Trackmania 2 Will Be Ludicrous

By Jim Rossignol on June 8th, 2011 at 10:38 am.

Trackmania 2′s E3 Canyon trailer (below) is even more insane than the last one. Ludicrous sense of speed, ludicrous cartoon physics, ludicrous spewing of cars over vertiginous chasms, ludicrous ludicrousness. If this is genuinely representative of the kind of game we can expect from Nadeo’s latest, then I will be a happy racer. Go take a look.

Indeed! Looks good! But I would love to see a trailer from the in game view. You know, driver perspective run round a track instead of just cinematic.

    wowzer

  3. lhzr says:

i like how nadeo don’t get mentioned in the trailer at all.

what i found ludicrous was how this looked so much less ludicrous than the older trackmania trailers.

oh, ubi, please don’t buy any other franchises that i used to enjoy.

deleted the rest of the post because no one likes a negative nancy, but yeah.. hopes are low.

  4. Eggy says:

That is a lot of cars.

This is one of those games (as are all trackmania iterations) that fulfills that childhood feeling of “this is what games should be like”. It’s rediculous, it’s me playing with matchbox launchers and seeing how far they can fire up the patterned wallpaper and then figuring out if i put another strip of track JUST here then they land, fly across the carpet and straight into the leg of the dining table… or my dads foot.

ANYWAY it’s that whole playing Skidmarks when you’re kids and actually dreaming of this.

  6. President Weasel says:

    That trailer made me smile.

  7. Vexing Vision says:

    Sweet!

(But I would LOVE to have the option to turn collisions on… I know, I know. Just… between players then? Please?)

    • Wilson says:

Yeah, same here! Even if it’s really basic or with dodgy physics, just giving the option would open up some other humorous game types (cops and robbers style play on Trackmania maps? Yes please!)

    • Pointless Puppies says:

Ew, no. That would make online play nothing short of a disaster.

    • Tatourmi says:

That would be optional, so I guess nope. And that is also one of my biggest fancies. They gave us awesome loopings and jumps and speed and cars, high speed accidents and car chases is the last thing left to fulfill the childish dream.

    • gwathdring says:

Pointless Puppies, That’s why it would be an option. For those people who want to have very small rallies (by Trackmania standards) and be able to shunt each other off the the track.

For big, classic rallies, it would of course remain Trackmania. I LOVE the race-against-yourself gameplay in Trackmania. It’s like VVVVVV–fantastic, easy to attempt a second time, as difficult as you want to make it by pushing yourself. It’s quite lovely. But since we have cars and race tracks, it would be fun to sit down with a friend and actually race. It’s not why I buy Trackmania, but it would make a nice bonus feature.

  8. Stranglove says:

You know the best thing? Shootmania. SHOOTMANIA

  9. StickyNavels says:

I thought that article said “vaginous chasms” and I’m not sure why.

    • Mr_Hands says:

Naw, girl. This ain’t my first go. I drive my car into vaginous chasms all the time on this Trackmania game I play.

      Where you going, baby?

  10. Premium User Badge Nero says:

This trailer is very nice and I really like the Trackmania concept (I wish they would show something from QuestMania and ShootMania soon) but I have always been very bad at this game, always jumping off track and stuff. Still great fun though.

  11. Premium User Badge Sagan says:

Looks like it drives similarly to the Island car, which was always my favorite. And the main reason why I stopped playing Trackmania was that nobody was driving the Island car anymore online. So yeah, looks like I’m getting exactly what I want.

    • neems says:

Agreed. Island was always the best – sheer speed and insanity.

      I love Trackmania, can’t wait.

  12. undu says:

    gameplay, please :(

    • CaspianRoach says:

      It is gameplay.

    • undu says:

It may be in-engine, but that’s not what you see when you play at the game, or is it?

    • CaspianRoach says:

This can be made in built-in replay editor, well, except for the disappearing/appearing road parts thing. You can do all crazy things with camera and amount of cars in a replay otherwise. Been that way since first TrackMania.

  13. Squirrelfanatic says:

    F-Zero with cars.

  14. CaspianRoach says:

I’m kinda dissapointed they didn’t show any other game modes, only Canyon. What happened to 3 game modes/game of trackmania original and sunrise? :(

    • lhzr says:

everywhere they seem to refer to it as Trackmania 2: Canyon. dunno what that means, perhaps they’re trying something similar to what blizzard is doing with sc2?

    • Kismet says:

The plan is to release each new environment as a separate, independent title.

(source: TrackMania2: Centralised News about the Game thread on Maniaplanet Forum)

    • lhzr says:

right, i take back my comparison to sc2. in sc2 you had all races available in multi.

so what’s the vibe amongst the tm community? are people cool with this ?

    • Kismet says:

I don’t know about the community as a whole, personally while I don’t generally see favourably the parcellation of games, without any official word about pricing, “size” and release frequency of titles I prefer to stick to a ‘wait and see’ approach.

I’m more annoyed by the fact there will still be limited tries for official times (five per day if I remember correctly) and worried that they may somehow try to make people pay for extra chances for an official record (it’s just a slightly paranoid trip on my side mind me, based on the impression gathered here and there that planets – TM2 equivalent of Trackmania coppers – will have a closer relation with real money than what they had in Trackmania United).

    • lhzr says:

about the release frequency they said they’re planning to release one environment per year for each of the three mania games. and the price might be around 20.

anyway, tm united still looks great and plays great. so there’s that. i guess they could force people to move to tm2 by stopping the online support for united, though.

    • Hmm-Hmm. says:

Oh.. I suddenly got from highly enthusiastic to.. disappointed. Releasing every environment as a full-fledged title? Really? *sigh*

At least that’s ludicrous on a whole different level.

    • Kismet says:

about the release frequency they said they’re planning to release one environment per year for each of the three mania games. and the price might be around 20.

Yep, I read those informations in the thread I linked above, but the €19.99 price seemed more about making an example than making an announcement, and frequency a vague plan, bound to change depending on production capabilities.

I think they’re still trying to gauge which kind of economical pressure their audience will endure, as increasing the average player expenditure looks like the main point of the parcellation of environments. I’m definitely not expecting a deal as good as Trackmania United.

I’ll probably buy the first environment and make up my mind from there.

    • Tatourmi says:

Oh, well, fuck it. It just went from must buy to “wait for steam sale”, along with those other games.

  15. Drake Sigar says:

    Fuck you, gravity!

  16. Stevostin says:

This makes me wonder what will be in shootmania and RPGmania. This sure looks exciting, for a car game.

    • lhzr says:

check the link above. shootmania is gonna be a multi only shooter that will run on the same engine as trackmania 2 and use the same editor.

    • Stevostin says:

I know but right now it’s not ready for a trailer that could give me a feel of it. Wait and see !

  17. lhzr says:

“TrackMania 2: Canyon, the remarkably straightforward sequel that strips everything back to basics, reverting to a single race gametype and the rocky terrain set of the very first instalment.”

    argh

    • CaspianRoach says:

Well then it will suffer from the same problem Nations had: it will become boring very fast. In previous games when you got bored with 1 type of car you could just switch and enjoy the other… Here I can’t see a solution other than turn the game off and play something else. sadface.

    • Wilson says:

Huh. Interesting and slightly saddening read. I’m going to assume they will either put loads of content within the one area so that it’s as good as multiple different areas, or the price will be pretty low. Unless they do something very special with that ‘basic’ design, I might just stick to the old Trackmania.

    • Urthman says:

Really? If anything I was more tightly addicted to the one-car Nations than to the 7-car United. (I got golds in all but two of the Nations tracks, but haven’t yet got all the red golds in Forever, much less the blacks.) I think forcing me to stick with one car made me better at the game than I am now switching from one car to another.

    • gwathdring says:

      I love Nations.

  18. itsallcrap says:

Hmm, this video makes me nervous about system requirements.

My pooter is getting to be very much at the low end of ‘acceptable’ as a games machine, but I’d have thought I could rely on Trackmania to be low-spec.

Anyone know what the spec is? I know the closed beta is being organised ATM, so I assume they’ll have to tell people soon…

    • Urthman says:

I’ve always thought of Trackmania has a poster child for games with modest graphics that are perfectly satisfying the way they are.

The new game looks great, but I think I’ll happily play it on the lowest graphical settings necessary to get at least 60 fps.

  19. Daz says:

    “Prepare for Ludicrous Speed!”

It was so easy, surprised no one else had said it already ;)

    This trailer needz more Island

  21. rocketman71 says:

If they put UbiShitDRM into this, I’m killing someone.

  22. Magnetude says:

How long are they going to keep making you use that same screenshot for?

  23. KilgoreTrout_XL says:

Nice. That was the most entertaining E3 trailer I’ve seen so far.

Admittedly, however, I have not seen the highly-anticipated “Mario’s Wii Party Sports Waggle(Zelda) with Mario: THIS GAME’S GOT MARIO IN IT (zelda)” trailer yet.

  24. jon_hill987 says:

You know what this game is missing?

    On foot sections with QTEs.

  25. Turbobutts says:

One of the few game series where I’d say “DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING BUT THE GRAPHICS ABOUT IT BECAUSE IT IS PERFECT THE WAY IT IS!!!”. And it seems like they’re following my advice. Same sandbox puzzle tracks, same easy to learn but hard to master car handling but more of everything.

    I AM READY!

  26. MadTinkerer says:

    Oh my. MUST PREORDER.

  27. chelseascum says:

Wow, nearly half the entire trailer is logos and stuff. Worthwhile.

  28. Dachannien says:

Will it also have ludicrous DRM like their previous products had?
