Notch Working On Minecraft Sky Dimension

By Quintin Smith on May 19th, 2011.

Caw, I hate floaty graphics engines.

All this work Minecraft developer Notch is still doing on his game is making it very difficult for me to maintain my mental image of him spending his days nibbling on a forest full of 5lb gummy bears. The latest revelation is that he’s building a “sky dimension”, which you can see above and in the gallery after the jump. How will you get there? What purpose will it serve? What happens if you fall off? We have no idea. But it’s looking pretty.

What? Skyrim Will Have “Unlimited Dragons”

By Quintin Smith on May 19th, 2011.

Sounds like it might 'drag on' a bit.

In a story that makes for one of the most double-take inducing headlines of 2011, Skyrim director Todd Howard last week told Norweigan outlet Gamer.no that Skyrim will have “an unlimited number of dragons”. You heard me right, people. Infinity dragons. If you were worrying about running out of dragons in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, well, don’t do that.

You can read parts one and two of the translated interview here and here. But wait! It gets better.

Serious Samurai: Sengoku Closed Beta

By Quintin Smith on May 19th, 2011.

Why did they build their banners so big?

Everything I’m learning about Sengoku sounds hugely positive. “It’s like Shogun: Total War, without the tactical battles,” said RPS contributor Dan Gril when we met up last week to pretend to be crappy heroes. I then went back and read Jim’s dynamite preview earlier this month.

ANYWAY, Sengoku’s due this September, but if you want to get involved in all that tactical treachery and strategic seppuku early, Paradox are now accepting signups for the closed beta. You can do so here. Old, characteristically fustian Paradox Interactive trailer follows…

Can You Help The Indie Stone?

By John Walker on May 18th, 2011.

Scenes in Hartlepool this morning.

Are you an indie developer who’s set up to receive money without going through either Paypal or Google Checkout? How do you fancy helping The Indie Stone, who couldn’t be having more bad luck and misfortune in the run up to the release of Project Zomboid if they all fell down drains and their trousers caught fire. The last disaster was when they had their money frozen by Google. The latest madness to happen to the fledgling indie studio is an email from Paypal announcing that they’re closing their account because of “bad customer experiences”, none of which The Indie Stone has ever heard of, nor has been proven by Paypal. The developers, planning to release the demo for Zomboid in only three days, now have accounts with both companies either frozen or closing (with their funds unobtainable) despite neither company offering any helpful explanation. They need help.

Life-Less: No New Valve Game At E3

By Alec Meer on May 18th, 2011.

Look how she's frowning at you for your silly rumour-mongering. Don't you feel stupid now?

A bunch of folk seem to have become convinced that Valve would be revealing something at E3 next month. Each and every rumour about Valve does of course involve Half-Life 3/Episode 3, and this one was no different. The long-awaited next slice of Gordonery would finally be shown at E3, whispers claimed. People became excited, but they shouldn’t have done. Valve will not be revealing a Half-Like game at E3. They won’t be showing off their other known project, DOTA 2, either. They won’t be revealing any kind of anything, in fact, as a mass mail-out by Valve has just confirmed that “we are not showing any titles at this year’s show“. That doesn’t, of course, mean they won’t be showing something later in the year, but if there is anything to show it certainly won’t be then. So that’s that. Got it? Good.

Oh, I do regret writing this post now. “News: there won’t be any news.” HOT SCOOPS Y’ALL.

Across The Universes: Cross-Server WoW

By Alec Meer on May 18th, 2011.

What next - goblins laying with gnomes?

Splitting players into different servers has always been one of the strangest decisions an MMO can make, even if it’s obviously an entirely practical one. We hear all about WoW’s 11-odd million subscribers, for instance, but it’s not like it’s a virtual world populated by 11 million people – instead, it’s a series of clone-worlds with a few hundred thousand folk trotting about. A few games have, of course, gotten around it in various ways – most famously and effectively Eve’s division of system in shards, but others have various instancing or the option to switch between servers on the fly. It’s perhaps too late for WoW to do that, but what it has now introduced is the option for players from different servers to meet for the same dungeon. No matter where you’re from, no matter who you are, you’ll be able to beat up trolls skeletons together. Join hands across the worlds, everyone.

Interview: Escaping The Grind In Guild Wars 2

By Alec Meer on May 18th, 2011.

Does a town explode in the woods if no-one is there to see it? In Guild Wars 2: yes

Hello! I recently had a sit’n'chat with ArenaNet’s Martin Kerstein in search of deeper detail about Guild Wars 2, an MMO for which we seem to have been waiting forever. Most of that chat was firing questions from RPS readers at him, which I’ll be posting on the morrow (that’s how people in fantasy games speak, you see. They’d never say ‘tomorrow’), but my own probing about Guild Wars 2′s oft-repeated promise that it’s escaped the usual MMO treadmill of questing and grinding bears a standalone post. Will this really be the long-promised MMO rapture, the online world that’s free from the increasing irritatingly traditions of this oft-static genre? Let’s find out…

Wot I Think: The Witcher 2

By Jim Rossignol on May 18th, 2011.

So. Finished. I even had a little time to play through some of the alternate storyline stuff. What do I think? Well, I don’t think I’ll be putting any spoilers in this review, so you can read my thoughts on the subject with some degree of safety. If something else needs go above the jump here, it should probably be this: The Witcher 2 is going end up being talked about for a very long time to come.

With Fire & Sword – Captain Smith, Pt. 2

By Quintin Smith on May 18th, 2011.

And Lukasz never complained about an itch on his face again.
Part one of Captain Smith’s adventures in Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword saw me learning the lay of the land. Specifically, a very small patch of land directly underneath my face after discovering the sodding Thresh of musketmen and being shot off my horse. Taken prisoner by the very bandits I sought to eliminate, the fate of Captain Smith is looking bleak…

Atari Going Casual: Cryptic For Sale

By John Walker on May 18th, 2011.

Homeless.

It looks like Atari, recently the focus of negative attention after Test Drive Unlimited developer Eden Games went on strike due to their treatment, are looking to gather some more cash. Via PCG we see Gamespot spotted the news that the publisher is selling Cryptic, the studio behind Star Trek: Online and Champions: Online.
