Mod News: Rebuilt

By Lewis Denby on April 13th, 2011.

Exciting times are upon us this week. Below, there’s an absolutely stunning interpretation of the STALKER universe, as built in the Crysis engine. This should happen more often. There’s also some news about a certain mod that rebuilds a certain famous research facility in New Mexico. Whatever could I be talking about? Read on to find out…

10 Reasons You Need To Play Ace Of Spades

By Quintin Smith on April 13th, 2011.

War is tough when all of your recruits are green.

Have I got your attention? Then I’ll begin. Ace of Spades is a freeware, multiplayer Minecraft-alike that takes Minecraft’s cuboid building mechanics and drapes a World War 1 setting on top of it, with the end result being a huge, immersive, dynamic game of capture the flag.

On the one hand, you’ve got two teams of sixteen exchanging rifle fire and grenades, trying to push forward and outflank one another. On the other hand, both teams are trying to improve their position by building bunkers, bridges and tunnels. If you want to give it a shot you’ll find the game here and a guide to playing it here. If not, then I’ve assembled ten reasons why you should reconsider your position after the jump. I want to stand up and high-five RPS reader David Lake for sending this in, but alas, this is the internet. What a shame.

Bombed: SEGA On Streets Of Rage Shutdown

By Jim Rossignol on April 13th, 2011.

Last week SEGA ordered that the Streets Of Rage remake – a faithful fan (reportedly eight years in development) recreation by Bomber Gamers that we previously reported on – be taken down by its creators. Subsequently, SEGA issued this statement:

“SEGA is committed to supporting any fans that take an interest in our games, and where possible we do so by involving them in Beta tests and other development, marketing or research opportunities. However we need to protect our intellectual property rights and this may result in us requesting that our fans remove online imagery, videos or games in some instances.”

Fairly tragic, I think. Is there any good news today?

Avec Sarif: Deus Ex 3 Sarif Industries Video

By Quintin Smith on April 13th, 2011.

It would've been better if he'd turned around and flattened the boy with his throw

PC Gamer’s spotted a new video that’s gone up on the Sarif Industries viral site – Sarif Industries being the body augmentation corporation that employs Adam Jensen, protagonist of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It’s just unexciting enough to make me aware that I’m posting an advert, but what the hell. Speaking of adverts, have you guys seen the Deus Ex 3 ads we’ve got over here in the UK on the Rustlers range of microwaveable burgers and hotdogs? Take a look. Madness.

Imagine That: EA DRM Goes Haywire

By Jim Rossignol on April 13th, 2011.

This ogre is not happy about DRM
So there have been some problems with EA’s DRM for Dragon Age. Ars Technica has a good, angry summary of what has been happening:

Thanks to a combination of DRM idiocy and technical and communications failures on the part of EA and Bioware, I (along with thousands of fellow EA/Bioware customers) spent my free time this past weekend needlessly trapped in troubleshooting hell, in a vain attempt to get my single-player game to load.

I know I’m flogging an offline horse here, but these kinds of stories are just starting to make me miserable. DRM is clearly a waste of our time and publisher’s money. I’m baffled as to why people should pour more resources into this, and still come up with half-arsed server-based solutions that require constant checks and are prone to failure. I know, I know. Empty ranting, pissing into the wind. But something has to change.

Garry’s Mod Outwits Pirates, Bans

By Jim Rossignol on April 13th, 2011.

The pirates were tied to balloons and released into the atmosphere
Unfortunately-named news site Gamepron is reporting that Mr Garry Newman, creator of Garry’s Mod, has gone and done something clever: he introduced an error to his game, an error which only affects pirates. It was a trap! Said pirates even turned up on the G-Mod forums to discuss why their game didn’t work. Reporting the error even revealed their Steam id. Hilarity ensued.

More of this sort of thing, Internet. (Even if it is basically pretty sinister.)

Portal Video Explains Those Metal Leg Things

By Quintin Smith on April 12th, 2011.

goddamnit mike biggs

OK, I seriously have to run out of the door now but can’t do it before posting this. A new Portal 2 video that explains precisely what the shit those metal curves that are strapped to the protagonist’s legs are. Watching this, I let out an “OHHHHHH” of understanding so pronounced that it must have sounded to my neighbours like a moan of pain. Thanks to RPS reader Mike “Last Minute” Biggs for sending this in.

You can do it! Ryu, specifically.

Well, in case you can’t decipher those aconyms in the headline, today Capcom announced that they’re working on PC releases of both the enhanced Arcade Edition of Super Street Fighter IV, boasting four new playable characters (Yun, Yang, Oni and Evil Ryu), some balance changes and an impressive new suite of replay features (including the ability to “follow” the replays posted by any players or friends of your choosing), and Street Fighter X Tekken, due out in 2012. Dead Rising 2: Off The Record Announced

By Quintin Smith on April 12th, 2011.

That reminds me. I must see about the new RPS staff uniforms.

Still furious at Dead Rising 2 standalone episodes Case Zero and Case West not seeing a PC release? Nevermind. Not sure what they are? OK.

Forget all that, because Capcom’s announced something much more significant that will be seeing a PC release. Dead Rising 2: Off The Record is Dead Rising 2 re-imagined with photojournalist Frank West, the protagonist from the first Dead Rising, replacing motocross star Chuck Greene. Sound like a cheap cash-in? You’d be wrong, sir. DEAD wrong. Full features list and debut trailer after the jump.

Apocalypse, Now: Magicka ‘Nam Launches

By Alec Meer on April 12th, 2011.

Only

Paradox have today squeaked out their excellently batshit DLC pack Magicka: Vietnam, which relocates wizardry to misguided war. Not that this is exactly approaching the Vietnam conflict with anything other than farce and satire, but it seems to be saturing its co-op monster-splatting with as much ‘Nam-themed excess as it can conjure up. POW camps, napalm, hueys, Rambo and raaawk all appear, but mostly it’s about making camo-clad goblins die by the dozen. It’s enjoying itself first and foremost, and there are precious few commercial games that can be said of. In what’s now Magicka tradition, the latest trailer is an exercise in explodey absurdity.
