Lego Star Wars III Clones Tomorrow

By John Walker on March 21st, 2011.

Why can't Lego just learn to get along?

Lego Star Wars III comes out, and I’m very happy about that. Except only in America, because it takes ages for the internet to travel to Europe, and I’m not happy about that. I do hope it’s good. And funny. Those are my informed, journalistic opinions about this matter. Below are the latest collection of cinematic trailers to accompany it. I am being efficient.

Confirmed: Hitman 5 Includes Hands, Towers

By Alec Meer on March 21st, 2011.

C'mon, it's no less dumb than a barcode

And so begins the long, long road to actual information. Game marketing in the second decade of the 21st century is all about the drawn-out tease – we already knew Hitman 5 was in on the act due to news of an apparent alternate reality game associated with sharp-suited baldieman Agent 47, and now we have the results of said ARG. Screenshots! Screenshots of gloves!

PCs Are 10x More Powerful Than Consoles

By John Walker on March 21st, 2011.

You naughty little bugger

Much like I am ten times more powerful than Quintin, the PC is ten times more powerful than the consoles, according to AMD spokesman Richard Huddy. Which leaves him, and us, wondering why the PC version of games often feels more hobbled than bounding ahead. In fact, in some ways the PC is running at a tenth of the ability of consoles. He told Bit-Tech,

“To a significant extent that’s because, one way or another and for good reasons and bad – mostly good – DirectX is getting in the way.”

Take It For A Spin: Spiral Knights

By Quintin Smith on March 21st, 2011.

You can tell they made Puzzle Pirates, can't you? Very camp.

Ooh, Spiral Knights is pretty good. It’s the upcoming free-to-play hack’n'slash MMOG from Three Rings, developers of the now-ancient Puzzle Pirates (and also currently working on the Doctor Who online game). No release date on Spiral Knights yet Spiral Knights will be out on April 4th, and the preview build just devoured a not-insignificant chunk of my afternoon without a care in the world. “How rude!” I cried, as I gunned another fox to death with a cool series of clicks. Trailer and thoughts after the jump.

Wot I Think: Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood

By Alec Meer on March 21st, 2011.

I only killed them because the pigeon told me to

Ubisoft’s third Assassin’s Creed game arrived on PC on Friday – some four months later than the console version. I poured some time in the Xbox 360 (hissssss) edition late last year, and I’ve now spent the last week or so with the PC one. Too little too late, or about damned time? Or a bit of both? Here’s my verdict.

The game that’s least like the Assassin’s Creed concept turns out to be the best use of the concept yet. Oh look, a conclusion in the very first line. I’ve ballsed this one right up, eh? Perhaps; but I’m aware there are preconceptions to be got past here.

Spotlight On Biscuit- Section 8: Prejudice

By Quintin Smith on March 21st, 2011.

Have you noticed that the alt-text on every photoshopped image is us complaining about how long it took us?

As nice as it would be to say that Rock, Paper, Shotgun is the only source of cynical, British, top-quality PC gaming journalism on the internet, we cannot, as that would involve ignoring internet phenomenon (and regular RPS commenter) Cynical Brit (aka Total Biscuit). His videos and shoutcasts routinely reach an audience of hundreds of thousands, the bastard. What to do about this? After months of plotting we calculated that bringing about his death would be unfeasibly expensive, and so we have organised a tentative alliance.

Today we present to you the first Spotlight On Biscuit, a weekly feature in which we’ll highlight the best of Total Biscuit’s videos for that week, and also spotlight an actual biscuit, just to make sure nobody reads the headline and goes home disappointed. Today we’ve got TB explaining “WTF Is…” Section 8: Prejudice, and a look at that firm favourite, the Ginger Crunch Cream.

Return of the Not-Mac: MS’s PC Game Future

By Alec Meer on March 21st, 2011.

Why is the A in Are capitalised? It really bothers me

Much has been said, over the years, about how Microsoft plans to return to its home platform: the PC. While the fact it doesn’t own/control PCs as it does its Xboxes means it will never truly focus its game efforts this way, it seems reluctant to ever admit that. The last few years have seen several attempts to slip a pair of handcuffs around the PC’s ever-changing wrists in the form of the remarkably unlovely Games For Windows Live, but a ‘leaked’ internal video demonstrates that a new plan on the horizon.

The interest no longer seems to lie in dictating multiplayer and achievements, but instead on a newer type of PC gamer and on something called the Windows Gaming eXperience…

Jamestown: Legend Of The Lost Colony

By Quintin Smith on March 21st, 2011.

Don't stop firing until you see the whites of the high score screen, lads!

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Jamestown, the upcoming indie co-op bullet hell shooter from Final Form games, has both the best setting and the best catchphrase ever. The setting: a 17th century British colonial Mars. As in, the planet Mars. The catchphrase: “Mars is waiting! Bring your friends!”

I think I’m in love. Check out the trailer after the jump, and many thanks to RPS reader Jim “The Last Biceps” Crawford for sending this in.

How CCP Are Inspired By Iceland

By John Walker on March 21st, 2011.

A man being inspired by Iceland LIVE!

Monday mornings are for posting nine-month-old videos that most people haven’t seen before but for which one person will loudly point out that he knew about it aaaaaages ago. This time it’s a fantastic interview with a few members of the team at CCP, talking about how Eve Online is inspired by Iceland – the country in which the company began. The similarities drawn between Iceland’s extraordinary and dangerous scenery, and Eve’s stretches of space, are very interesting. It left me wondering how many other developers can speak so eloquently about their geographical inspirations, and determined to find out the next time I interview anyone. This is part of a series of videos created by the Icelandic tourist board – Inspired By Iceland – to promote their phenomenally expensive/beautiful country to the rest of the jealous world. A campaign which also includes excellent dancing, so that’s below too.

Wastedland: The Axed Fallout Movie

By Alec Meer on March 21st, 2011.

Not in the pitch: this guy. Or indeed any power armour

Times were an awful lot easier for Interplay back in 1998. A string of hit franchises, apparent sovereignty of the new RPG kingdom and, it appears, big, brassy enough cajones to start up a film division. While nothing much ever came of this, we now know that a Fallout movie was in the works, based on the first game. Whatever would it have been like? Let’s find out.

Red Eclipse, An Open Source FPS

By Jim Rossignol on March 20th, 2011.

Zap, boom, and all those noises.
Ooh, I do like a bit of fast-paced FPS, like they don’t make anymore. And here’s v1.0 of Red Eclipse, which is an open-source project along those lines. I’ve not had a chance to take a look at it yet, but the trailer (below) shows the kind of action that I tend to get a kick out of – dudes bouncing about and running along walls, and all that jazz. The game is based on the Cube Engine, which has some games of its own going at that link.

All of which reminds me – sorry guys – that I really want to get back into Quake III…
