It’s Real Time: CryEngine 3′s Real-Time Tools

By John Walker on March 7th, 2011.

Trees. Treeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees.

Here’s something excellent that we missed last week. Along with Epic showing off the new Unreal improvements, Crytek had a remarkable tech demo for the latest features in CryEngine 3. It’s mystifying. I’m currently contacting alien lifeforms to arrange the delivery of my next PC from the future to make sure I’ll be taking full advantage of it. Those trees!

Wet Dream: Steam Releases Dreamcast Pack

By Quintin Smith on March 7th, 2011.

In my dreams, these are the four figures present at my funeral.

Oh, this is hot stuff! Couldn’t be hotter. Kieron sends words that Steam is now selling noteworthy Dreamcast titles Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure DX, Sega Bass Fishing and (here we go!) the inestimable, irrepressible Space Channel 5: Part 2 for £5.99 each, or £19.99 for the lot. Gamersgate has exactly the same deal, as it happens. Why should you be interested in taxis, fishes, Sonic the Hedgehog and… space channels? Careful, now. Those are poison thoughts you’re having. You’ll find precisely why you need each of these games after the jump.

A Sword of the Stars II Video For You

By Jim Rossignol on March 7th, 2011.

No, really, it’s for you, Steve. The rest you guys can watch it to, I suppose. In it developers Kerberos talk a bit about what they’re up to with Sword of the Stars II: a dark force returning to the universe, giant spacecraft raking each other with giant beam-weapons, a complex and story-driven 4X game, an empire-driven hierarchies and organisation, complex diplomacy, and so on. Interestingly, lead designer Martin Cirulis suggests that the game will essentially start you “mid-game”, in that you won’t be building up the races from scratch to fight the big bad, you’ll already be well developed, and taking it from there.

Watch Eurogamer’s GDC After Dusk

By Jim Rossignol on March 7th, 2011.

I mean, if you haven’t already. Our fine chums over at Eurogamer only went and produced a bunch of scintillating video coverage of GDC, complete with appearances from a selection of gaming royalty. The full round of up episodes is here. “Guests will include the artist formerly known as Cliffy B, Frontier’s David Braben and Peter “You never know, he might accidentally announce his new game” Molyneux.* Not to mention Ron Gilbert of Monkey Island fame, Minecraft creator Markus Persson and several more.” That line up talk games, and pretty much underline why GDC is such an important conference, each and every year. Worth a look.

Gaming Made Me: Quake

By Lewis Denby on March 6th, 2011.

Come on in, children. You'll make friends.

This week, in our Gaming Made Me series, Lewis Denby explains to us how it was that Quake came to make him. In a very personal account, find out how violent videogaming took away a child’s loneliness, and even got him to go to school.

The Sunday Papers

By Kieron Gillen on March 6th, 2011.

Delightful Fiance says YOU BETTER NOT BE DOING THIS NEXT WEEK.

Don’t call it a comeback. Please don’t. Basically, Jim’s Sunday Papering has been scuppered by the fact someone’s apparently stole his laptop. Some people really need drills in their eyes, eh? Which leaves me to dust off the old WordPress login and compile a list of the fine (mostly) games related reading from across the week, while trying to link to some Jim-esque ambient noise rather than some girls singing in half-harmony about fanzines and blu-tack. Go!

ERRORZ! Compo: RPS Needs Your 503

By John Walker on March 6th, 2011.

Positive Internet hard at work.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun is currently working on making some hefty server-side improvements to ensure that the site is as stable as possible. The great news is that any wobbles we’ve experienced lately have been because there are more people reading the site than ever before, pushing our tech to limits it hadn’t previously faced. So we’re in the process of upgrading everything that can be upgraded, and wrapping rolls of parcel tape around everything that can’t. And none of this, not a plip, would be possible without the extraordinary work of Positive Internet. They never, ever ask us to plug them on the site, despite constantly going beyond the call of duty for us. But plug them we will. Using any other company for hosting is just silly.

With this in mind, we’ve decided it would be a good idea to have a competition to design our new error page. Create us our 503 page, and the prize will be to hopefully never get to see it on the site. Read on for more details.

Bounty Stumper: Lego Star Wars III Trailer

By John Walker on March 5th, 2011.

My Lego figures never had guns like that.

Hoo hoo hoo, I can’t wait for Lego Star Wars III (warning: hideous, annoying website). Despite the quite remarkably boring opening to the 360 demo that I didn’t bother playing past. Also, hello former writer for PC Gamer who makes the Lego Star Wars games – how about a PC demo? Eh? Anyway, there’s a new CGI trailer/cutscene for it out of GDC and it made me laugh. Hence: post.

(N)Ornate: Guild Wars 2 GDC Video Blowout

By Quintin Smith on March 4th, 2011.

Holy cow, I forgot that women have breasts for a second there!

And now, presenting a full half-hour of Guild Wars 2 footage, covering everything to Norn character creation to Guardian and Thief game footage! You know what looks great? I’ll tell you. This game looks great. The last time RPS played an MMO together way probably City of Heroes, an event that’s now firmly entrenched in my mind because of Kieron’s story about that very summer. Allow me to recount it for you.
