GoG Reveals Latest Adventure Releases

By John Walker on January 18th, 2011.

Another moustachioed character!

On Friday we were playing a guessing game. Why did Good Old Games have police tape up all over their site – a site made out of ASCII? My guess was the Police Quest series. Very sharp-eyed readers noticed the faces in the background and guessed the Zork games. We were all right!

Good Old Games have today added to their catalogue both the first four Police Quest games, and the Zork Anthology.

An Interview With Iron Helmet Games

By Jim Rossignol on January 18th, 2011.

If one thing gets RPS’ collective heart racing, it’s slowform strategy games with inscrutable diplomatic dimensions. Well, John’s bit of the heart doesn’t race to that, but it’s cold and black, and makes this weird groaning noise… Anyway, one company which has been masterful in the production of these kinds of games is Australian outfit Iron Helmet, who have been responsible for first Neptune’s Pride and now Blight Of The Immortals, both browser-based multiplayer strategies of excellent repute. We spoke to their mastermind, Jay Kyburz, and asked him to explain his activities.

Son Of A Gun: Cannon Fodder 3 Announced

By Quintin Smith on January 18th, 2011.

Looking forward to today's 3D efforts looking this naff.

EDIT: Ah. Allow me to bring you back down to Earth with a bump. Codemasters has told Eurogamer that despite GFI’s plans to release the game for both PC and Xbox 360, they do not have plans to release the games outside of Russia and the CIS territitories. Here’s a picture of the CIS territories. Do you live there? Didn’t think so. Perhaps if GFI knock the game out of the park, Codemasters will look at bringing the game to the rest of the globe. The original news story follows.

News! News! Here is the news. Russian developer/publisher GFI, who had a hand in the creation of The Precursors, Boiling Point, White Gold (the sequel to Boiling Point) and about a thousand pieces of shovelware nonsense has announced the development of another sequel to classic 90s PC game Cannon Fodder, in collaboration with Codemasters. Would you like to see the image and press release? Alright, soldier, you’ll find it all below. Double-time it!

FatShark Talk Hamilton’s Great Adventure

By John Walker on January 18th, 2011.

There are not enough moustachioed characters.

They behind the indie multiplayer shooter Lead And Gold, and remade classic Bionic Commando: Rearmed, have taken quite a different direction for their next game. Hamilton’s Great Adventure is a co-op third-person puzzle/adventure. The announcement intrigued us enough to want to know more, so we threw questions at developers FatShark. Their thoughts on co-op, humour and hats are below.

Skyrim’s Creation Engine Detailed

By Quintin Smith on January 18th, 2011.

Game Informer‘s only gone and posted plenty of info on the new engine powering The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, though the article tells you plenty about the game too, and there’s even a screenshot! Look at it up there. So pretty. If I’m honest, that screenshot might be the single most interesting part of this post. Still, let’s you and me soldier on for appearance’ sake. By the way, did you know the Skyrim’s due out for release this Christmas? So soon!

Kooky: Sverak & Dvorský Film Now In English

By John Walker on January 18th, 2011.

Aw, cuddles!

You may remember that back in April Alec brought us news of a film – now named just Kooky – featuring the work of Amanita Design‘s Jakub Dvorský. The Czech film, from Oscar winning director Jan Sverak, looked unbelievably gorgeous in its trailer, but of course a little linguistically impenetrable by those not of Czech descent. The film, which isn’t a game but we don’t care because Dvorský is involved, has now received a dubbing into English.

But before you scream out, “But subtitles are better than dubbing!”, Sverak explains that “Kooky is too packed with visuals for these to work.” There’s a few more details, and the freshly dubbed trailer below. And gosh, who is that providing the trailer narration? It’s only Jeremy Irons.

EDGE On How Angel Of Darkness Went Wrong

By John Walker on January 17th, 2011.

A phoenix dying in the flames.

An article I have always wanted to write is an investigation into what went wrong with Tomb Raider: Angel Of Darkness. The idea of a game produced with so much money, and on so many years of success, being such a spectacular failure fascinates me. I’ve long wanted to find out how such a thing happens. But because I’m too busy playing Minecraft and watching the worst Stephen King films I can find (The Mangler next!), I never got around to it. Fortunately, one of the anonymous hooded figures in the EDGE collective has, and I can finally read the article I wanted without having to do all that work. Hooray! But also, Ooooooh. Because it’s a pretty sad story.

Justice For Desktop Dungeons

By Alec Meer on January 17th, 2011.

As you may recall, last December saw the frankly maddening news that an alleged rotter had allegedly cloned QCF Design’s most splendid Desktop Dungeons. The goodly chaps behind said ten-minute roguelike were worried they mightn’t be able to do anything about it. Turns out, they could.

League of Epic Heroes – for it is no longer damaging to QCF to reveal the alleged rotter’s allegedly cloned alleged game – has been withdrawn by its author.

And it’s starting on the 31st of the month. THQ say: “The beta is scheduled to go live on Monday 31 January when global press and key Dawn of War® community members will be given access. No PC Bulletstorm Demo, CliffyB Indifferent

By John Walker on January 17th, 2011.

No finding out whether this is the sort of thing you want.

Aw, that Cliffy B is such a sweetheart. With the news that Bulletstorm demos will be available for the 360 and PS3, but not the PC, clearly a few people with a big grey box are a little miffed. Is this in case of demo piracy? Er um. So the gaming’s Man Of Tact, as Blues report, has attempted to quell the storm with a thoughtful and thought-provoking tweet on the matter:

http://bit.ly/eTr0BR – BULLETSTORM DEMO COMING TO 360/PS3 JANUARY 25th. In other news, PC gamers are grumpy about this.”

Meanwhile, even though they don’t deserve it, there’s a couple of new videos below.
