Newtonian Rebellion: Defy Gravity Demo

By John Walker on January 12th, 2011.

TAKE THAT, GRAVITY!

Defy Gravity is not an instruction. It’s the title of a game. I don’t want anyone thinking Rock, Paper, Shotgun has told them to fling themselves out of an upstairs window. But do set fire to your head.

Rather this is a classic-style scrolling platformer, inspired by Metroid, Mega Max X and Braid. It involves firing either gravity wells or anti-gravity wells – orbs that either draw you in or repel you away – in order to negotiate the terrain. More onward.

Dusky Balls: NightSky Demo

By John Walker on January 12th, 2011.

A ball. Last Thursday, evening.

NightSky – the latest game from micro-platforming supremo Nifflas, is out now. And if that’s not exciting enough news for you, there’s a demo to try to get you there. The full game is £10, but the demo – it’s free! Crazy. Once more it’s physics platforming, this time rolling a metal sphere through levels in a peculiar dream world. Knowing that it’s Nifflas, through Nicalis, should be all the information you need. The original trailer is below.

Bulletstorm Diorama For Satirical Reference

By Jim Rossignol on January 12th, 2011.

I spent some time trying to figure out how to crowbar in my own reference to that bit in The Simpsons where Skinner declares there to be a “diorama-rama”, but it just didn’t work. Anyway, this is the Bulletstorm trailer where they get clever, because it’s a diorama scene that reference’s Halo’s one, and that is like a satire or something. Ah, “pastiche”. Yeah, that’s the stuff. Go watch it, and think about how well Epic know their audience. Pretty well, I reckon.

Mod News: Early Bird

By Lewis Denby on January 12th, 2011.

Welcome to another Mod News, folks. I don’t like to start with an excuse, but for the next couple of weeks I’ll be compiling these just a little bit early, as I’m away in the latter halves of the weeks in question. If I’ve missed anything really huge that’s happened in the last 24 hours or so, try not to kill me: I’ll lob it in with next week’s update. Onwards for the past seven days in mod-related happenings, then…

Play Monday Night Combat On A Wednesday

By Quintin Smith on January 12th, 2011.

We knew colourful multiplayer future-scrap Monday Night Combat was coming out on PC on the 24th of January. We did. What we didn’t know, and by “We” I mean “I”, what I didn’t know, right, was that if you pre-order it on Steam you basically could have been playing the beta this whole time.

Elemental Expands With Fallen Enchantress

By Quintin Smith on January 12th, 2011.

Somebody's been playing with an LED and low shutter speeds!

(EDIT: OK, missed this. Fallen Enchantress will also be free to anyone who purchased Elemental before 2010 (Surely you mean 2011, Quinns? – Jim). That’s a Hell of a thing.)

Couple of things. First of all, Big Download‘s assembled the information on Elemental: War of Magic’s upcoming expansion pack, Fallen Enchantress. Who is the Enchantress? Why did she fall down? Was she drunk? We don’t know, but we do know the expansion will add new spells, equipment, new ways of using magic and new areas that must be purged of enemies before you can settle in them. These will include the Bhinadmi Fissure, where a player must walk up to the edge and challenge the Elemental Lord that lives within. Mm! Mm.

Second, Stardock CEO Brad Wardell has been making some interestink predictions in an interview with Gamasutra that Elemental is going to end up costing his company money.

Lego Universe’s Space Ninjas Unmasked

By Jim Rossignol on January 12th, 2011.

Despite feeling a little lukewarm towards the release-month accomplishments of Lego Universe, we’re still keen to keep an eye on it. And the game – which was fairly small on release – is expanding. The latest reveal shows off Crux Prime, which shows skeleton minfigs mining on asteroids, and which reportedly contains some kind of martial arts monastery where players can learn “Spinjitzu”. This is, apparently, related to the real-world toys’ new Ninjago line, which features ninjas and the undead in conflict. The new zone will contain 100 new missions and will appear in the game in a few weeks time.

There’s a lovely trailer for Crux Prime just here.

Gemini Rue Trailer Is Badass, Game Out Feb

By Quintin Smith on January 12th, 2011.

Dentists become exponentially creepier the more of them there are. That's a fact.

Gemini Rue, a dark, sci-fi adventure game that won the Student Showcase award at 2010′s IGF is coming out next month, and it’s looking tight like a baby in a bottle. Have a gander at the trailer after the jump. If all point’n'click games could be as dramatic as this, I might, y’know, sometimes play one of them. I actually got the chance to try Gemini Rue at last year’s EG Expo, and it reminded me of Snatcher and the Blade Runner game in all the right ways. Thanks to RPS reader Mysterious-Man-Who-Does-Not-Wish-To-Be-Named for the trailer tipoff.

Champions Online Free-To-Playness Dated

By Jim Rossignol on January 11th, 2011.

It was announced back in 2010 that Champions Online would be moving to a free-to-play model, but that has now been dated: JANUARY 25TH IS THE DATE. Needless to say, you can keep subscribing to unlock loads of the content that will now be available via the “C-Store”, or you can play for free and buy various content packs with micro-cash. Here’s an FAQ that may answer and questions you might have. I link to that because can’t answer them, not accurately anyway, but if you do want to ask questions in the comments below I’ll have a wild stab at answering them when I wake up in the morning. Or I might just forget, or idly blog links to Minecraft texture packs instead. Anyway, you can already play some of Champions for free, because there is a trial mode thing, or “demo”. Hooray!

You will remember, of course, that Champions Online wasn’t as much fun as City Of Heroes, which was a shame, but that’s life, eh?

First Details For Stalker 2?

By Jim Rossignol on January 11th, 2011.

Pat over at VG247 points out that Official Stalker Facebook page has a brief Q&A that seems to reveal the first details about the game and its all-new engine. It will be set in the familiar Chernobyl Zone locations, and will apparently have more of a survival element the next time around, as well as the return of the spooky lab bits. There will be no faction wars in the sequel, but there will be DX11 support, and the “area of artifact application will expand”. The Q&A also goes out of its way to stress that despite the announced multiplatform intentions for this new game, the PC version will not suffer, and will be the target platform. Interesting stuff. Needless to say, I’ve asked GSC for a detailed interview about the game.
