RPS Asks: Game Servers?

By Jim Rossignol on June 10th, 2011 at 11:58 am.

Hello all. I keep having stabs at this, but right now we – the daily hivemind RPS types, rather than our excellent but unofficial Arma 2 and Minecraft communities – only have a TF2 server and a couple of Brink servers. We can probably get a bunch more going, but what? And why? And who? This will be a bit of a straw poll, of course, but let’s hear ideas and suggestions. The more outlandish the better, probably.

And yes, we should certainly have another Air Buccaneers revival before too long. We totally need a UT3 update for that mod, mod people.

  1. MiniMatt says:

    Bad Company 2 please.

Because (a) I’m all excited about shooting men on a Battlefield and that’s all YOUR fault. And (b) because I’m a bit crap and would like a friendly server where I can not feel quite so stupid when I ‘nade my own feet off.

    • Jim Rossignol says:

Yeah, we did have one of these. I’ll bring it back.

    • beloid says:

this. Plus it’s one popular manshooting game, and with the inevitable coming of BF3 some chaps might want to refresh their building destroying experience.

    • The Tupper says:

Cool – I was pretty late to the BFBC2 thingy and I’d love to have an RPS server in which to hide behind a wall while soiling my fatigues and crying for mummy.

    • BoZo says:

Please, please, please make it hardcore though.

    • godwin says:

NO to hardcore. The normal mode plays fine enough.

    • Jorum says:

BFBC2 would be great. I was a latecomer to it so another chance for a RPS server would be nice.
I’ve not played hardcore much, but I think standard mode plays fine as it is.

    • beloid says:

I find the hardcore mode to be easier, without the 3d spotting it is easier to hide and live longer that 2 seconds before you get shoot at from every possible angle.

    • Davee says:

Yea, no hardcore please. As much of a fanboy I am for Red Orchestra and ArmA, one-hit-kills only work in games where you can’t run, jump and gun like an idiot. BC2 is balanced for it’s normal mode, not hardcore.

But a BC2 server would be great non the less! I only re-discovered how much fun BC2 is yesterday (and Morrowind in anticipation of Skyrim). Need to work my skills up for BF3 too I suppose :)

Another Air Buccaneers event would be awesome too. Loved the last one (especially since I got to blast various RPS Hivemind overlords out of the sky).

    • Ogun says:

Another no for hardcore. It’s the weakest feature of the game and just highlights the problems with hit detection.

    • McDan says:

Then we blow up the wall! Love it when people forget we can blow up walls on there.

    • The Tupper says:

I promise you that if it’s hardcore people will just get mad at me. I’m rubbish.

    • The Hammer says:

      NO TO HARDCORE.

Caps Lock counts for two votes!

But no, seriously: I reckon Hardcore requires more than a strong, strong interest in the game; and while I like BC2 a lot, I doubt that, on the whole, RPS’s readership treats it as their core game.

Also, can I be the first to posit that the Vietnam add-on might be nice to have a server for, too? Hmmmm?

    • Spiny says:

So many good choices there, my top 3
      Bad Company 2
      Quake 3 (with RA3?)
      and not least Raven Shield*
      *
      Flash Out!

      Sorry :)

    • elbandito says:

No to No to hardcore pls.

In non-hardcore it takes hundreds of shots to kill anyone meaning that long distance shooting is pointless with non-snipers.

    • Fwiffo says:

Hardcore only serves to encourage lone wolf behaviour and makes my job as a medic a nightmare. No.

    • caesarbear says:

No hardcore. We can start a RO server as well perhaps.

    • Sinomatic says:

I’d prefer hardcore (as softcore seems to take far too many bullets to kill someone), but then I also quite like being able to spot folk. So I guess I’m saying I’d just be happy with having an RPS server at all, really.

    • Timofee says:

Pft! Hardcore, no snipers is where the fun is.

    • Nico_101 says:

      Agreed on this. Totally.

    • sebmojo says:

      SACRIFICE

    • Navagon says:

I’d also like to see a BC2 server. Not hardcore though as I haven’t actually played it online yet.

  2. Text_Fish says:

    “Mod of the Month”

Have a server that runs a different mod every month, to be decided by regular polls.

    • Anthile says:

I like this idea a lot.

    • Dyst says:

      This.

    • Ogun says:

^ this – you’ll need a basic Q3 server running to be able to play the best mods for the best game over.

    • Jubaal says:

I like this idea or at least “Game of the month”

    • Davee says:

      I fully support this idea!

    • JohnnyMaverik says:

This. Game of the month/Mod of the month/both, all are things I’d be all over in a shot.

Also Suicide Survival… not that anybody plays that prime example of source modding goodness any more, but hopefully they might if there was a server… idk, probably not, but we can all dream.

    • zeroskill says:

I support this idea. There are so many underpopulated, really great mods, especially HL and HL2 mods. BrainBread or Natural Selection for HL and Suicide Survival for HL2 :3

    • Screwie says:

      I love this idea.

    • HaZiLLa says:

      Yes this

    • OctaneHugo says:

      I love this idea!

    • DarkWeeble says:

      This.

    • Nico_101 says:

I like this idea a lot. Altough it is very difficult to carry out, specially after a few times once it looses its steam. Still worth a try.

  3. DevilSShadoW says:

does RPS run a vanilla TF2 server? I didn’t bother to check. If not then I’d love to get back into TF2 but without any of that horrid trading.

Maybe a killing floor server (if people still play that).

  4. cairbre says:

I’m with MiniMatt on this. Also there should be a special mention for those getting collecting staff dog tags. Jim I am coming for you.

Two man enter one man leave.

  5. Teddy Leach says:

    We are lovely and nic.

Bad Company 2 server, as suggested above, please!

  6. cytokindness says:

A game of Savage would be great.
    http://www.newerth.com/
32 player RTS from a first-person perspective, with one commander per team. Makes for epic battles galore.

    (Oh and it’s free!)

  7. GraveyardJimmy says:

Red Orchestra 2 on release perhaps? If its even just as good as the first one it will be incredible.

  8. WaveOfMutilation says:

For me it’s not any particular game that is of importance but the servers location.

Being situated in the in the former penal colony that is Australia means that playing any of the usual RPS servers just doesn’t work.

    • Sinomatic says:

I play with international types and we tend to get servers in the mid/west US. Yes there is some ping to contend with, but its usually playable…..so perhaps we should beg for some US-based RPS servers.

  9. Alexander Norris says:

You know what would be really nice?

A BF2142 server, with some RPSers who actually play given admin on it. There are quite a few people who play 2142 but not that many excellent servers, and being able to run and customise a server to our liking would mean there’s one more truly excellent server.

Also, donate to support the ArmA server, you miserly basts.

    • godwin says:

Isn’t the Arma server already paid for till January 2012 or something?

    • Stranglove says:

Well, the solid gold yacht isn’t gonna pay for itself!

    • GoldenPants says:

      BF2142, the best BF.

    • westyfield says:

I was just about to suggest a Battlefield 2142 server as well. Especially since my favourite 2142 server recently shut down.

    • Daiv says:

I would kill each and every one of you to have a decent 2142 server. Or failing that, something approximating Titan mode in BF3. For that I’d only maim you all.

  10. Carra says:

More TF2 events would be great. It’s empty most of the time :(

    • Malibu Stacey says:

Very much this. Getting people on the TF2 server is the first step. Getting them to come back requires decent server settings (I would recommend no crits & no random bullet spread but far too many people seem to like dying to randomness), decent map rotation & something resembling admins.

    • Sigh says:

Nah, no more of the Trade Fortress 2 please. It’s getting a bit long in the tooth.

  11. Limey says:

    Noughts and crosses.

  12. DainIronfoot says:

Red Orchestra? Avec mods? I haven’t played any RO mods yet and they all look good

    • GraveyardJimmy says:

You should definitely try out the RO mod called Darkest Hour. I think of it as Red Orchestra 1.5, lots of great features added (mantling walls, bipods for lmgs, mortars, smoke, different reloading systems).

If you need some people to play with check out the rps steam chat, we’ve recently started playing again.

  13. DeepSleeper says:

Could we get an Action HL2 server up maybe?

  14. Ogun says:

    These would be awesome:

BC2 – but need admins because it can be an easy game to grief people in.
AirBucs – but needs admins because it crashes fairly often.

And if there’s an AirBucs server, everyone has to promise not to tell Makaveli and the other old-schoolers for at least a couple of weeks. Was going to let them know about the last RPS one after I’d connected for a moment to check the server was up and running – then a cannonball and an insult came screaming through the fog from the other side of the map and I knew I didn’t need to.

  15. Jorum says:

OK this is gonna sound stupid but where would one find a list of current RPS servers for perusal?

    • CMaster says:

This as well. A “Play with us” page, with servers and list of times for events would be a nice idea.

    • liqourish says:

Oooh, this would be a very good idea. Could be a good way to get more people who don’t visit the forums/aren’t in the steam group.

  16. Hydrogene says:

I would love to try Air Buccaneers, it looks very original !
    Otherwise, probably Bad Company 2.

  17. Vandelay says:

Section 8: Prejudice, although I have feeling the server system for that is a bit weird.

Although not server suggestions, some special events could be fun. A readers versus the Hivemind SC2 games would be awesome (or whatevet RTS you guys play), as would Chaos Theory.

The mod of the month idea is brilliant too.

Edit: Oh, Jedi Knight duelling tourny!

    • Nullkigan says:

      @Vandelay

Confirming S8P is a pain in the rear end to set up. It needs a unique GWFL account for each instance of the server or some such.

Similarly, BFBC2, BF3, etc are locked down at the GSP level.

  18. James says:

This is kind of a vague idea, but if you’ve got the potential for a bunch of extra servers then maybe you could offer one or two for indies to test and/or market their multiplayer games? Maybe have the devs submit and then have the community vote on what to try?

Just a thought, don’t know if that’s at all what you were thinking.

edit: Pretty much what Text_Fish said above, sorry I can’t read.

  19. Raziel_aXd says:

Apparently no one here likes Crysis 2 MP, but how about it? And not 8v8 – because it’s horrible, no room for tactics or a bit of thinking. 4v4 and 6v6 would be awesome though. Cheers.

  20. jama says:

A Multiwinia server please, that game is in desperate need of a proper server (and more players!)

    • Recidivist says:

It’s like that because it’s a terrible game. Let it die.

    • Xocrates says:

It’s not a terrible game. However it’s horribly balanced for anything resembling “competitive” playing, so there really isn’t any point playing online unless you’re playing with friends.

  21. Binman88 says:

The game might be too old, but I’m gonna suggest Raven Shield. €10 a month for a 12 slot server from Multiplay.co.uk, stick it on co-op (max 8 players) with normal maps and go! Not much point paying for the slightly larger 16 slot server for 8v8 adversarial; the 12 slot server can always be turned into a 6v6 advers if required. Co-op/terrorist hunt would probably be the more approachable and popular mode to use anyway.

The game is always on sale on Steam, so there’s no problem with people getting a hold of it, but it is getting close to a decade in age. I still play it and love it, but I’m not sure everyone else would. If it was brought to RPS viewer’s attention though, I’m sure enough interest could be garnered to make it popular enough. I actually bought the “PCGamer presents” version back in 2005, and have played something close to 1500 hours of it since then, which I think is a decent testament to its quality.

I could administrate the server for you, as I’ve done so in the past when I rented one myself and when I was part of a clan. Of course, there’s a matter of trust and you wouldn’t want any old numpty representing RPS as an admin. I can only tell you that I would be a good choice because I’m sensible, not a jerk, and I’ve always respected other players, but I can see why you wouldn’t trust a randomer from the interweb. At the very least I could tell you the ideal settings to set before opening the server up.

  22. Yaheira says:

What about Mount & Blade Warband? Or one of its mods like Vikingr.

    • BoZo says:

      I second Vikingr.

      And DnF of course…

    • Wilson says:

      Yeah, Vikingr is great!

    • Andy_Panthro says:

Yes! I would love to play a bit of Warband multi.

Haven’t played Vikingr though, will have to check that out.

    • Davie says:

That would be excellent, and Vikingr is a good mod.

    • FKD says:

Oh good, I was hoping someone was going to mention M&B! I thought at one point RPS did have a server for it though? Or was that only around the time when it had just come out.. Anyway, I would like to be able to play with some people who (hopefully) will not make fun of me for how terrible I am! lol :/

  23. Nullkigan says:

A weekly post, plus a forum sticky, with a load of inline stats trackers (playercount, map, etc – those fancy images you find all over the web) would probably help. The passworded servers see hardly any use because nobody is on them so people go to find a populated server instead. Steam events help, but people tend to get annoyed if those are regularly put up. Servers without passwords are either more expensive, or get filled by non-rps people. Advanced reserved slots (kick when randoms when someone enters a special password that identifies them as a reader) are only available for a very small number of games.

Jim, do you want to enter the fray on the spare capacity of the ArmA server? I did email you about it a month ago or so, but never got a response.

  24. Kefren says:

AvP 1 or 2 (not the modern one, the old ones).
    HOMM 2 or 3.
    Earth 2150.

  25. CMaster says:

Something coopy would be nice. There was an (unoffical?) RPS killing floor server for a while, that was good. SWAT4 Stechkov 10 player coop? Synergy? L4D2? Alien Swarm?

    • Andy_Panthro says:

How about Firearms: Source (whenever it’s released)?
      http://firearms-source.com/
Not sure what the current (non-source) version of FA is though.
I used to play it quite a lot as an alternative to counter-strike.

turns out FA:S is released! on v1.0f gonna try it out now.

  26. The Hammer says:

How about Counter-Strike: Source? Tom Bramwell’s Gaming Made Me on that attracted me to playing again: partly because I miss that kind of pure, round-based tactical shooter.

It’s over half a decade old, very cheap on Steam, and is probably owned by a hefty chunk of the RPS readership anyway!

Plus, it’s a welcome break from all the RPG points scoring of contemporary multi-player man-shoots.

    • ankh says:

I second this. I keep on coming back to CS. Iron sights, perks, nukes, unbalanced gameplay all gone. Just like that.

    • Trousers says:

      3rd’d

However I mostly play Gun Game servers (upgrade to a new gun every kill, cycle through all the guns ending with nade then knife to win). It’s ridiculously fast paced with the instant respawns and whatnot.

Theres got to be some GG people lurking here

  27. Stuart Walton says:

How about a Freelancer server. And a Terraria one. And whatever the latest iteration of OpFlash/ARMA that supports a Capture the Island mod, one of those.

    • Nullkigan says:

CTI and warfare are built into the base game these days. Warfare BE (Benny Edition) is more widely popular, though.

    • Baconberries says:

Yeeaaahh Terraria. Although that may not be feasible until they expand the player limit…

  28. Tater Po says:

    Ace Of Spades!

    http://ace-spades.com/

    • Pinky G says:

I thought all the RPS players had left this game. Im PinkDozer btw, see you ingame.

  29. Stephen Roberts says:

Natural Selection One that evolves into Natural Selection 2 when it’s completed in 2013.

Oh who am I kidding, I’ve grown out of multiplayer versus.

    • mllory says:

This! Natural Selection is seven different kinds of fun on a full server. The full server part is sort of hard to do, though.

    • Jorum says:

      NATURAL SELECTION!
If you don’t know why we need one, then you need one (if you see what I mean)

  30. TheDreamlord says:

I am happy with the Brink servers, however a couple of times I logged in, noone was there. Are they still being used?

    • Sinomatic says:

I think more events to bring people in at the same time would be helpful.

    • TehJman says:

I think more events to brink people in at the same time would be helpful.

  31. Sal.Paradise says:

    In order of ascending outlandishness:
    1) Air Buccaneers
    2) SWAT 4
    3) The Specialists

    • CMaster says:

I’d rather see The Opera (Mook Aracde edition) to The Specialists personally.
      Classier.

    • Malibu Stacey says:

Action Half-Life 2 has a bigger chance of people playing it what with it being Source Engine 2009 based rather than a Half-Life 1 mod.

I’d love to try multiplayer SWAT 4 though.

    • RightOnTime says:

SWAT 4 would be ace in multiplayer. I can imagine a group of RPSers running round shouting ‘GET YOUR HANDS UP! ON THE GROUND!!’ at each other. How are the servers handled for it?

  32. Cooper says:

    Whatever the server hosts:

-Make more Steam group announcements for ad-hoc play-

Really. The TF2 server sits empty for weeks on end. Someone posts a RPS Steam Group announcement and we all pile in and have a good laff. Someone needs to do this for the Brink servers too…

It’s lovely to have special events organised via the main-page, but we need more ad-hoc shootouts.

If I’m told about some planned play-age via RPS I’ll forget when it is, or I’ll not factor it in and I’ll be out instead of at the computer. But I’ll happily fire up TF2, Brink, or grab and install Air Buc etc. as-and-when, if I happen to be in front of the computer when it’s about to happen. There’s enough people on the steam group to carry more regular occurences of ad-hoc shotty-bangs.

    • MikoSquiz says:

      Yes, this.

    • Vandelay says:

Except you have to be in front of the computer and logged into Steam to get these. A couple of times I’ve only spotted a Brink announcement an hour or so after it has begun and the server has been deserted already.

Random shoutouts for a game are nice, but regular organised times would be better.

  33. Dentist says:

We (Multiplay) can provide pretty much anything you guys in the community want. If you wanted us to take on the costs of hosting the ArmA2 server, that’s no problem either.

    • Nullkigan says:

Can you send me a PM on the forums? I’m busy right now but, we can talk about this later.

    • Unaco says:

It all depends, I suppose, if RPS and Multiplay are willing to accept and perhaps be associated with the War Crimes and Atrocities that regularly occur on the unofficial ARPS (ArmA) server. You must know that, in 10, maybe 15 years time, you could be answering questions in the (virtual) Hague.

It might be best, for all involved, if we keep the ARPS server separate, and unofficial. But Nullkigan would be the person to speak to.

Edit: Also, I should refresh before posting. Null beat me to it with the ‘speak to Null’ advice.

  34. toomany says:

I don’t suppose there’s enough convicts who tune into RPS for an Antipodean server? I get all these steam announcements for events but don’t bother because my lag is a bucket of shit.

  35. oceanclub says:

I am _so_ one for a game of Air Buccaneers. The last one was hilarious:

    P.

  36. FriendlyFire says:

I know it’s a bit atypical, but a Freelancer server would be a lot of fun. Since it’s more persistent you can have quite a bit of fun building yourself up on it and make new friends. Most Freelancer servers still around these days have deep communities.

You could also delve into mods, there are some incredible ones. If you’d need help for it, I’d also be more than willing to provide anything you might need.

  37. DanDee says:

I’m in despair! The fact that I missed the first revival of Air Buccaneers has left me in despair!

So make the new server for it real soon. Do it fer me, RPS, and I will lurv you. :3

  38. JerreyRough says:

Perhaps a Shores of Hazeron Empire for readers to take part in?

  39. calpin says:

Shattered Horizon, why has this game been allowed to die?

  40. otzenGulasch says:

RA3, you know you want to, Jim!

  41. DBG says:

I also would like to see more action on TF2 server. It’s always empty when i loot at it

  42. 8-bit says:

altitude anyone? football is pretty much all anyone plays anymore and its a lot of fun even in short bursts. shattered horizon, plain sight and killing floor are games I own but have never really been able to play due to low number of players and I know a lot of people played and enjoyed the plain sight get together the other week.

  43. DarkNoghri says:

Heh, I guess I’ll stop toying with the idea of uninstalling Air Buccs then. That’ll stay on until we get to play again, or I reformat, I guess. Whichever comes first.

  44. Sinomatic says:

Wasn’t there a notion at some point to have a server with games on rotation? Smaller/less populated games (like plain sight) that might not warrant a permanent server, but would be great to have up for a week or two at a time. I suppose it would require a lot more messing around with the servers, but I imagine you’d get more players on them that way. Also, if something proved immensely popular, a more permanent solution could be sought.

  45. Synesthesia says:

    wait.
    you have a minecraft server?
    Where do i get whitelisted?

  46. RightOnTime says:

Thanks to my web-hosting guru mate, I have a dedicated Garrys Mod server running which rarely gets any use….
I’d be happy to turn it into a not-quite-official RPS server if anyone fancies some daft physics fun?

    Yrs faithfully,

    • man-eater chimp says:

An RPS game of Trouble in Terrorist Town? Fantastic. I am definitely in favour of this.

SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THE COMMENTS POWERS THAT BE

    • RightOnTime says:

      Hell yeah!

Prop Hunt is always a laugh, and Sledbuild can be highly entertaining with a full server. I could probably fiddle about to make it automatically change the gamemode every hour or so – if people don’t fancy a good ole’ build session.

  47. DarkWeeble says:

Tribes: Next, Tribes: ReVengence, Eternal Silence or Dystopia for Source! It would be cool to have a server that rotates free/off the beaten track mods and games once in a while. I think it might be important to have a Steam group for the server to ping members for players. Someone did suggest a Mod of the Month server and this is just a little more specific instance of it.

  48. VFRHawk says:

Not directly about this, but are any of you in World of Tanks clans? Hows there world conquering meta-game? Like the idea, but I’m still only in a level 2 light tank so probably not ready to join in yet.

Sorry to go a bit off-topic.

    Graham

    • RightOnTime says:

I played it all through the beta and got addicted, especially around levels 3-6, but the launch proper was a real kick in the nuts – you can’t do something so basic as team up with your mates without spending real cashmoney.

A clan might actually be worthwhile, but you’d need a pretty solid group of 20 or so people to make it worthwhile.

    • Torgen says:

as far as the clan world conquest: Go T10 or go home.

Well, maybe a couple of the nicer T9s as well. But that’s it.

  49. jaheira says:

Something that isn’t co-op. I’m all for killing you guys in the face, but most of these suggestions would require me to “co-ordinate” with you, or even “team up”. Yuck.
