Planet-Busting: The Future of EVE

By Alec Meer on March 28th, 2011.

Like Galactus, but less pink

We have all manner of crazed reportage on the recent EVE fan-fest due from the boy Smith throughout this week, but while we wait for him to purge all those mysterious Icelandic alcohols from his system, let’s take a look at CCP’s video vision of their MMO’s not-too-distant future…

Super Clunky Ball: Rock Of Ages Videos

By John Walker on March 28th, 2011.

Imagine what this team's office must look like.

It really is about time we caught up on Rock Of Ages trailers, don’t you think. The next game from the mad geniuses behind Zeno Clash, ACE Team, is a combination of tower defence and Marble Madness, because that’s the way those people think. And there’s lots of bits of the Pythonesque madness to look at below, including a ten minute walkthrough of how it all works.

The Sunday Papers

By Jim Rossignol on March 27th, 2011.

Sundays are for remembering why it is that you got into that writing lark in the first place. It was because you didn’t want to have a proper job. Now you haven’t got one, you are able to wake up on a Sunday and realise it’s time to work. Hmm, that doesn’t seem right. Anyway, let’s take a look at some of the literature generated by the tiny robots of our collective consciousness.

  • Sitting in the vein of our own Gaming Made Me articles, Gamasutra has an article by Mathew Stone entitled “Games that made Me want to be a Better Person: Planescape: Torment.” Here’s a sample: “A complicated relationship that grows into a genuine friendship over the course of the game. The character that I thought was going to be nothing but sex jokes ended up moving me at my very core. It hit me full-force, like a knife in the gut when he explained himself. It felt like a real moment of togetherness when we had that conversation. It trumps every line of dialogue I saw while playing Mass Effect or Dragon Age.”

Wot I Think: Lego Star Wars: The Clone Wars

By John Walker on March 26th, 2011.

Yes, I fancy them.

The latest Traveller’s Tales Lego game, Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars, came out yesterday. I’ve played the Story Mode through to completion, and fought against replaying the entire thing in Free Play in order to have time to write this review. Is it any good? Well, I’ve sort of given that away. Yes, it’s extremely good. Here’s Wot I Think to prove why.

Wot I Think: Crysis 2

By Jim Rossignol on March 26th, 2011.

Some kind of metaphor.
Crysis 2 is now available in both Europe and North America. The sequel to the Crytek’s PC-only 2007 technology showcase FPS, Crysis, it’s one of the most intensely anticipated games of 2011. And it’s now multi-platform, too. What does that all mean for us?

Well, it’s a given that many computer dudes will get shot, but just how good is the shooting? And should this sparkling sci-fi spectacle be sat at the top of your shopping list? (Probably.) Here’s Wot I Think.

Weather Warcast: Elements Of War Gone Gold

By John Walker on March 25th, 2011.

I knew the weather was up to something.

Elements Of War, which we briefly mentioned last year, has gone gold and gained a release date. April 12th in the States, and then silence. But still nothing so grown up as a website. Apparently wanting to know the relationship status of other games, however, it does have a Facebook page. (Come on folks, this isn’t professional.) The game sounds intriguing – it’s an RTS in which you wage war with weaponised weather. Or “WWWWW” as I call it.

Shift 2 Unleashed Has Cars Wot Go Fast

By Jim Rossignol on March 25th, 2011.

These cars are so close because they actually fancy each other, but will never admit it.
Shift 2 Unleashed is one handsome-lookin’ racing game, yes sir! And it’s out next week in the US and, er, now in Europe, I think. Oh no, that’s next week too. My mistake. Anyway, we’ll let you know our thoughts on the game fairly soon, and until then you might want to whet your appetite on the launch trailer. There is tasteless rock music and a car that didn’t make it. I’m sorry. It was just his time.

A Documentary About British Game Dev

By Jim Rossignol on March 25th, 2011.

I remember television! So quaint.
I’ve often idly remarked that it’d be lovely (by way of fascinating) if someone made a documentary, or a even documentary series, about some of the more unusual aspects of British game development. Headlight Pictures have gone and done precisely that. Crunchtime, a three-part series which which will first air on Sunday 27th, at 7:25am, on Channel 4, examines the Dare To Be Digital competition run by the University of Abertay, Dundee. It continues across two more weekends, detailing the various dramas which face the student teams in their quest to develop splendid videogames. It ends, of course, in actual crunchtime.

Obviously this’ll turn up in 4oD later on, too, but people tuning in will definitely help future game documentary exploits! Logo image thanks to Craig Hastings / Headlight Pictures.

Also: Pirates Of The Black Cove Revealed!

By Jim Rossignol on March 25th, 2011.

I dunno who this dude is, but I like the seagull.
Please raise a foaming mug of pirate-clichés to a moderately bizarre trailer from Nitro Games (below), which introduces their “work in progress” look at Pirates Of The Black Cove. This Pirates! type adventure on the high seas genuinely looks like it could provided plenty of light-hearted fun. In this footage get to take a look at some of the city building, the gang battles, and of course the ships shooting each other. There are also Monster Trucks, for some reason. I actually saw the game a couple of weeks ago and it looks pretty promising – various quests making up a kind of multi-faceted Diablo-esque pirates world. It’s not been in development that long, but Nitro seemed to think it wouldn’t be that far off, either, and since the closed beta is in motion, I’d expect it within a couple of months. Go take a look at the footage!

EA Dares To Question Holiness Of Old Games

By John Walker on March 25th, 2011.

YES I HATED IT.

CVG have an interesting story from EA’s games chief, Frank Gibeau, discussing their history of games and the potential for reviving old IPs. It’s interesting because it’s Gibeau who points out that some of those classic games we all remember loving, well, he says, they might not actually be that good. Dare you admit the same?
