There’s some stuff you hope will never happen when you are trapped on a plane. This is one of those things. Nothing of the game is shown, of course, but for a live-action vignette to say a bit about how the game is going to be I think it works. Aliens get shot.
For a more in-depth reason to be interested, check out Alec’s preview of the game. Open-world space bounty-hunter has me intrigued…

I’m sure this isn’t new and I’ve seen it somewhere else/here before and thought it was quite good already….
EDIT: Ah, there we go, newness. Smells like pine trees.
report
this is the new live action trailer:

report
The trailer in your link is the same than in the news, actually.
report
that was posted before the link was fixed.
report
This is an alternative RPS april fools gag where the whole team acts like they live in a time… 3 months ago I guess.
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/03/16/aliens-on-a-plane-first-prey-2-trailer/
report
Ah. Thanks to Jim, for that sneaky edit. Kudos for making me look like an ass
report
Actually it was Alec :)
report
Actually, it’s not the same trailer AT ALL. This one follows the events of the one you’re linking. I think it’s quit impressing actually. Wouldn’t mind a game looking like this rendering ! (on a side note, I see this and I remember a Valve interview about how they conceived their trailers… ^^)
report
Steve, it was the same video before Alec edit’d it.
report
“A bo…?!”
report
You make a good detective S.T.
report
Made me think of Strangers Wrath
report
and that is never a bad thing. This game actually looks pretty good
report
Is it just me or does this blog post’s title seem misleading? It says live-action but the posted trailer is CGI? And not at all worrying yo. Looks awesomesauce.
report
Hmmm…I think it is live action due to the guy at the end looking real, the problem is that aliens and shiny future cities could only be cg’d…live action in the same way that Avatar is? Everythings live that is real and all the rest is CG, I think that’s what it is.
report
Nah everything after the plane scene is full CG, the plane crash bit is live, and probably just stock footage from some old sci-fi (sorry syfy) channel crap that they reworked.
report
Yeah nothing past the plane is “Live”. I can tell by the pixels and having seen many CG trailers in my time.
report
Good lord. There must be some serious production people with nothing much to do these days if this is the standard of video game marketing we’re going to see more of.
report
Presume following the Dead Island trailer virality, getting an awesome promo out the door a year before release is now the Done Thing. And then hope everyone by the time of release that the game is nothing like what you sold in the trailer.
report
This looks fantastic.
report
Greatness!
report
intriguing
report
Hoping for more Country music on the soundtrack. :)
report
Agreed. I’m usually not that into country music, but with this setting it worked wonderfully.
report
I’d watch this movie. Can’t wait for when games reach this level..
report
The game, show me the gaaaammmeeeee!
report
Erm, that’s not live-action, that’s CG chaps.
report
However all the human beings are actual people.
report
Firefly meets Bladerunner?
report
I was thinking Cowboy Beebop meets Firefly meets…Star Wars?
I hope the main character has enough, uh, character to match the setting.
report
I’m sorry what in that trailer looked in anyway like Firefly.
report
The music. :)
report
*Sigh* why do characters always seem to land with one hand down and one hand up…
Must remember to replay Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter sometime as well.
report
Too many directors have watched awsome old Shaolin Kung Fu movies. Thats what they do when they land from a leapy thing (the original oriental word for it)
report
Not sure why I didn’t look for this as a trope before…
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThreePointLanding
report
Very promising. Now I like the setting.
(What’s up with me not seeing the comments?)
report
Glad it’s not just me who can’t see the comments. Hivemind – little help here?
report
lol turians
report
Hell yeah.
report
Oh my god this looks so cool
report
It may because I’m American and am therefore not accustomed to the famous dry English humour, but I could swear this isn’t live action. Or did I miss something? It is 4am after all.
report
Are we honestly sure this is live-action? Just looks like very good CGI to me…
Also, why can’t I see the rest of the comments?!
report
It’s semi-live action for the first 10 seconds or so, everything after the Bethesda software screen is CG
report
This looks absolutely fantastic. The first Prey was ok, but this looks totally different. Will there be parkour style running, I hope?
report
Ok, I didn’t really like the first game, but that was a pretty freaking sweet trailer.
report
Now *that* is a very nice trailer. Some studios should take notes *cough* bioware *cough* *cough*
report
Awesome! An FMV game! Not seen one of those in years
report
Oh
My
God
**Hype do-want mode activated**
..
Not worried about the live action aspect, it just looks like higher quality CGI based on the game models we have already seen in screenshots. This game just jumped right up my happy list :)
report
Now there’s a cool fucking trailer.
report
I cant see comments for some reason.
report
Worrying, maybe, but it’s still damn cool. Very much looking forward to this.
report
I realise this is nothing of what the actual game will be like, but that was pretty bad ass. I think it’s a smart direction to take the game, I hear some complain about the lack of connection to the first, but would you really want one?
Also – Cash.
report
Damn, this looks pretty exciting. Assassin’s Creed + Mass Effect = tasty excitement.
report
Loving the acoustic Soundgarden.
report
I think you’ll find that it’s a cover of Rusty Cage, by Johnny Cash, from the album Unchained. It’s not acoustic Soundgarden.
report
Well, it’s kinda acoustic Soundgarden. It’s just not acoustic Soundgarden played by Soundgarden.
report
Quite awesome.
report
I hate live action videos. I love proof of concept videos. I love this one.
report
well despite it being live action, i think it looks pretty good. The whole concept seems really awesome to me, it’s like it’s our time to play jango fett haha!
report
Amazing. Take my Cash.
report
that looks good.
report
Uh… most of the trailer except two scenes is CG, not “live” action. It’s a CG trailer, more than a live action trailer.
And it’s good. It’s CG, not real gameplay, but at least it shows the idea behind the game, the visual style, and even it hints some of the gameplay mechanics, i think (the grav grenade, the rocket boots, sliding and shooting).
report
Me gusta I think. Johnny Cash, not-overly serious looking, interesting design choices. Hmm
report
Did no one else observe the missing PC logo at the end?
report
Considering PCG and RPS have done interviews and previews, I think its safe to say there is a PC version.
I’d rather there be no PC logo than there be a GfWL one at any rate.
report
I asked them about it at the facebook page and they said “Don’t worry, the game is coming to PC”
report
English-speaking aliens again… But the trailer looks good!
report
I put a fish in your ear when you were sleeping. ;)
report
I do wish they (most devs/publishers) would piss off with live action and CG trailers. Who bloody cares what some production company can put together? Show us the bloody game. Is it even a trailer if it includes nothing from the product?
report
I care. That was a very enjoyable trailer on its own.
report
Reminds me more than anything of Oddworld: Stranger. Being a gunslinging bounty-hunter on the lawless weird frontier is a theme I’d love to revisit. Here’s hoping the game can live up to the trailer concept.
report
Reminded me of Anachronox!
Also, new film Rango is about as close to a Stranger’s Wrath movie we’re going to get. I really liked it.
report
A complete aside, but I really can’t stand using the name ‘Stranger’s Wrath’. It just sounds WRONG. Which makes sense, given that it was the name EA marketing made them change it two in the last couple months of development, because the witty/punny ‘Oddworld: Stranger’ was apparently not grimdark enough for them.
report
Yeah … Stranger had me at the opening cutscene and the living ammo, and lost me somewhere after that. I liked it, but I really wanted to love it.
That aside, it’s a really fantastic concept and this iteration is shaping up nicely by the looks of it. Excellent concept, mostly irrelevant but incredibly awesome trailer, and some rather smashing art direction. I’m excited.
report
Looks like an interesting concept. Though I can’t help noticing that this appears to have nothing to do with Prey. Seems like another game using a trademark just to maximise sales.
report
Hang on, what?
At first I thought the game was going to be set on the sphere from the original game, seeing as you appear to crash-land there on the plane that you actually see in Prey 1. But by the end of it, it looked absolutely nothing like the Prey I remember; more like some wierd mix of Mass Effect and Duke Nukem. Hmm.
report
You guys have terrible eyes/brains. That’s CG, they’re just better at it these days. Especially when the models aren’t subject to the uncanny valley, being aliens and all.
report
As has been mentioned above the footage on the plane is live, and probably just reworked stock footage at that.
Everything after that is CG.
report
I don’t see what’s worrying about it. Looks awesome, sounds awesome, probably won’t look like the finished game, and I don’t care. On my “interested” list.
report
More games need to have Johnny Cash in them.
report
FFS this is CG. How can you not tell?
report
They chose the blue pill.
report
Nice, Johnny Cash and some live action alien hunting. Lot to live up to for the actual game mind.
report
As apparently the only person on god’s green earth outside of Id that really liked Prey; thought the gameplay was good; the atmosphere great; the alien race not that bad; and the main character to be genuinely likable, even if a bit of a positive stereotype of a member of the First Nations; I will say I myself am concerned about the game seeming to at this point have no connection to the first one, other than a lipservice reference to the plane crashing on the sphere.
That on top of this trailer makes me not that excited. I’m at the the point where non-gameplay trailers do nothing to encourage me to want to buy a game. I actually use it as a negative until gameplay comes along. Thats all I want to see is the game, in action.
report
No portals?
No crazy gravity shenanigans?
Not interested.
Also so many effort has clearly been put into making the protagonist as generic as possible it makes me want to vomit.
report
I would watch this show. And then if they made a game based on it I’d likely play that too.
report
Meh, with all the cool aliens on the screenshots I’ve seen before I thought you play as one of them – getting alien abilities, alien women, alien one-liners.
Instead it’s the same old generic male commando stuff.
report
That’s not a bad idea to go full on alien with it. Although technically the main character is the alien in that world. ;)
report
If this trailer is an accurate depiction of the atmosphere of the game then I am sold.
I really, really hope the city looks just as awesome in the actual game. I hope it feels truly alive and kicking with npc’s that look they belong there, doing their thing. Not just being static objects waiting for you to approach them.
report
If the first game was indians, then I guess this one is cowboys. I love the premise though, as it gets closer to release and we see some actual gameplay footage I will allow myself to be excited.
report
Forget Dead Island – this is the game trailer of the year.
report
This is AMAZING. I want this right now. And also, noticed how damn effective subtlety is? Instead of chewing through one-liners or making loud brash noises, this man (this man!) uses his mouth for one expressive thing: a minuscule smirk. He sees a giant half robot half flesh thing in front of him, notices there’s a bounty on it, and he smirks. YES! I want to be that guy, now.
report
While I understand this has nothing to do with the game besides maybe a vague proof of concept and showing the atmosphere/vibe they are going for…. I thought this was very entertaining and would like to see a show like this. Hopefully the game will be able to capture this in a fun package. Also hope its not limited by the lowest common denominator (platform)…
report
Umm. I want to run around on ceilings please?
report
Looks fantastic.
report
What an unsatisfying gun noise.
