It’s hard to see how we’re going to top this story in 2011. Unless Bethesda announces that Skyrim will have always-on DRM to prevent the game causing addiction to BioShock 2, this has to be the ultimate in RPS. It’s Minecraft and Kinect.
Kotaku spots that Nathan Viniconis has figured out a way to take a depth image with the 360′s Kinect and then have Minecraft translate this into its world. Pow!
Using some Python scripting (it would have been better in PERL, obviously), Viniconis has achieved meta glory. He explains exactly how in meticulous detail on his website from 1995.
So he takes a photo with the magical lasery eyes of Kinect:

Then he does his evil witchcraft or whatever it is, and within Minecraft he gets:

Then: megalomania.

Oh, RPS… you crashed his server with your flood of traffic.
10/01/2011 at 13:26 Baboonanza says:
That’s a bit on an unfair dig at his website, I prefer his nice-and-simple design to many, many over-developed sites. Not every pagre requires javascript links to 10+ other domains and 2.0 crap up the ying-yang. Maybe I’m just an old fogey though.
It’s a pretty cool project, though I wonder how someone so clever can have such a terrible beard.

I think you may not have seen the front page: http://www.orderofevents.com/MineCraft/
10/01/2011 at 13:37 Navagon says:
Yeah, that’s right. We haven’t. The popularity you guys thrust upon the poor unsuspecting kinectimals’ website has killed it.

I bet he’s wishing he had an advert on that page now…

I can’t see the images (other than the background), but I can see the page. And I have to agree with the OP: I wish more pages looked like this one. Simple conveyance of information without a bazillion links going everywhere. No mention of facebook or blogs or twitter anywhere on the page.
Myspace and geocities pages usually sucked, but GOOD web 1.0 beats good web 2.0 any day of the week.

The design of the page linked to in the main post seems good to me. It’s simple and to the point.
Shame about the code. :-(

This is what happens when tachnogadgets are used in conjunction with a proper gaming platform.

Of course, with MC you can model all the subsurface bits too. Someone needs to wire a PET scanner to Minecraft. Extra points if you render blood as lava, nerves as redstone and kidney stones as diamonds.
10/01/2011 at 13:38 Jim Rossignol says:
I think the biggest story of 2011 will be that Ubisoft’s DRM made us all addicted to Bioshock piracy.

Is there any reason not to buy minecraft?
10/01/2011 at 13:47 Navagon says:
Well there is the fact that it has now taken to regularly bloody crashing on me then spawning me in a ton of rock when I load it back up. That gets old fast. I want the alpha version back. :(
10/01/2011 at 14:28 UW says:
Navagon: Yep, I’ve actually stopped playing altogether because of this issue.

I’m not the only one! I love being on fire underground. With all my stuff. Inside a cave that I haven’t made yet.
Also, microsoft are really dumb, it seems like the hardware/software that they made is really frubbin powerful. There’s almost a new reason every week to support Kinect-ness on PC.
11/01/2011 at 00:51 Navagon says:
If a patch is due in Thursday then hopefully this will be sorted. I tried posting on the Minecraft support forum but my thread was buried under a ton of others in no time. So I’m fairly sure Notch knows the game has problems and more problems than usual.

10/01/2011 at 14:30 Jonathan says:
While I salute the effort it does look a bit crap, doesn’t it? It’s like slapping a bad .gif over a nice photograph. Also, I wonder what it looks like behind what’s in the screenshots — Kinect won’t have any data for that.
Mr Negative strikes again!
10/01/2011 at 14:40 James says:
Heh…so you’re saying it’s not practical for real-world use? ;]

Maybe you were trolling about perl, but it would probably be the worst language to write something like this in.
Python already has an extensive set of image processing, image analysis, and i/o bindings. It is, in fact, probably the best language to write something like this in. There is a reason those of us in the visual effects industry use it as our prototyping/glue language.
10/01/2011 at 17:50 Ergates_Antius says:
And it’s Perl (or perl), not PERL – it’s not an acronym.
