That’s The Point: Super Spike Dislike

By Quintin Smith on January 5th, 2011.

Super Spike Dislike is a freeware indie game where you play a bouncing ball. But wait! There’s more. You also have to dodge spikes. You can get it here. I heard about it from Mike Rose, of the Indie Games blog.

When Mike emails me with a game it’s a bit like being a kid when your well-meaning yet comprehensively unstable father comes home. Is he going to teach me a lesson? Tell me a mysterious story? Make me laugh? Or cry? With Super Spike Dislike, he basically showed up with two tanks of gasoline and set fire to the house with all of us inside it. You should probably play it. Good night.

By Jim Rossignol on January 5th, 2011.

We do love a bit of Arma 2 action here at RPS – it’s a regular for game nights, and an all round top manshoot – and so it’s a delight to be able to announce this year’s Bohemia Interactive Community Awards. You can nominate your favourite mods, missions and videos just here. For a reminder of the highlights of last year’s event, check out the winners here. Full details of the awards can be found beneath the click.

Measure Yourself

By Alec Meer on January 5th, 2011.

Do you own a DirectX 10 NVIDIA graphics card, run the 64 bit version of Windows 7, have an Intel dual core CPU, 4GB of RAM and speak English?

Then you’re average. Sooooooooooooo average. How does that make you feel, Mr Average? Does it make you feel… average?

Angry Internet Birds

By Alec Meer on January 5th, 2011.

Angry internet birds. Like angry internet men, but birds.

I know how this works. I’m going to mention Angry Birds and you’re going to say how much you despise it and how games x, y, z and xyz are much better. Fine, got it, understand, you don’t need to tell me after all. I’m going to mention it anyway, because it’s vaguely surprisingly to hear that the weirdly sterile iOS catapult game has turned up on PC.

Athlete’s Fleet: Star Battle

By Quintin Smith on January 5th, 2011.

Question, hot shot. What’s the most popular user-created map on the European StarCraft II servers right now?

I bet you have no idea. I bet a single bead of sweat just appeared on your forehead. Ah, youth! You’re cute. Here’s the answer: It’s Star Battle, a 6v6 Defense of the Ancients-style mod that uses not fantastic heroes, but sluggish, superpowered space-ships. So, Defense of the… Space.. ncients? Anyway, it looks swell.

Daily Kinect Hack: Become A Superhero!

By John Walker on January 5th, 2011.

Invincible cat!

Yeah, sure, Kinect hacks are this month’s Minecraft creations, but get over it. Because this one’s about turning into a superhero. And FIRING LASER BEAMS OUT OF YOUR EYES. Attention got.

I briefly mentioned yesterday, Microsoft has stated that it has no intentions of releasing a Kinect for the PC, but the tech types behind the device are working with ASUS on something extremely similar. The WAVI Xtion will be properly revealed this Summer.

Spotted by Joystiq, this is my favourite so far. You can see the video below.

Offline Gaming: EA Announces Latest Cull

By John Walker on January 5th, 2011.

Are you part of the 1 per cent?

Nothing lasts forever. Entropy takes care of that. (Except for Radio 4′s Money Box Live, which exists outside the boundaries of physics and is eternally on my bloody radio.) But some things are more short-lived than you might be expecting. EA have announced the latest round of their games to have their online support removed, and there’s some recent stuff in there. FIFA Manager 10 is to go, along with FIFA 09. That’s on PC, with a raft of 09 and 10 dated games on the consoles also losing their support. Some older games are going too, including both The Lord Of The Rings: The Battle For Middle-Earth games (2004 and 2006) having already shut down on New Year’s Eve, and 2008′s The Sims Carnival going on the 17th. EA stresses that this represents only 1% of their online players, and point out that it’s a lot of work and money to keep these games going. To see the full list of games that are going, across all formats, look below.

Some Impressions: Cities In Motion

By Quintin Smith on January 5th, 2011.

Get out of your cars! All of you! Right now! Please! I'm begging you!

Cities in Motion! It’s a transport tycoon game from Paradox that’s due out at the tail-end of next month. I’ve been playing with the latest build, and I actually have a problem with the game’s title. It should clearly have been called Cities in Gridlock, or Cities Keeping Perfectly Still. What I’m saying here is that I am bad at Cities in Motion.

Tomb Raider Screens Locked In A Cupboard

By John Walker on January 5th, 2011.

I wonder what Tomb Raider looks like.

Update: The cropped Tomb Raider images illustrating this article – which was essentially a long-winded link to Game Informer’s site – have been removed. This is because Game Informer – after threatening our readers on Twitter – sent us a legal threat of our very own. A slightly ironic reaction bearing in mind the content of the original post, which is below.

Look, There Go The Voxels: Voxatron

By Jim Rossignol on January 5th, 2011.

Lexaloffle have posted up a preview video of their new game, Voxatron, which is “an arena shooter set in a completely destructible voxel world.” It also appears to have running and jumping elements. There do indeed appear to be voxels, too. This looks totally excellent! Go watch the video, below.

Mod News: New Year Bumper Pack

By Lewis Denby on January 5th, 2011.

It’s January! Oh my. Two weeks have passed since the last Mod News, since RPS went to sleep for a little while while we all ate and drank and suchlike. Typically, there were more happenings on the mod scene during that fortnight than in a long time. So welcome to an extra special bumper edition of Mod News, to help you burn off that Christmas fat.
