Eschatoludology: What’s Your Final Game?

By John Walker on May 20th, 2011.

Don't forget to look up tomorrow evening!

As we all know by now, it’s Judgment Day tomorrow. And so will begin five months of all sorts of bother, and then the end of the world. Which is a shame. So assuming that you’re not scooped up to heaven, and that the earthquakes and fire raining from the sky will make gaming a little bit tricky as of about 5.30 tomorrow afternoon, we want to know what will be your final game? In the knowledge that time is up, it’s going to be the very last game you ever play. So which one will it be? An absolute favourite you’ve always been meaning to go back to? A classic you never got around to? Maybe a brand new game that you couldn’t afford, but hey – whatever – put it on your credit card! Or just one last raid? Clearly some people will suggest that playing a game isn’t the most appropriate response to facing your final hours, and something about loved ones, but don’t worry about them. What will it be?

Infinite Dragons? Dragon Age III Confirmed

By John Walker on May 20th, 2011.

You'll be amazed to learn this isn't the official logo.

So, there’s going to be a Dragon Age The Third then. Eurogamer reports that BioWare are looking to hire staff to work on the game. While possibly no surprise to anyone, it’s still nice to know it exists. They’re after environment artists, if that happens to be you. Let’s hope they give themselves a little longer to make this one.

Cargo! The Quest For A Demo

By Jim Rossignol on May 20th, 2011.

Fancy a taste of Ice Pick Lodge’s surreal puzzle adventure thing, Cargo!? I know that you do, and you are in lucky on this fine morning because an 800mb demo has materialised both on the main site, and at some other mirrors.

Cargo! is quite the game, as Quintin explained in his recent article: “Cargo is really a game about surprises. The surreal setting is forever dropping bizarre and brilliant turns of events into your lap, giving the game a mad momentum which is absolutely the best reason to play it.”

TikGames Announces Chucky Game

By Jim Rossignol on May 20th, 2011.

Good morning, internet.
Morning! TikGames, makers of uh Country Fair and Cinema Tycoon, have announced they are making a game based on ’80s killer-doll horror franchise, Chucky. “We’re proud to be able to bring a fan-favorite movie character, such as Chucky, to gaming platforms,” said Alex Tikhman, Co-Founder and Vice President of Publishing for TikGames. “Fans have been asking for a Chucky game for years and, soon, gamers around the world will be able to enjoy highly-entertaining, interactive, downright gory experiences with this brand.” Really? There are actually Chucky fans demanding a game of their favourite character? Okay. Okay.

It’s described as a “stealth-action romp” and TikGames explain that “Chucky will use his full repertoire of stealth and guile to dispatch victims in a multitude of distinctive methods”. It’s out in the Autumn.

RPS Asks: Do You Care About Early Reviews?

By Alec Meer on May 19th, 2011.

'Read all abaaaaaaaaht it, yesterday's news!'

Games journalism, back when we were all young bucks with spotty faces and an infinite capacity for fizzy lager drinks, used to work like this: you’d be sent game review code far in advance of its release, and you’d be able to publish your review days or even weeks before street-date. This system was expected and indeed necessary for magazines, with their weeks-long production cycle and de facto chokehold on gaming criticism. When gamers went to game shops, they’d thus have at least a working sense of what might or might not be worth their hard-earned.

Today, especially but not solely for websites, it’s become pretty much standard to be embargoed from publishing a game review until the day the game goes on sale – so not until the opportunity to buy the game has already come about.

Daggerdale Gathers Its Weapons

By Jim Rossignol on May 19th, 2011.

Okay, I know exactly who this loot-promoting trailer for forthcoming D&D hack ‘n’ slasher Daggerdale is aimed at. It’s for the action-RPG player who is basically in it for the haul. You know who you are. Hell, I know who some of you are. You just want that big sword, don’t you? And a bigger one? And shinier? You filthy beast.

Soldiering On: Arma III Announced

By Jim Rossignol on May 19th, 2011.

UPDATE: It’s now official, I’ve added a fact sheet and quotes from BIS below.

Well, “announced” would usually imply us getting a barrel full of emails from BIS themselves, but it looks like their website update came before the press releases this time. I’ve been bombarded with links to this, and yes, it’s Arma III. It sounds fairly epic: “After years of intense warfare against Eastern armies, Europe has become the last stand for the battered NATO forces. On the verge of being driven into the sea, NATO command embarks upon a most desperate measure. In the hope of seizing what seems to be a well-guarded military secret, Operation Magnitude is launched. A small group of Special Forces and Researchers are sent to a Mediterranean island deep behind enemy lines.” No tech details as such, but there’s some minimum specs: Intel Core i5 or AMD Athlon Phenom X4 or faster, Shader 3 graphics card, DX10 support minimum.

Goodness! It’s also due “2012″. More information on this when we get it, and I’ve posted the “fact sheet” below.

Lose Your Head: Serious Sam 3′s Kamikazes

By Alec Meer on May 19th, 2011.

A Serious Sam game without its screaming headless bombermen, the Kamikazes, would not be a Serious Sam game. Hence, it has now been indisputably proven that the upcoming Serious Sam 3: BFE is definitely a Serious Sam game. The bellowing explodey-blokes are back, but they’re… different.

Command Command & Conquer

By Alec Meer on May 19th, 2011.

This is Commander Conkers. I know I've made that joke before, but piss off, I love it.

Welcome back, commander. We know EA’s deathless strategy titan C&C is due for yet another reboot, but we don’t really know anything about what form it will take. Turns out EA – or at least their new strategy studio Victory Games – haven’t entirely worked it out yet either. Hence, they’ve put out an open call for suggestions and requests from players. It’s been a bit of confused old dear of late, but hopefully with fans’ help this once and future RTS king can be restored to its former glories.

The Guild Wars 2 RPS Fanquisition

By Alec Meer on May 19th, 2011.

This is not Martin Kerstein. He's prettier than that.

Yesterday I posted an interview with ArenaNet community manager Martin Kerstein about how Guild War 2′s planning to do away with traditional questing and grinding, which was something we hadn’t fully documented on RPS before. But you don’t want my stupid questions, do you? You want your own stupid/excellent questions. That’s why I posed a whole bunch of them, gleaned via the Twitters, at Kerstein when I met up with him. Covered: hats, cats, crafting, pirates, centaurs, PvP, difficulty, failure and whether this is a more or less tactical game than its predecessor.
