Impressions: Get Reacquainted With Jack

By Richard Cobbett on February 11th, 2011.

AAARGH! THE FACE THAT HAUNTED A THOUSAND NIGHTMARES!

Given the dietary habits of tortoises, what would the Teenage Mutant Ninja TORTOISES most likely order at Pizza Hut? What do a Victoria’s Secret model and the mineral feldspar have in common? Considering their natural life cycles, which Muppet Baby shouldn’t have arms? How many Earths could you stuff into the volume of Uranus? If I wanted to whack one ‘mole’ worth of moles during a game of Whack A Mole, how many moles would that be?

You Don’t Know Jack is back. It’s about damn time.

Real: DNF Balls Of Steel Edition Surfaces

By Quintin Smith on February 11th, 2011.

Is there any subtext in the game box art, do you think?
UPDATE: Confirmed as real, though it’ll be available in America only and just here from Amazon.com.

The above image was posted on the French Duke Nukem Forever forums last night. I’m still running it through the RPS Bullshit-O-Tron, but figure even if it’s fake it’s an entertaining fake. And I keep thinking back to that IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Collector’s Edition image that leaked and turned out to be real. HMM. I’ve run through what look to be the contents after the jump, or you can click on the picture for a slightly bigger one of it. Or both! Do both.

Retribution Beta For Dawn Of War Steamers

By Jim Rossignol on February 10th, 2011.

Oh, I missed this before, but VG247 picked it up: anyone who owns a Dawn Of War game on Steam can now get into the Retribution beta. UPDATE: Or anyone else can just try for a key here.

I had a bit of play with the Imperial Guard at the weekend, and it was fantastic. I particularly like the ogryns as a melee unit. Not that I think they are really that effective, they just look great as you send them into battle. I’ll try and get up some more words on this soon. Wow, there is a lot going on at the moment. And March is even busier!

Crysis 2′s Nanosuit Has Surprising Features

By Jim Rossignol on February 10th, 2011.

Men. They get shot
CryTek are revamping the “Nanosuit Showroom” thing on their website, rightly surmising that the clever battlesuit is the best thing that Crysis has going for it. There’s not much there at the moment, to be honest, but to tie in with this there’s another multiplayer focused trailer (posted below) that talks up the features of the suit in the online game. There’s lots of detail on the specialisations for the suit, which is the game’s take on unlocks, but the sheer range of enhancement modules detailed in this trailer is surprising, and made me raise my eyebrows and say “that’s surprising.” There’s also lots of footage of combat, and I think this is best look at the maps we’ve had so far. So go take a look at the trailer, and listen to the pleased-sounding salesman voice explaining to you why there are so many cupholders in that new nanosuit you just bought into.

Thanks to Blues for the video link, and also for the news that Crysis 2 will have dedicated servers. Because those lazy, feckless undedicated servers were no use to anyone.

Wot I Think: Atom Zombie Smasher

By Alec Meer on February 10th, 2011.

Released a couple of weeks ago and picking up a good buzz amongst People Who Know, Blendo’s Atom Zombie Smasher is a high-speed kinda-strategy game about the end of the world, and one government’s attempt to stop it. You’re the government. Stop it. I’m the games reviewer. Here’s what I think.

I didn’t smash anywhere near as many zombies as one might have expected. This is because a) Atom Zombie Smasher is hard and b) ‘avoiding’ is a whole lot more important than ‘smashing’, it transpires. This is not, at heart, a game about killing – it is a game about helping people to run away as efficiently as possible.

Hands On With Total War: Shogun 2

By Jim Rossignol on February 10th, 2011.

It’s true, I’ve been playing a build of Shogun 2. That build includes the extensive tutorials – covering a slice of the campaign map, naval battles – and a historical manfight, the Battle Of Sekigahara. Find out how I got on below.

Section 8: Sprinting, Violence, Architecture

By Jim Rossignol on February 10th, 2011.

That’s what’s in this new bit of Section 8: Prejudice footage (below) release by Timegate. It’s the map that I played the new co-op mode on in the hands-on event the other week. It’s a series of raise platforms and bunkers around a central hub, and under huge rock arches, which you plummet down between when you are entering the map. It’s quite the thing. This footage gives you a good idea of the general motoring-about that you do in battle, as well getting across the feel of the combat a bit better than previous trailers. Go take a look.

Funny Never Sleeps: American Dream

By Quintin Smith on February 10th, 2011.

Gaze upon my bone shrine to Father Dollar.

American Dream is a collaborative browser game from Increpare, VVVVVV’s Terry Cavanagh, Jasper Byrne and Tom Morgan-Jones that’s made me laugh more than enough to warrant a post. It’s a bit like Oliver Stone’s Wall Street directed by a wet pocket calculator. Set in the 80s, it tasks you with fulfilling the American dream by making a million dollars, though according to Terry it started its life as a game called Killing Spree about “an assassin who spent all his money on designer furniture”. Go play! It’s exactly the kind of oddball thing that I play then can’t help but wonder how it would have turned out with an actual budget.

Rips & Tears In Rain: Bulletstorm Hands On

By Quintin Smith on February 10th, 2011.

The sexual violence is happening just off-camera, I think.

Following the recent wash of ingenious marketing and controversy it’s a little tricky to remember that Bulletstorm is simply an FPS from the Painkiller developers, coming out in less than 2 weeks. Will it be any good? At EA’s invitation I sat down for a lengthy hands-on. That’s the perfect set-up for a dick joke, by the way. My restraint knows no bounds.

Meet The Natural Selection 2 Team

By Jim Rossignol on February 10th, 2011.

There should be an evolution gun. No wait, that is all guns
Unknown Worlds superfan channel Natural Selection 2 HD has been charting the progress of the FPS/RTS hybrid with meticulous detail over the past few months, and most recently the man behind it made a trip to the California-based studio to meet the team and find out some more about the team and the game. I’ve posted the “meet the team” video below, for your viewing pleasure.

Natural Selection 2‘s pre-orders have apparently doine a huge amount to get the game to the “next stage” and the ongoing beta is yielding significant results for the team. We hope to have own interview with Unknown Worlds, as well as a hands-on with the game, pretty soon.

Overture: Clint Mansell To Score Mass Effect 3

By John Walker on February 10th, 2011.

Nuuuuurrrrrrrrrrr, nurrrrrrrrrrrrrr, nurrrrrrrrrrrrr, dunna, nurrrrrrrrrrrrr, DUNNA DUNNA DUNNA, nurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. That's my prediction.

Gosh, I do love Clint Mansell’s scores. Especially the soundtrack he put together for Moon. Although you used to have to be careful when listening to it on Spotify, as it would play through into the Fountain’s equally splendid OST, but then into DOOM’s. And you’d realise what you were listening to and feel ridiculous. Anyway, they’ve rejigged all that now, so it’s safe. Oh yes, I had a reason for mentioning this. He’s creating the soundtrack for Mass Effect 3! Which is really, truly splendid news. Most famous for his work on Aronofsky’s films, his orchestrally ambient pieces are capable of subtly finding their way into Trent Reznor territory, and should make a fine background for space action roleplaying. What excellent news. (Via Eurogamer)
