The Games Of Christmas ’10: Day 18

By Nursey on December 18th, 2010.

Oh, Hello. Sorry to barge into your young men’s website like this, but… you have girls here? Oh, how charming. Times do change. Oh, deary me. Anyway – I’m John Walker’s nurse, and the only way I could get him to lie down was to promise that I’d transcribe everything he said in his delirious state and put it on the Internet. Oh, I’m blogging? Oh my! What would Mavis say if she saw me now? Anyway! He tells me that the eighteenth game of Christmas is…

The RPS Bargain Bucket: Snowed in

By Lewie Procter on December 18th, 2010.

This is the particularly lovely wintery view from my window this morning. Have you got snow?

Winter has got its frosty grip on the UK. I recommend you stay in doors with a cup of hot tea, and play some of these lovely cheap video games. Do not go outside unless it is an absolute emergency. Some Christmas sales have already kicked off, although the big Steam one won’t be with us for a few days. Be sure to keep an eye on SavyGamer.co.uk if you want to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the epic savings this holiday season. Here’s this week’s selection: Read the rest of this entry »

And Now: A Tour Around Jeklynn Heights

By Jim Rossignol on December 18th, 2010.

This week I spoke to Vex Studios’ Ryan Wenke about their forthcoming UDK-based game, Jeklynn Heights. It’s a sort of spooky fairytale multiplayer game with visuals that look like something out of one of the Alice games, or a Tim Burton movie. If that wasn’t interesting enough, it’s also messing about with a number of concepts such as character progression and mixed perspectives. Wenke told me a bit about his studio’s esoteric approach to game development, and opens an invitation to you lot to sign up to the beta test of the game and find out what it’s all about.

TF2 Aussie Christmas Upate Is, Er, Medieval

By John Walker on December 18th, 2010.

My brain hurts.

As I wake up to a thick blanket of snow that I’m too ill to venture out in, and curse the skies for their endlessly cruel mockery, I do spare a thought for the Australians. In fact, a good half of the planet lives under the hegemony of the romanticised “white Christmas”, as their Peanuts cartoons and idyllic snowglobes contradict the lovely sunny day outside. This plight is also seemingly recognised by Team Fortress 2, which has just released an updated entitled, Australian Christmas.

Dragon Age 2 Wants You Back

By Alec Meer on December 17th, 2010.

There’s been a tangy whiff of “hmm” around Dragon Age 2 amongst the PC faithful, with the game apparently headed in something of a press all the buttons kill all the monsters press them kill them press them kill them direction we perhaps hadn’t expected from our beloved tactics’n'conversation opus. Turns out that perhaps we’ve got the wrong impression, though.

Now, while this video makes the bewildering mistake of primarily consisting of a chattering man filmed in near-darkness, it also very deliberately seeks to demonstrate that pause’n'play tactical combat remains present and correct in the PC version of the game. Read the rest of this entry »

Demonstration Module: I Must Run

By John Walker on December 17th, 2010.

It's somehow so... familiar.

Oh my goodness, I’m so ill. This is the longest I’ve managed to sit upright for two days. Something is definitely wrong with with human body when it cannot sit up without then needing an hour’s sleep. But such is my dedication to the wonder of RPS that I feel compelled to at least write something before the week is over. So what more appropriate game name than I Must Run – an activity that if I were to try my legs would shatter like frail china, collapsing me to the ground in a thousand pieces. Although as you start the demo it adds the apposite tagline, “And never come back.”

Apocalypse WoW: Free Cataclysm Trial

By Quintin Smith on December 17th, 2010.

A wolf in geek's clothing, there.

DO YOU own World of Warcraft, plus Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King but not Cataclysm? Would that describe your situation? As of today Blizzard are offering you guys a free 10 day trial to sample Cataclysm’s doomsday delights. You’ll need a level 78 character to try out most of the new zones (which our man-on-the-inside Al Bickham writes about here), but failing that you’ll still be able visit the bizarre new Goblin starting area or the Worgen’s gothic home (which Bickham writes about here). So, yes. Go, go, go! Go and be delighted.

The Games Of Christmas ’10: Day 17

By RPS on December 17th, 2010.

RPS has a plan. This plan will lead us to ULTIMATE TRIUMPH. If we take even a single misstep, however, all is doomed. We must be pure. We must be vigilant. We must behave.

Prepare for descent. Open the seventeenth window, and to victory!

Hey, Here Is A Shogun 2 Video

By Jim Rossignol on December 17th, 2010.

What happens in the video? Well, it seems that a young castle is killed. Poor thing. It was quietly grazing on the mountainside and along came some castle-hunters and stuck a siege-machine in its belly. It was then skinned and the bricks were eaten by peasants. Nasty business.

In related news: I interviewed CA studio director Mike Simpson the other day. We talked about Shogun 2 and the problems with Empire and lots of other interesting stuff. Expect that interview on Monday. It’s a decent read. Now, go take a look at the fate of that castle.

Pipe Mania: Pipedreamz

By Quintin Smith on December 17th, 2010.

Merry Christmas. Messhof has a new game out, and it’s called Pipedreamz. I’m going to go ahead and say that he named the game after the drug-pipe he uses to smoke his drugs! I am saying that Messhof’s games are weird. Messhof, if you want to sue me for libel then this is my email address.

Pipedreamz embodies the Californian dream of working in a burger shop, riding the waves, scarfing down tasty snacks and (more generally) trying to get as high a score as possible before you’re fired. Like most of Messhof’s games, the music’s amazing and it’s better played than described. It’s also not Nidhogg. MESSHOF! Snap whatever legal shackles are preventing you from releasing Nidhogg and release it. The people need it in their lives. Thanks to the IndieGames blog for the tipoff. Merry Christmas, IndieGames blog.

Champlified: Bloodline Champions Open Beta

By Quintin Smith on December 17th, 2010.

Just like that, Bloodline Champions has entered open beta! Anyone interested in downloading and playing the skill-focused arena game can do so here. Good news indeed. BC is my favourite out of all the Defense of the Ancients-inspired games that I’ve tried. It streamlines each match into a minute of white-hot combat, and the way it’s designed allows for displays of skill and cunning that make you want to stand up from your chair and salute. You can currently pre-order Bloodline Champions for £24.99 to get some special benefits when it comes out (whenever that is), so interested parties would be wise to try the game now. Thanks to Blues for the news. Open beta launch trailer follows…
