EDGE-Borg Reveals Max Payne 3 Details

By John Walker on April 4th, 2011.

Tension headache? Try lots of pills at once.

Some decent information is arriving about Max Payne 3, in the wake of some shitty screenshots being released. EDGE magazine have got a giant old feature about it, and through the power of copying out some bits, we can tell you some snippets about the game below. We’d also recommend you rush out and buy a copy of EDGE, as that will assuage our guilt.

Saints Row: The Third Footage, Lay-offs

By John Walker on April 4th, 2011.

Actual screenshot footage

While April 1st saw everyone oh-so hilariously lying about their products to create pointless confusion for gamers, it did also see a rather good sort-of-prank-but-actually-just-a-good-joke-even-if-it-weren’t-International-Lying-Day-and-isn’t-a-lie-either from Volition for Saints Row: The Third. Advertised as the first in-game footage, it’s – well, it’s exactly that. It’s below. There’s also some sadder news.

EG Retro: Legend Of Kyrandia + MAPS!

By John Walker on April 4th, 2011.

Remember when games had graphics, eh?

This weekend saw my Eurogamer retrospective of one of the lesser-remembered adventure games of the early Nineties, the Legend Of Kyrandia: Book One. It contained moments like,

“It contained a single cursor. I’m not really sure what to do with this information. Does it undermine everything? Is everything that’s being produced now a homage to Kyrandia?

Obviously not. And not only because Kyrandia also suffers from the same issues. To say the story owes something to the King’s Quest series is a bit like saying Vodafone owes something to the Inland Revenue. In this fairytale land an evil wizard – brilliantly named Malcolm – is removing all the magic and, er, killing a few trees.”

And rather delightfully, it had me making maps for the first time in years. Below!

Boy Meats World: Super Meat Boy Mega-Patch

By Alec Meer on April 4th, 2011.

I am scared of Super Meat Boy

There are now over 500 levels in bastard-hard platform gem Super Meat Boy. Over 500. This absurd milestone has been reached as a result of a dramatic new update, known in continually Nintendo-prodding fashion as Super Meat World. It’s free, it was added to the game on Saturday, and it consists of a slew of new official levels and even more of a slew of approved third-party levels for the blood-smearing jumpy-runny game.

Spotlight On Biscuit- Crysis 2 Impressions

By Quintin Smith on April 4th, 2011.

Later, the military tribunal would not look kindly on Sgt. Havok's excuse that the Renault Megane meant him harm

It’s a top quality Spotlight on Biscuit we’ve got for you this week. Not only do we have Total Biscuit giving his hugely positive impressions on Crysis 2 single player in a video he’s dubbed “How Being Allowed to Fail is Awesome”, a sentiment very close to the hearts of most everyone here at RPS, but I do some thinking about the mighty Party Ring. Just why is it so popular?

Phew/Boo: Planetside Next Is Alive/Delayed

By Alec Meer on April 4th, 2011.

One day you will drive this tank. One day. But not today.

Bad, sad times hit Sony Online Entertainment last week, with the revelation that the MMO division is closing three studios, laying off a third of its staff and summarily executing planned spy game The Agency. This all sucks – hope everyone affected finds safe harbour very soon.

So what does this mean for the game we’ve waited our whole lives* for, the sequel to massively multiplayer manshoot Planetside?

Root Maneuver: The Potato Sack Bundle

By Quintin Smith on April 4th, 2011.

What are you doing right now? Working? Smiling? Breathing? Well, stop with that nonsense and go straight over to the Steam page for The Potato Sack, a new bundle of indie games offering £108′s worth of great indie games, including Amnesia, Super Meat Boy, Toki Tori (which you can read Kieron shouting about here), The Ball (which Jim and John talk about here) and Defense Grid: The Awakening, for a paltry £27. I’d eagerly pay £30 for those five games alone, and there are another eight in the pack.

While if you already own two or three of these games you might have a tricky decision ahead of you, if you don’t own a single one of them then this is an absolute no-brainer. Buy! Buy it now! There’s even a Team Fortress 2 hat in it for you. And just in case only one or two of the participating games catch your eye, each of them is currently enjoying a 50% off sale. Amazing.

This Volition Documentary Is De(s)cent

By Quintin Smith on April 3rd, 2011.

Willard Christopher Smith, Jr, there. No, really.

Game Informer have put up an hour long documentary on the history of Volition, the US developers that got their start making Descent, and then went on to make Freespace 1 & 2, Red Faction and its sequels, and most recently the Saints Row games. It’s always nice hearing the stories behind big games like those, and Game Informer were smart enough to insert every cringeworthy 90s TV advert for them that they could find. Plus there’s some time spent talking about a cancelled game called Underground, which was going to be a heist game set in London, and you get a Fresh Prince era Will Smith at a games expo talking about how Descent feels just like a movie. Go watch!

The Sunday Papers

By Jim Rossignol on April 3rd, 2011.

The Sunday Papers
Sundays are for rest. Recuperation. On Sunday we feel okay. We will rise again. And when we rise, we will want to read something, cup of tea in hand. We will want to be better than we were. Stronger. Wiser. Perhaps we could read something about the goings on in those video game minds? They’re always pleasant. Yes, that’ll do. That’ll do.

  • Tap Repeatedly have a splendid interview with master concept artist Daniel Dociu, who you will be familiar with from Guild Wars 1 & 2. He says stuff like this: “It seems at times that a strong visual identity tends to polarize the main stream audience. People will tend to love it or hate it, the further developers deviate from the vanilla. It prompts an attitude — which is what art should be about; but of course that response can be positive or negative. A realistic approach is easier to digest. With budgets only going up and teams getting bigger, with pressure increasing to generate more revenue faster, there is understandably a tendency on most developers part to play it safe and stay within a comfort zone.”
