Norman Conquest: A Combat Mission AAR

By Tim Stone on March 25th, 2011.

This way to victory

Hampshire – well, my little corner of it – is all fire and brimstones at present. A Spring-enthused Mother Nature is providing the Brimstones. A preview build of Battlefront’s Combat Mission: Battle For Normandy is supplying the fire. Beyond the html hedgerow below, you’ll find a first-hand account of my second brush with this realism-rammed game-o’-war. Fingers-crossed, you’ll also find numerous pictures of kaput Panzers and surrendering Stormtruppen. Read the rest of this entry »

Dragon Age Writer On Characters’ Bisexuality

By John Walker on March 25th, 2011.

OOOOH! THEY'RE TOTALLY GONNA DO IT!

A peculiar accusation was made against Dragon Age II on the BioWare forums, in which a user accused the game of not properly catering for the straight male gamer. Honestly, I’d launched into writing this with the intention of factually reporting it, but just typing those words has made me want to start throwing chairs. What? Good grief, even if that were true, which it so spectacularly isn’t, wouldn’t it… but… good grief. Amazingly, one of BioWare’s writers, David Gaider, gave a calm, level-headed response where I would have said capital swears. He makes some interesting comments, as EG point out.

Sanctum Is A FPSTD, Has Beta

By Jim Rossignol on March 25th, 2011.

FPS Plants Vs Zombies should be next
That’s first-person shooter tower defence, of course. Sanctum, a UDK-powered project that we reported on some time ago, is now fully evolved up into a commercial project and has a pre-order-based beta going up on Steam. Want to know a bit more? Well, there’s a detailed video below, which explains how you set up your game in a classic tower-defence building phase before taking on the creeps with both the tower network you’ve created, and your own weapons. Looks interesting, and the art style is neat, too. The full game hits on April 15th.

Dungeon Siege 3 Redresses Huge Imbalance

By Quintin Smith on March 24th, 2011.

It'll turn out that that's a walking stick and I'll have been sooo insensitive

That’s right! Because the latest trailer for Dungeon Siege 3 introduces both a sexy lady and guns to the upcoming action RPG in a single playable character, and about time too. I for one have had it with the video game industry neglecting the public’s palpable hunger for both firearms and optimistic takes on the female form. The games industry will never know the loss they suffered when development of my own game, Boobgun, was ended due to financial inconsistencies, but this is at least a step in the right direction. You can watch the trailer right after the jump, and thanks to VG247 for the tipoff. No, really, VG247. I mean it. Thanks.

Solar Powered: Gemini Wars

By Jim Rossignol on March 24th, 2011.

Space: where one can hear ice cream
Stuff is better when it happens in space, I reckon. Good thing for Gemini Wars, then, which is set wholly in that big vacant lot beyond the sky. But what is it? Well, it’s a real-time strategy, like we talked about just yesterday. Developer chap Bruno Cesteiro says: “It’s a mix of Homeworld, Sins of a Solar Empire and Supreme Commander.” So that sounds like something we might want to play until it was way past bedtime, eh? Crikey!

As is traditional, I have posted a trailer below. It’s looking good. The game is out toward the end of 2011, apparently.

Wot I Think: Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime

By Alec Meer on March 24th, 2011.

It's your favourite Ghostbusters characters that you've never heard of!

This top-down arcade shooter came out earlier this week, and is available to buy for a relatively budget price on assorted download services now. Should you cross its stream, or aim for its flat-top? I don’t even know what that means, but look at me, I’m saying lines from a film you’ve seen! That means you will love me. Guh.

Here’s my verdict on Sanctum of Slime. I played it so you didn’t have to.

Not Gary: Numen: Contest Of Heroes

By Jim Rossignol on March 24th, 2011.

Antlers for a hat!
Blame information overload, but I initially passed over Numen: Contest Of Heroes largely on the basis that I assumed that we must have posted about a budget-priced fully-fledged action RPG from an indie studio, because that’s just what we do. Turns out we actually haven’t, and so I am compelled (COMPELLED!) to point you towards this Grecian micro-epic, even though it’s a little wonky. I’ve had a bit of play of the opening part of the game, and I’m both impressed by some of its unique turns (such as the little campsites across the landscape, the selection of a class based on how you play) and disappointed by the clunky UI and dodgy regurgitation of so many grindy RPG mechanisms. Not that it isn’t fun and even fairly pretty in places, but the beating on wolves and spiders that lurk just outside the village gates would make even MMOs from five years ago look a little red in the face. It looks like it escalates rather pleasingly, however, so for that price you’re probably not going to curse it.

Oddly, the developer doesn’t seem to have a link to the demo on their homepage, but it can be found on Steam. So that’s that.

Hunted Exposes Co-op Combat Creativity

By Jim Rossignol on March 24th, 2011.

Arrows aren't best against skeletons, right?
If you want to kill a minotaur then the best way seems to be to get a chum to help you electrocute it. I mean, that’s common knowledge, but the Hunted trailer makes plenty of such things plain in its latest co-operative combat update. This new video features sardonic muscle dude and wry slender elf woman as they make weak quips and work in tandem to cause blood effects to happen. It’s all rather jolly. High-five, handsome fantasy archetypes!

Alpha Squadron: A.R.C. Squadron

By Jim Rossignol on March 24th, 2011.

Flying! Shooting! Together at last!
Here at charming British website Rock, Paper, Shotgun we’re inappropriately fond of both flying/shooting type games and Avatar-style floating islands. So it is with warm pleasure that I note the alpha launch of UDK-powered A.R.C. Squadron. It’s an airborne combat game that looks rather like my fever dreams. See the video below for a taste of that. You can download the client over here. Let’s do that and shoot each other. It’s about 300mb. The server is online at 70.166.15.133

Wot I Think: Bloodline Champions

By Quintin Smith on March 24th, 2011.

Those parachute pants might look like a fashion faux pas, but in his defense you almost certainly can't touch this.

I’ve had my eye on PvP arena battle game Bloodline Champions for months. A new, free-to-play, ultra polished e-sport? Colour me curious. I’ve spent the last week scratching and spitting my way out of noob status towards respectability, and feel as poised to tell you Wot I Think as I ever will be.

Imagine That: Duke Nukem Delayed. Again

By Alec Meer on March 24th, 2011.

raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh

One more delay for the road, huh? Yes, Duke Nukem Forever will not make its promised release date of May 3. Old habits die hard, clearly.

So when, if ever, will this near-mythical manshooter be released instead? I’ll let Randy ‘not Pitchfork’ Pitchford explain all…
