Operation Raccoon City Shots Are Quite Dark

By Quintin Smith on April 12th, 2011.

Bet you thought that girl at the back was a zombie, didn't you? She's not. She just loves jam donuts.

Capcom opened up with a veritable salvo of news not one hour ago, so bear with me while I assemble it all. First up are a collection of new shots for co-op tactics-fest Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. As if those images of the main characters weren’t badass enough, it now turns out that they’re adept at using live zombies as human shields. Leon S. Kennedy never tried that, did he? Nope. What a wuss.

Brink Will Use Steamworks, Specs Detailed

By Quintin Smith on April 12th, 2011.

I want a cop game where an announcer yells 'BRUTALITY', Mortal Combat style

Second Brink post of the day, eh? I bet this takes you to the brink of your patience, or something. Apologies, but ultimately this is all Bethesda’s fault for sending out another press release announcing the minimum and recommended specs of the game and that it’ll use Steamworks. Full thing thing after the jump.

Gothic Will Rise(n) Again

By Alec Meer on April 12th, 2011.

Dancing with joy or shot in the back? You decide

I’ve been travelling for 25 hours, and now I’m in Utah. There’s snow, and buildings made from wood. Why do I tell you this? Because I’m knackered and want to have a little moan. Pity me. Weep for me. Tell me you love me.

Cheery news, however: 1) there’s a big pot of coffee right next to me. 2) Gothic creators Piranha Bytes might be getting their original franchise/universe back, having had to hand over the rights to erstwhile publisher JoWood some time ago.

Humble Frozenbyte Bundle Appears Today

By John Walker on April 12th, 2011.

Fumble

Humble Indie Bundle The Third is due out today. It’s a bit of a different one this time around – after the first and second – only one developer is in the deal: Frozenbyte. It’s a top collection of their games – Trine, Shadowgrounds, Shadowgrounds Survivor, Jack Claw, and Splot – and once again its intended to see money reach charities. What, wait were those last two?

That Sanking Feeling: Sanctum Impressions

By Quintin Smith on April 12th, 2011.

The silverfish infestation at Alec's house was starting to get serious.

First personly shooter / tower defense hybrid Sanctum comes out this Friday. Now, I know what you’re thinking. “FPS and Tower Defense at the same time? What? How?! No!!” Or maybe you’re some cocky cock, and you think you know exactly how it’d work. In which case allow me to tell you that you’re probably wrong!

Tell Us: What’s Your Dream Game?

By John Walker on April 12th, 2011.

Someone should make a game set entirely in a thought bubble.

We work far too hard entertaining you. You do some work for a bit. I want you to describe your dream game. It’s not quite as ambiguous as it sounds.

Patrician IV: Rise Of A Dynasty Released

By Quintin Smith on April 12th, 2011.

Tpwned!

Our sterling coverage of Patrician IV: Risk of a Dynasty continues! Yes, as of today the first expansion pack for Patrician IV has arrived on Steam (or you can get it here on Gamersgate), bringing a load of revisions, six new scenarios and a few new features to the historical trading simulator. With Rise of a Dynasty you’ll be able to trade via roads as well as seas, and buy up parts of entire regions. You greedy bastards! Did you ask for that as a new feature? Yes, you, at the keyboard? No? Fine.

I’ve embedded a Patrician IV tutorial video after the jump, so you can take a look at the game and see if it’s for you.

Plot Holes: Portal Comic Pt. 2 Arrives

By Quintin Smith on April 12th, 2011.

HOW DO ARTISTS DO IT? Witches, the lot of 'em

Valve have released the climactic part two of their free Portal comic, Lab Rat, and while I’m not sure if there’s anything in there that quite tops the art on page 5 it does offer a great conclusion and a juicy scrap of insight into precisely who Portal’s protagonist is. If you’re looking forward to Portal 2′s release date (only one week from now! WHAT?!) you probably owe it to yourself to read this.

Waffle: Games On A Plane

By John Walker on April 12th, 2011.

With jetlag.

‘Waffle’ are occasional columns of meandering thoughts, not intended to make any helpful points.

As the transport industry embarrassingly crawls along behind progress, we’re finally getting close to a place where gaming on the move is viable. It’s insane that what’s been holding us back for so long is basically plug sockets.

Clearly there are many who have been gaming on the move for years. But they’re those who can afford laptops of such epic prices as to make a mortal man cry, with battery lives not even long enough to complete Homefront, twice. Genuine opportunities to conveniently game, on non-bank-destroying machines, while hurtling at impressive speeds, are really only appearing now, I’d suggest. I made that really specific, because there’s no internet access up here on this plane, so I can’t check.

BIFF! Batman: Arkham City Is “Open”

By Jim Rossignol on April 12th, 2011.

Gosh, Batman, this interview about Arkham City makes me a bit more excited about the game. It sounds like Rocksteady aren’t resting on their laurels, and are really reaching with the new game. Speaking about the open nature of the city Rocksteady’s Dax Ginn said: “Everywhere that’s open to the sky is available to the player from the off. So they can go anywhere they want and that was the emotional feeling that we wanted to convey; you’re Batman, you can do what you want… there’s loads of content out there in the streets and you can engage with in any order you want right from the beginning.”

So that sounds interesting.

Battlefront Offer Theatre Of War 3 Demo

By Jim Rossignol on April 12th, 2011.

Tanks: Like forthright sheds.
The simulatory war-men of Battlefront send word that they’ve crafted a Theatre Of War 3 demo for you to download and play on your computer-machine. Excitingly, it’s a time-limited version of the full game, so you can try to win the Korean war in an hour. Now that’s what I call a speed-run. “It allows access to all the missions, features, editors, save games and even multiplayer as the full version. The only restriction is that you are allowed only 60 minutes total gameplay running time before the demo will expire.”

Then, if you like it, you can buy it. Or just say “I like this,” and give a big thumbs up to the empty room in which you sit.
