Class War: Brink Shows Off Its ManTypes

By Jim Rossignol on March 15th, 2011.

We’ve only got to wait to May 20th before we can all pile onto the Brink servers and run around pretending to be peculiarly proportioned men. I can’t wait! There’s a video out that explains the abilities and missions that some of these men will face in the moments between shooting each other. These subdivisions of shootermen will be called “classes”, each with its own skills and things. Clever, I know.

And – my goodness – it’s looking good. Go take a look, below.

So The Arkham City Trailer Is Spectacular

By Jim Rossignol on March 15th, 2011.

This made a wobbly appearance a bit earlier today, but I didn’t post it up because the embed had audio problems. Seems to be all fixed now, and the new trailer for Arkham City is quite the thing, with all the big villains showing their meticulously-modelled faces, to a fancy soundtrack. There is also swooping, and some mild face-punching. Don’t be alarmed, that’s quite normal. Better: the glimpses we get of the city itself! That sure looks like the kind of place I would like to defeat muscular men in hand-to-hand combat, yes sir!

Also, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that Batman is just a man. And finally, that the game is out in the week of the 18th of October. What a week that will be.

Forbidden: Drakensang: River Of Time

By Jim Rossignol on March 15th, 2011.

Pretty!
Germanic RPG Drakensang – which we last spoke about just here – has a prequel, River Of Time, but it’s not available in the UK, so I can’t (easily) play it. That makes me sad. Why would I want to play it? Well, because plenty of people are beginning to point out that it’s a pretty, full-blown, and mechanistically interesting RPG that has released at just $20. Sure, it might sit well into the hard betrodden realm of fantasy RPG standards, but I fear no dwarf-quest – why wouldn’t I want to take a look?

So anyway, I suppose I will throw this one out to the comments? Is River Of Time any good, Internet? I believe Americans and Europeans can get it on Steam? Is anyone playing it?

The Cult of Minecraft: Chain World

By Alec Meer on March 15th, 2011.

There isn't a rule about not trashing absolutely everything, I notice. Uh-oh

You could play Minecraft right now, very, very easily. What you couldn’t play at all easily is a very special – unique, even – version of Minecraft known as Chain World. A game you could, even if you had the chance, play only once. A game only a very few people will ever play, and a game no-one who hasn’t played it will ever be told the details of.

You can know of it, but you will probably never know it.

BioWhere? EA Working On Fixing Game Bans

By John Walker on March 15th, 2011.

You'd think I'd take the time to improve this.

So what is the latest word on EA and BioWare banning users from games? You may remember that on Friday, the now-famous Arno found he was unable to access his copy of Dragon Age II because he made a rude-ish comment on the BioWare forums. This saw a 72 hour forum ban, which, it seemed, also froze his EA account, which meant he could not authenticate his copy of DA2, and nor could he play other EA games tied into the account. It was highlighted on a few sites, and we spoke to Arno himself to get his side of the story. Later that day Arno received a personal email from the Senior Director of Customer Services himself, Boyd Beasley, explaining that this had been an error, with accompanying profuse apologies. Since we wrote the story we’ve heard about the same happening to other gamers, as long ago as a year back, and indeed it happened again to someone else over the weekend. Asking EA about this, they’ve given us a statement explaining that this continues to be a fault, and they’re working on fixing it by the end of the week. But we’re left with some questions.

Shogun 2 Is Out Today, You Know

By Jim Rossignol on March 15th, 2011.

Ooh, someone is in trouble.
If you wanted to read a considered opinion on Total War: Shogun 2‘s single-player, followed by a throughful discussion by RPS readers, then you could read this. But I suppose the question now is: how good is their revamped and revised multiplayer offering? And I ask you: is anyone looking forward to that more than the single-player? Or is this one of those games where multi-player will be forever secondary? Questions!

Ultima’s Lord British Returns, Without Ultima

By Alec Meer on March 15th, 2011.

He doesn't look like this now. I'm not going to say what the main difference is. That would be very rude.

You can take the Lord British out of Ultima, but you can’t take the Ultima out of Lord British. Does that make sense? Probably not, but it sounded good, which is essentially the story of my career.

EA still jealously guards the Ultima license, despite not doing a whole lot with it outside of an only tangentially related free to play strategy game. However, it appears Ultima creator Richard Garriot has managed to personally retain the rights to sometime alter-ago and in-game ruler Lord British, which he now intends to use as the cornerstone of a new online game. “Lord British’s New Britannia” awaits…

ERRORZ AGAINZ! RPS Still Needs Your 503

By John Walker on March 15th, 2011.

The internet.

Last week we asked you to create us a new 503 page for those oh-so rare moments when our site can’t find its way onto the internet. We had some lovely entries, our favourites of which are below. But at the bottom you’ll not find a winner. Because as much as we’ve loved what’s come in, for various reasons we’ve not yet received one we want to/can use. So look below, be inspired, and follow the rules detailed here and here. If you’re one of the entries below, please resubmit. It’s open again until midnight this Friday. Send them to compo@rockpapershotgun.com. And let me stress again, for goodness sake: No. Copyrighted. Images.

Update: Prey 2: Not Id Tech 5: Has A Hat: OK?

By Alec Meer on March 15th, 2011.

And they say John is the best investigative journo on RPS

Contrary to the entire games press’ presumption yesterday, semi-unexpected sequel Prey 2 is not going to use the very shiniest, newest version of id Software’s graphics engine, id Tech 5, after all. Bethesda’s Pete Hines waggled his finger at IGN to correct the misconception, claiming that Prey 2′s been on the drawing board for so long that id Tech 5 essentially turned up too late.

Also below: your first-ever image of Human Head’s sci-fi shooter reboot. It features a man with guns. And a hat. Waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Say “Apple”: The First 8 Mins Of Portal 2

By Alec Meer on March 15th, 2011.

Wheatley will turn out to be evil, right? I mean look at him there - clearly thinking about lasering my eyeballs to death

Snuck out of the recent Coin Gallery Conference is some impressively stable but somewhat muffled weakman footage of Portal 2 – eight minutes of agreeably mirthsome material from famous persons Stephen Merchant and the newly-announced JK Simmons. It’s on the very mildly spoilery side, so look away now if you don’t want to know about how Chell ends up snogging Gordon Freeman in the second level.

Oh lord, what have I done!

Prototype 2 Isn’t Out Until 2012

By Jim Rossignol on March 15th, 2011.

That sinking feeling.
But that isn’t stopping Radical from releasing comedy death trailers like the one I’ve posted below. Again, it doesn’t show much more than a brief clip of the game, but at least it’s slowed down so that you can enjoy the passing scenery as a random dude is tumbled to his explosive end. (Via Blues.)
