Heavily Engaged: Panzer General 2

By Tim Stone on May 9th, 2011.

Three of PC wargaming’s most succulent fruit reached ripeness in the same fortnight in autumn 1997. Having featured Sid Meier’s Gettysburg! and Close Combat 2 in the last two Heavily Engageds, it only seems right that the subject of this week’s rumble reportage is the third of the trio. Beyond the jump is a world of hard-won hexagons, coveted core units, and tight timetables. Ready a salute, you are about to enter the command tent of Panzer General 2. Read the rest of this entry »

Mortar The Point: Darkest Hour Hits v5.0

By Quintin Smith on May 9th, 2011.

Is that guy on the machine gun picking his nose?

You know Red Orchestra, the supremely bleak multiplayer FPS set on the Eastern front of WW2? Darkest Hour is a similarly dark and moody mod for it which hefts out RO’s black, oily heart and transplants it into the Western Front. As well as adding new maps, new weapons and vehicles, its features include “Airborne drops… bullet suppression and supersonic cracks”. The horror.

This weekend Darkest Hour hit version 5.0, adding even more maps, vehicles and weapons (including mortars and mortar teams), as well as plenty of uplifting new features like “Players now drop their weapon when they suffer falling damage,” “Players now fall over when shot in the legs,” and “Players can catch fire from nearby exploding vehicles and world fires”. THE HORROR. Trailer and mammoth changelog after the jump.

Motor Bloat: Test Drive 2 Free DLC Out

By Quintin Smith on May 9th, 2011.

Cars! Aren't they great? Like excitable living rooms.

Joystiq report that the Exploration pack for Test Drive Unlimited 2 has been released! Twenty new missions, two new mission types, two new cars (a Lancia Stratos and Dodge Charger), new clothes to wear and more, as well as a bumload of bugfixes that include “Cars no longer launched into the air by glitches in the road” and “impact with tress is now less severe”. Boo!

My dream online driving game would consist almost entirely of people climbing out of their cars to examine crash damage, their overweight avatars clutching their face in both hands and making noises of unfathomable sadness. Anyway, you’ll find the full feature listing of the Exploration pack after the jump

A Tunnel Vision: Extreme PortalCraft

By Quintin Smith on May 9th, 2011.

If recreating other games in Minecraft becomes a proper hobby, I demand we call it Boxing.

I remember the game that inspired Portal, Narbacular Drop, looking a bit like Minecraft, so you could say that Extreme Portalcraft – a Minecraft mod that offers new Portal puzzles, featuring everything from the portal gun to pressure plates – takes Portal back to its cube roots. That’s a science joke! Sort of.

You can download chapter one of the mod here, and chapter two here. You can also watch of trailer for chapter one after the jump, if only to admire the craftsmanship that’s gone into this. Thanks to RPS reader Matthew “Fingers” Jones for the tip.

Last week I got a chance to look at upcoming 4X sequel, Sword Of The Stars II. We’ve all seen the fruits of the overhauled 3D battle engine, but what what of the other aspects of this many tentacled space-beast? Read on for some thoughts.

Oh My Goodness, Play The Tiny Bang Story

By John Walker on May 9th, 2011.

I wish all games could be lovely, sometimes.

That’s if you have a spare £12 on Steam (or even £15 £12 now too – the power we wield! – on GamersGate) for a game that should probably cost closer to £6. Just browsing through Steam I spotted a recent addition I realised we’d not written about yet, and wondered if that meant it was the usual “casual” blather. It’s not. The Tiny Bang Story is absolutely lovely.

Panzer Command: Ostfront Has A Demo

By Jim Rossignol on May 9th, 2011.

Some tanks, out for a stroll.
Hello. Do you like commanding Panzers? I bet you do. And you’re in luck, because tankcentric wargame Panzer Command has a demo out for Ostfront, its new iteration based on the full breadth of landwar action on World War II’s Eastern Front. As I understand it, there’s a significant amount of commanding Panzers involved, as you can see by watching the trailer which I’ve posted below. The full version of Ostfront includes previously released Kharkov and Winterstorm releases, making up ten preset historical campaigns and fourteen randomly generated scenarios. That’s a lot of tank commanding, yes sir.

The Sunday Papers

By Jim Rossignol on May 8th, 2011.

Sundays are for filling our pipe up with mustard and having a good old smoke in the library. Because the library is where one must reside to give a proper impression of our acumen and capacity for understanding. Another way of impressing intellect upon human typicals is to be seen reading long strings of English words. I’ve provided some of those below, for your edification.

Gaming Made Me: Games Workshop Made Me

By Dan Griliopoulos on May 7th, 2011.

I’m ten. I’m sitting in the solvent-soaked school art room doodling, when my friends sneak in. They’ve got something amazing to show me. It’s a little dwarf made out of lead, and Fat Winnie has just bought it off Big-Nosed Will, who actually painted it. It’s like got an AXE! Will’d mainly used red paint on it (“For the blood” he says. He now works in advertising) but it’s soooo cool. This is the start.
