You Can Play Rift For Free, Now

By Jim Rossignol on May 11th, 2011.

For a week, anyway. There’s a 7-day trial up on the main Rift site, which allows you to play the dimension-bleeding fantasy MMO for no pennies. I’ve still not got around to dabbling, but I understand from Dan’s review, and also from a few of you lot who are playing, that it’s one of the more interesting takes on the MMO business of late (despite some issues with the big public events…)

Anyway, go take a look!

Rabbiting On: The Pretty Madness Of Alice 2

By Alec Meer on May 11th, 2011.

She puts horses heads in people's beds. Also, on sticks.

I believe we’ve only been wandering the dark realms of pre-rendered and weakman footage for USA McWow’s belated sequel to olden wierdo-actioner Alice until now, so ’tis a fine thing to finally present proper in-game videos of Madness Returns. It is it wonderland or ponderousland? Oof, that didn’t work at all.

A really fantastic in-depth interview with Valve’s Erik Wolpaw has been posted by the NYU Game Center as part of their lecture series. During it Wolpaw plays Portal 2, talking about the process behind creating the game, the motivations behind many of the decisions, and a great deal of thought about how story and games interact. Age Of Empires Online Online In Autumn

By Alec Meer on May 11th, 2011.

Is that concept art or a screenshot? I can't even tell anymore.

Just a morning quickie for you, dearie. Microsoft’s free to play, levelling up-based resurrection of its mysteriously-killed RTS franchise Age of Empires now bears a more-or-less release date, and that is this Autumn, or Tumble, or whatever it is that the colonies insist on calling it. The Gas Powered Games co-developed Age of Empires Online is a free to play jobbie, funded by paid-for DLC – primarily in the form of extra playable civs, modes and willy-waving cosmetic upgrades for units.

NaClBox: Play Monkey Island In A Browser

By John Walker on May 10th, 2011.

This is a picture of Monkey Island in a browser.

That’s my slightly sensationalist tabloid headline, but it’s entirely true. So long as you own the game, etc. And via the burgeoning magic that is NaClBox. Which really does let you play Monkey Island, or indeed any other DOS game playable in DOSBox, in a web browser. If that web browser is Google’s Chrome. I know it’s true – I did it.

By John Walker on May 10th, 2011.

See, I already love it just from one image.

Aha! Proper Info On Hitman Absolution

By Alec Meer on May 10th, 2011.

Get out of my gunman of eden, serpent

Following a distinctly unrevaltory teaser trailer earlier today, the slow dribble from the promotional teat for IO’s just-announced fifth Hitman is now running a little faster – we now have a few early details on the game’s theme and the tech behind it. “Never before seen”, “familiar but significantly different…” Uh-oh. Change – the internet’s least favourite thing. Prepare the twin engines of excitement and rage, faithful pseudo-asssassins….

Bald Spot: Hitman 5′s Trailer And Title

By Alec Meer on May 10th, 2011.

Snicker

Here we go… After a flurry of rumour and ARG-based teasing, a comeback for the murderous man with the marvelous pate is now officially confirmed. We have a name – as has been series tradition since the third game, there’ll be no number in the title. This is not Hitman 5, but instead Hitman Absolution. But what will our stern Agent 47 be absolving himself of? Forgetting to put the bins out on time for the sixth week running, is my guess. Maybe it’ll be something to do with assassionation, though. Anyway! The first trailer, all 27 bloody seconds of it, is below. No in-game footage, of course (we never get that until the eleventh hour these days, it seems) but we do get some mood-setting music and some glove-porn.

Gaming Is Mostly Dead: Dead Block Trailer

By John Walker on May 10th, 2011.

He looks friendly enough.

It’s really not fair on Dead Block, which has just announced that it will be using the Unreal Engine 3, that it feels like one heck of a heavy straw for this here camel. Because it looks pretty cute. Jim mentioned its existence last week, and now we have a trailer for you below. It’s funny, and the game looks like it might be ace. But crikey, there’s a lot of games about zombies with “dead” in the title.

Change of Plans: We’re Going Here Instead

By Lewie Procter on May 10th, 2011.

As a hasty follow up to ill hatched plans of last week, we’ve relocated the Manchester RPS Social Club meet to Kyoto Lounge. Kyoto Lounge has a couple of advantages over Font Bar, number one being that they pick up their phone so I was actually able to book it. Number two is that they are a Gaming Bar.
