It Only Gets Weirder: Socks Incorporated

By John Walker on May 18th, 2011.

This is the direction I'm taking this site in.

Oh dear, I unleashed something. Posting yesterday about the intriguing project City Of Epic – the RPG that has you going outside and doing exercise – I discovered a doorway that leads to other games that involve leaving your house. The first one I’ve found is about sock puppets. No, really. Socks Incorporated looks every kind of mad. Take a look. In fact, play it – it’s free!

Take Your Pick: Terraria Released

By Quintin Smith on May 18th, 2011.

He can dig it.

2D-Minecraft-except-not Terraria has been been released! More than that, it managed to sell 50,000 copies on its first day of release. If you have six pounds you can buy the game here here and also begin having fun whenever you please. Remarkable!

…the temptation is to leave this post there and go back to playing The Witcher 2, but I shall resist. I’ve been trained for this. Some details as to precisely what Terraria is, why you should be interested in it and a trailer await after the jump.

Cold War X-COM: Xenonauts On Show

By Alec Meer on May 18th, 2011.

Oops

It’s been a bit all-quiet for the Cold War-set X-COM reimagining Xenonauts for the last few months, but creators Goldhawk have finally broken cover to show how the major element – the ground combat – looks in action. The answer, you may not be terribly surprised to hear is “quite a bit like X-COM”, but clearly that’s exactly what we want. Higher res and detail is a fine thing, but it’s especially pleasing to see that destructible scenery, something so bafflingly absent from many of the commercial X-COM remakes, is present and correct.

Mod News: Excuses, Excuses

By Lewis Denby on May 18th, 2011.

Where were you all last week? I turned up and no one was here, honest! What’s that? No, I’m not crossing my fingers behind my back, and you definitely didn’t see him heading off on holiday. What nonsense. Anyway, to make up for it, here’s an extra-long edition of Mod News to cover the past two weeks. This time: Crash Bandicoot, a Warcraft III art mod, a surprising number of trailers and a bizarre remake of Deus Ex…

Duelling Wizards: MoaCube Reveals ArcMagi

By John Walker on May 18th, 2011.

This is how polite wizards fight.

A wizard battle is all too often represented as a simple affair. And the wizard community is getting increasingly upset at their representation in games. “It’s not just about hitting 1 and 2!” says a statement from Wizard Corp. So they should be very pleased to find out about ArcMagi – the sequel to indie dev MoaCube’s original wizardry battling, Magi. There’s a video below to prove it.

Crysis 2 Retaliation Map Pack Available

By Quintin Smith on May 18th, 2011.

You didn't hear it from me, but the Car Wot Goes Fast devs are working on Men Wot Go Bang.

Level up! Four of them, actually. The Retaliation map pack for Crysis 2 is now available for $10, say EA, presumably for purchase within the game because I certainly can’t see anywhere on the internet to buy it. The four maps, “Park Avenue” “Transit” “Shipyard” and “Compound” all look like they’d make a nice home for an excitable nano-warrior, and you can see all four in the following trailer, which is actually as much of an ad for the new maps as it is for Crysis 2 multiplayer in general. Look at those big men frolic!

Portal 2′s Final Hours: The Book

By John Walker on May 18th, 2011.

I think it's about TF2.

Portal 2: The Final Hours is a digital book about… wait, don’t tell me… no, it’s gone. The book is either called “The Final Hours of Portal 2″ if you believe Valve’s emails, or if you place your trust in Steam it’s called, “Portal 2: The Final Hours”. Will those two ever learn to get along?

It’s a big old thing, absolutely packed with information, interviews, pictures (one so close to his beard you can see what Chet ate for breakfast), videos, audio, interactive photographs, and thoughts on the process. And it’s all slidey and interactive, in a way that books are in films about the future. For £1.50, this seems a decent chunk of information. And you can find out what car Erik Wolpaw drives.

Bioshock 2 Minerva’s Den Comes To Daddy

By Alec Meer on May 17th, 2011.

To think, we might actually have an actual PC screenshot instead of just repeatedly using this owl picture soon

Good news, everyone. I’d given up absolutely all hope of this ever happening, and yet it has. The final DLC for Bioshock 2, Minerva’s Den, was a smart vignette full of nods to System Shock and the history of computing, not to mention being a welcome opportunity to approach the fascinating, doomed society of Rapture from a perspective other than its increasingly fantastical main narrative. This standalone tale of a calculating rogue AI seemed tailor-made for PC gamers… only PC gamers never got it. So it’s with fairly delighted surprise that we discover it’s finally, finally due out on PC almost a year after its console version.

Wot I Think: Fable III PC

By Alec Meer on May 17th, 2011.

After having been out on Xbox 360 for approximately 48 years, the PC version of Fable III arrived today. A roleplaying game designed primarily for people who don’t live and breathe roleplaying games, Lionhead’s game has charm in its blood and a tale of revolutionary heroism to shout about. Reception on console was mixed, but improvements and upgrades are promised for the PC version. Did they work? Here we go…

Sarif Industries Are Sponsoring Deus Ex 3

By John Walker on May 17th, 2011.

Remember to remove before wiping.

Yesterday I got jolly (justifiably) cross about some Facebook-based nonsense “advertising” Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Today I would like to celebrate some really rather excellent nonsense advertising Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The very splendid fake ad below is a gag-free, wonderfully made commercial for Sarif Industries – they behind the beginnings of human augmentation.
