Wargame: European Escalation Announced

By Quintin Smith on May 13th, 2011.

Tanks! Like mutant lawnmowers.

Oooh! Ruse developers Eugen Systems have spilled the beans on their latest project, Wargame: European Escalation, and those standing behind the protective bean screen have relayed the relevant information to the internet. It’s going to be another real-time strategy game using the same engine as Ruse (and the same incredible zoom effect, which it turns out is called IRISZOOM™ (hnng)), only this time the setting will of a fictional Cold War conflict that “could have been”. Details and a screenshot of the two blindest tanks in existence await you in the grim concrete bunker below.

Call of Whoopsie: Modern Warfare 3 Spoilt?

By Alec Meer on May 13th, 2011.

The guy on the left leaked it. I have PROOF

Someone’s getting a) bollocked b) fired c) executed tonight, I’m sure. If Kotaku’s sources are right, basically everything about this year’s Call of Duty has just been blown wide open and revealed to John Q. Public some six months before likely release. It’s Modern Warfare 3 and it’s…

Heroes Of Newerth Is Free For A Bit

By Jim Rossignol on May 13th, 2011.

What does this image say to you? It says THIS IS A VIDEOGAME. AoE motherfukka, AOE.
From today until the 22nd, to be precise. It’s all to celebrate one year since the game’s launch. A bit like a birthday, only a for a game, which had a long beta. This means that you can pay the hero-based multi-player teamplay combat arena thinga-game (did we ever actually ever get past the “DOTA-clone” name for these? Was it a MOBA? I am so tired) for nil pennies! I know how excited that makes you, so don’t just sit there vibrating, go take a look at the website, where details of registration and downloads can be found, understood, and executed.

I played this a bunch last year. It was tough. I am a nood.

With Fire & Sword – Captain Smith, Pt. 1

By Quintin Smith on May 13th, 2011.

To boldy shank where no-one has shanked before.
I’ve been meaning to take a stab at free-form medieval RPG series Mount & Blade for years. YEARS. So it thrills me to say that I’m currently having an incredible time with Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword, the latest game in the series which came out last week.

Join me for the adventures of Captain Smith, the worst mercenary leader to ever roam Eastern Europe.

Ace Of Space: Sanctum Gets New Level

By Quintin Smith on May 13th, 2011.

Die die die die DIE DIE DIE DIE NO. NO. NO. DAMMIT.

I’m a fan of indie tower defence FPS Sanctum, what with it ticking off the four Quinns food groups (dramatic, interesting, full of personality and cheap), and you can even hear me talking about it a bit too fast on the latest Three Moves Ahead podcast. I am, therefore, glad to announce that the developers have rolled out the first of the promised free content updates for the game (now patched into the game automagically via Steam), introducing a new level, Glade, and a handful of new UI improvements . Bringing the game’s total level count to, uh, four. But seriously, don’t worry about that. According to Steam, I’ve spent more time playing Sanctum than I have Portal 2. An old trailer follows…

The RPS Verdict: Brink

By RPS on May 13th, 2011.

Brink is here, and we’ve been playing it. We’ve even got some servers up. But what do Alec, Jim, and Quintin actually think about it? Let’s find out.

Jim: Brink then, the long-awaited multiplayer shooter from British devs Splash Damage. Everyone had a bit of a play?

Quintin: I have shot so many men.

Impressions: Steel Storm Burning Retribution

By John Walker on May 13th, 2011.

The cel-shading is done with a fair degree of subtlety, too.
Coo, I spent a rather pleasant Thursday evening with this one. The awkwardly named Steel Storm: Burning Retribution (can steel burn, or indeed storm?), from the even more peculiarly named indie developer, Kot-in-Action Creative Artel, is top-fun top-down shooting. I’ve decided the game is just called Steel Storm, and that the developers are now KIA Cartel. Much easier. Let’s take a look (from immediately above).

Look At You, Hackers: The Deus Ex Data Theft

By Alec Meer on May 13th, 2011.

Hackers don't look like this.

Oh dear. Internet rotters have done it again, this time turning their attentions to the official website for Deus Ex: Human Revolution and for developer Eidos Montreal. But their hacking is not yer common-or-garden Denial of Service attack or painting pink moustaches on pictures of Adam Jensen – it’s stealing the personal data of some 80,000 registered users. Thanks so much, hackers.

Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning Looks Good

By Quintin Smith on May 13th, 2011.

Has that monster grown a reading light?

I’m still a touch nervous about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning after the developers announced it’s the precursor to an MMO set in the same universe, but EA’s just released the game’s PAX demo online and the game does look like fun. The action seems weighty and robust, and the attack effects are explosively pretty without getting in the way of things (click here to see some explosive prettiness getting in the way of things). The world looks oddly empty, too, but never mind that. See for yourself after the jump.

Don’t Be Lonely: Diablo III’s Followers

By Jim Rossignol on May 13th, 2011.

LASER LASER
Dungeon crawling can be a lonesome business. Sometimes you get a cat or a donkey to carry loot for you, but they’re not much for conversation. What you need is a man with a crossbow, or a girl with magic hands, or something. Gadzooks! That’s precisely the innovation that little-known Californian studio “Blizzard” will be adding to their forthcoming hand-and-therefore-slash title, Diablo III. They’ve even release a video to illustrate how the system might work. Gosh, it’s amazing what plucky little studios can pull off when they just try. Check out their efforts below.

Brink: Release, RPS Servers, Bugs

By Jim Rossignol on May 12th, 2011.

Brink is out now in the US and apparently out in the UK tomorrow. We’ve spent the last couple of days playing it, but you’ll have to wait until tomorrow for our full critical verdict. Nevertheless I thought I’d say a few things tonight, including venting my frustration with a critical bug, and providing you with our server details for US and UK-based Brink servers. Read on for a mixed bag of information!
