, which awaits you beneath the jump. At one point they use the word “polish”, which I of course read as “Polish”, in the context that they would “Polish” their game engine. That was weird.

Unsecret: The Agency Due Later Next Year

By Jim Rossignol on December 7th, 2010.

Splinter what?
Speaking of long-delayed MMOs, VG247 spotted that SOE have revealed that The Agency is now scheduled for the second half of 2011. The combat-led MMO has apparently required quite a lot more work to make it enjoyable, and it certainly had a quiet showing at E3. I’ve posted the most recent game footage below – a PvP sequence – for reference. And it does look kind of interesting, what with being a proper manshooter and everything. What still isn’t quite clear right now is how the hub-based missions will create a sense of “worldiness” and quite how the “massive” aspect of the game will manifest. We’ve had a few failures in that regard since PlanetSide.

Shipwrecked: Tomb Raider Details Appearing

By John Walker on December 7th, 2010.

At a certain point it seems strange that she's still called Lara.

The first few scraps of information about the new Tomb Raider, officially revealed yesterday, are beginning to appear. NeoGAF have been plundering the unreleased Game Informer article by their own nefarious methods, and we learn a few interesting morsels. Like, for instance, Lara is to be 21 in the new game. Keys to the tomb. And deaths are to be brutal. Erk. It’s sounding like this is going to be part Tomb Raider, part Survivor, and I’m very intrigued. More bits and pieces below.

Wormhole Brief: Jumpgate Lawsuit

By Jim Rossignol on December 7th, 2010.

Oh dear, it seems that the big old delay on the release of Jumpgate Evolution isn’t simply down to putting on a few more layers of polish. IncGamers spotted that Codemasters are suing developers NetDevil, and parent company Gazillion, for breach of contract. The UK publisher is seeking the repayment of development costs and its legal expenses. A PDF of the complaint filed can be found here. Codemasters have declined to make any further comment, but the proceedings leave the final release of the game in doubt. NetDevil had previously stated that they wouldn’t release the game until they were happy with it, so it will be interesting to see what further light is cast on that by the case.

But hey, it was kind of bland when we saw it a preview… (EDIT: It also seems that Netdevil founder, and Jumpgate originator, Scott Brown, has left Netdevil.)

Editorial: Panorama – Addicted To Games?

By John Walker on December 6th, 2010.

It's strange that they feel it's okay to keep using this name for the programme.

Timed to coincide with tonight’s release of World Of Warcraft’s Cataclysm, BBC 1′s Panorama tonight covered the topic of videogame addiction. I have always approached the subject of gaming addiction with great seriousness, because it’s my belief that if gaming is inherently harmful, I want to know about it, and I want to warn others who game. And I want to approach the subject with appropriate scrutiny, and with evidence-based understanding. It’s something I expect of others when they approach the subject. It was not present tonight. It was astonishing. An openly ignorant series of anecdotes and half-truths, forming a dangerous, lazy treatment of a serious subject.
