How CCP Are Inspired By Iceland

A man being inspired by Iceland LIVE!

Monday mornings are for posting nine-month-old videos that most people haven’t seen before but for which one person will loudly point out that he knew about it aaaaaages ago. This time it’s a fantastic interview with a few members of the team at CCP, talking about how Eve Online is inspired by Iceland – the country in which the company began. The similarities drawn between Iceland’s extraordinary and dangerous scenery, and Eve’s stretches of space, are very interesting. It left me wondering how many other developers can speak so eloquently about their geographical inspirations, and determined to find out the next time I interview anyone. This is part of a series of videos created by the Icelandic tourist board – Inspired By Iceland – to promote their phenomenally expensive/beautiful country to the rest of the jealous world. A campaign which also includes excellent dancing, so that’s below too.

Also Icelandic accents are best. Here’s someone singing in one, while people dance. I cannot connect this to videogames. (Be warned, it does contain a slightly nude lady and man):

Isn’t Iceland one of those countries where everyone commits suicide becauses there’s no (or very little) Sun for chunks of the year?

    • Crimsoneer says:

Amazing country. Main industries are fish, geothermal energy, and CCP. There are more players in EVE than the population of Iceland, and it was annexed by the US during WWII, just because it was in the way. Incredibly weird, but amazing :P

    • SuperNashwanPower says:

They have awesome ice monster trucks which cheer everyone up, so no suicide. Also they cuddle a lot.

    • Garmr says:

Yes we cuddle of lot in our giant igloos to keep warm, and our main food source are the giant monster ice truck which we also hunt for pleasure.

We were never annexed by the US, it was a military occupation which we didn’t care diddly squat about, as they replaced the British army, and after they left they kept operating a base here in return for financial aid that revitalized the economy here.

Hitler had strategic interest in Iceland and apparently had actual plans to invade, but didn’t because of the occupation here.

The suicide rate isn’t exceptionally high or anything, though people here chunks down happy pills like they are getting paid for it, probably has to do something with those long winter nights

    • Moni says:

Wikipedia says no, the rate is more or less the same as the US.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate

You’re probably thinking of Greenland, but, from what I’ve read, the long nights suicide theory doesn’t make sense, since it’s a fairly recent phenomena.

    • kyrieee says:

The long nights might not lead to suicide, but they really wear on you.

    • ManiO says:

As has been stated the suicide rate here is pretty average. But personally I find the summers harder since I hardly sleep due to constant sunlight.

    • mandrill says:

Apparently Iceland is the happiest nation on Earth: Linky. and having lived here for the best part of the last two years I can quite believe it.

    • darthmajor says:

“There are more players in EVE than the population of Iceland, and it was annexed by the US during WWII, just because it was in the way. ”

This never happened, the nullsec alliances would never stand for it and would go to war against the US.

For what it’s worth, the space battles in GSB are inspired by my struggle to get planning permission from the council.

    • Kerbobotat says:

Do you mean you spend ungoldy amoutns of time preparing and planning and developing strategies, and then watch as they hoplessly crumble around you?

      Fucking planning permission.

  3. SuperNashwanPower says:

“I think how eve is constantly bringing out new patches is not unlike volcanos bringing out lava”. OK this is the point where he might be reaching a little. The woman from the Icelandic Tourism Bureau is just out of shot, with a sack of money, biting her nails and wondering how far to push it before it becomes embarassingly obvious…. I mean look, the guy is trying not to laugh. What a tinker.

    • mlaskus says:

Yeah, that first guy was not very convincing. The second one was way better, with an interesting observation about lack of scale there.

  4. Atic Atac says:

I am from Iceland. True story

  5. Gap Gen says:

I guess now is a good a time as any to sample the “expensive” country, given how their economy died a few years back and apparently the currency is worth shit.

  6. Stijn says:

That second video might be the first “LOOK! OUR COUNTRY IS AWESOME!” clip that ever worked for me.

    • BAReFOOt says:

Sorry, but freezing dark rocks never will do it for me, when I can have coral reef atolls, or even just look down into a summery Swiss valley.

No sun? Not a chance then!

  7. Jonathan says:

They tripped over that dog! That’s not very nice. He should bite them.

  8. Njordsk says:

    Yay northern countries.

  9. Tei says:

Looks good, but is not Japan. Japan by now would have made a 1:1 scale version of one of the Titans.
Is hard to be a awesome country, wen you have countries like Japan, Brazil, Germany, UK, Ukrania, Italia,… Is like theres a international competition to be the most awesome country, and the top 6 countries are always the same.
Maybe the iceland military can conquer the north pole. And claim ownership of all the sweet water there. Some arguee that after oil, sweet water will be the new oil. You can live 25 days withouth eating anything, but you will not last that long withouth drinking.
“We own all the potable water and a enormeous reserve of Deuterium, bitches”.
Also, with clean water comes things like Chips factories. Chips need to use clean water.

    • Gap Gen says:

Hang on, Iceland military? Is there something you know that we don’t?

  10. apricotsoup says:

Also yay for Emiliana Torrini (music from the 2nd vid)

    • RagingLion says:

      What I was thinking :)

Also, the last guy from the first video was very convincing and interesting and seemed to be genuinely inspired by Iceland.

  11. scienceshoew says:

Should really be “until recently phenomenally expensive”.

  12. Scatterbrainpaul says:

Would you feel safer in a country with a high suicide rate or a high murder rate?

Also, has anyone seen the Sigur Ros DVD Heima? It really sums up Iceland well

  13. Nick says:

They are going to start selling prawn spoons in EVE?

  14. RCGT says:

So this is why EVE is so broken… harks back to the broken ice floes that ancient Icelanders used to get rid of the old people.

    /oblig.

Hilmar (the first guy) is actually pretty competent, though he comes off poorly in that video. Better than 80% of the management at CCP, anyway.

  15. ubbermuffin says:

    Iceland FTW!

  16. bill says:

That song is awesome. I’ve discovered a cool new artist. But it’s been stuck in my head ever since i watched that video yesterday.
Also, turns out she did Gollum’s Song – i always thought that was Bjorck.
