Eh? Crysis 2 Steam Axe “Not an EA decision”

By Alec Meer on June 15th, 2011.

Yeah, me too

THINGS ARE GETTING REALLY STRANGE NOW. Now being outside of UK office hours mean we’re yet to get our own EA response to why Crysis 2 vanished from Steam yesterday, but across-the-ponders have now received one. The upshot? Despite all this ‘only on Origin’ stuff, EA didn’t do it. So: who did?

New Lulzsec Attacks On WoW, Newerth, Eve

By Alec Meer on June 15th, 2011.

Yesterday’s denial of service attacks on Minecraft, Eve Online and League of Legends do not appear to be the end of hacker collective Lulzsec’s attempts to force online games offline. Heroes of Newerth’s login server was named a victim around an hour ago, shortly followed by the group declaring its intention to target Eve again tonight. That may of course be a double-bluff, but keep it in mind if you’re intending to play tonight.

Then, just moments ago, they stated that they were now rerouting calls to their ‘requests’ phone number to World of Warcraft’s customer support line. They claim their line, alleged by some to be a premium rate number, receives between 5 and 20 calls a second at present. Whether this signals an impending attack on WoW itself remains to be seen, but the group currently appear to be focusing efforts on phone rerouting.

Getting Pist: Video Of Minecraft 1.7′s Pistons

By Quintin Smith on June 15th, 2011.

I'm posting it! No need to get pushy.

Notch has released a video of the pistons that’ll feature in Minecraft update 1.7, aka the Adventure Update. I’m well aware that this only barely scrapes into the category of “news”, but then I realised how easy it would be to come up with a headline pun and that was that.

Besides, after watching this video I’m now convinced that I (finally) want to start fannying around with elaborate redstone circuity. Just look at this.

It’s War: EA’s “Own Platform Exclusives”

By Alec Meer on June 15th, 2011.

Dance! Dance the propreitary download platform dance of death!

While the waters around Crysis 2′s sudden disappearance from Steam last night remain somewhat muddy, EA Games prez Frank Gibeau has spilled a few heavily suggestive beans about the big brass balls the publisher has about its proprietary download service, Origin, and how it intends to keep any other download service’s grubby mitts off a few of its choicest games.

Ballsy: Proun Will Be Pay What You Want

By John Walker on June 15th, 2011.

I might not be able to play for just staring at it.

You may remember Proun, the puzzle racing game we first mentioned in 2009. The one with that blisteringly pretty trailer. The good news is, it’s out later this month, on the 24th. The better news is, it’s pay what you want. There’s an exclusive look at the new trailer below.

Wot I Think: Red Faction Armageddon

By John Walker on June 15th, 2011.

No hub? Are you mad?

Volition’s Red Faction: Armageddon has been out for a few days, surprising many with the direction it’s taken for its hammer/magnet based destruction. Having smashed every last thing from beginning to end, I’m now in a position to tell you Wot I Think.

Dungeon Siege 3 Advert Is What I Don’t Even

By Quintin Smith on June 15th, 2011.

i mean maybe they were thinking that the no wait what

Dungeon Siege III has some of the noisiest visuals I’ve ever seen in an RPG. I’ve made fun them before. What, then, is a good solution when you want to advertise the game on a television?

Square Enix came up with a solution. A million thanks to RPS reader João “Mellow” Melo for sending this in.

Celestica: Crystal Towers 2

By Quintin Smith on June 15th, 2011.

An official Crystal Castles game could only be horrible, of course

This one goes out to all of you who didn’t think I should have posted about New Super Mario Bros. 3 down there. Mike Rose of that inpenetrable bunker of good taste the Indie Games blog just dropped me an email about Crystal Towers 2, a platformer inspired by 90s platformers that’s also a PC game in everything from its pricing plan to its gently sardonic script. You can grab the free edition (which offers some 15% of the game) here, and watch a trailer and browse my dainty collection of impressions after the jump.

Crysis 2 Pulled From Steam?

By Alec Meer on June 15th, 2011.

METAPHOR

“Where were you when the war began, Daddy?”
“Well, little Ignatius H. Meer III, I was at my PC, staring vacantly at Twitter. Probably eating some crisps as I did. I’ll never forget that dark, terrible day. The day that EA decided they could fight Steam.”
“Daddy? Why are you crying, Daddy?”

Crysis 2 has disappeared from Steam, and is now described as being “Origin only.” Origin is, you may recall, EA’s newly-relaunched download store. Uh-oh.

There’s Also: Collapse: Devastated World

By Jim Rossignol on June 15th, 2011.

Fight, big man, fight!
Collapse: Devastated World is, as you might well be able to guess from the name, a game about post-apocalyptic shootbangs action. It might also be a good name for a kind of real-world Jenga sim, where you go around pulling out important bits of large buildings, but that’s not what this is about. Instead it’s about a large man, who is armed with swords and guns, and a “mysterious” apocalypse into which he must wade, weapons akimbo, to save humanity from certain unpleasantness.

The game is being developed by Ukrainian chaps Creoteam, and will be published by UTV Ignition in 2012 (it appears to have come out several years ago in CIS countries). The trailer below is extensive, and all game footage. It shows melee action – including some interest-stirring one-on-one duels – gun action, bullet time, boss fights, and a bunch of other stuff. We don’t get a lot of third-person action games on PC right now, but this one looks like it’ll be making up some ground.
