Heavily Engaged: Grognard Guilt

By Tim Stone on June 6th, 2011.

No battle reportage this week. Rather than confuse you with another tale of how Easy Company went east then north a bit then left a bit while Baker Company went west then south then right a bit, I thought I’d try to get to the bottom of a feeling that has gnawed at the edges of my wargaming pleasure for the best part of 30 years. That feeling could be described as unease, or perhaps, disquiet. At a stretch you might even call it guilt.

COD Elite: The Free, The Paid & The Hmm

By Alec Meer on June 6th, 2011.

NUMBERS. How much would you pay for even more of 'em?

Call of Duty Elite, the social networking/clan-organising thingy for COD multiplayer, got a whole lot of backs up when it was unveiled the other week – the prevailing, Chinese-whispered sense being that we’d be expected to fork out to get the full CoD multiplayer experience. With the waters very much muddied, Activision seem to be in fire-fighting mode – now explicitly stating just what will be free. Activision also reckon that “we believe that the free elements of Call of Duty Elite will be superior to any free service currently on the market.”

Oh, and they just called you a hater.

Smash It Up: Citadel Wars Released

By Jim Rossignol on June 6th, 2011.

Goblins means prizes! Probably.
Crikey, I am not sure how I missed this previously! Firewhirl Entertainment send word that their new game, Citadel Wars, has just been released, and it looks like a checklist of things that should be a fun time. It’s a mixture of “RTS, Tower Defense and FPS”, all set within “a totally destructible environment”. That means battling swarms of ork-like creeps with magic, bows, and other fantasy weapons. The cartoony trad fantasy theme might not exactly be fresh, but it’s looking appropriate and pretty tidy – and destructible! I’m downloading the full thing at the moment, so I’ll let you guys know a bit more when I’ve had time to play it, but you don’t need to wait for my thoughts because there’s a demo, and also a peculiarly self-deprecating trailer which I’ve posted below.

Odd.

The Postal III Trailer Is Interesting

By Jim Rossignol on June 6th, 2011.

Yes.
I originally typo’d “Portal 3 trailer”. Imagine if this was the Portal 3 trailer.

It’s the Postal III trailer. NSFW.

Will Wright’s Sterling Stuff

By Alec Meer on June 6th, 2011.

Staring eyes - of genius, madness, or just lens flare?

Increasingly nebulous mega-brain Will Wright has finally revealed what the hell he’s up to next. He’s spent his post-Spore years working at an outfit he calls Stupid Fun Club, which has had all sorts of wild ideas about TV shows and toys, but now he seems to be turning those historically ingenious eyes back to games.

He’s working on adapting a short story about a karmic computer, by sci-fi writer and technology ponderer Bruce Sterling, and he reckons he can get it turned around within a year.

Red River To Enter “Valley Of Death”

By Jim Rossignol on June 6th, 2011.

Red sky at night, DEATH DEATH DEATH.
Operation Flashpoint: Red River is going to get an eight-mission DLC pack in “late June”. The DLC pack is called VALLEY OF DEATH. All eight missions support single-player and co-op modes of play, and cover all the various game modes. Codies say: “Two new Combat Sweep missions, two new CSAR missions, two new Last Stand missions and two new Rolling Thunder missions are set across stunning new locales.” The action will apparently take place in the factories of a former-Soviet city and an adobe village in a large valley. OF DEATH.

The First Hitman: Absolution Screens

By Jim Rossignol on June 6th, 2011.

Are they screens, or are they “target renders”? I’ve blatantly pinched them from Eurogamer and posted them below so that you can decide.

Desktop Dungeons Is All Growed Up

By Alec Meer on June 6th, 2011.

Tiny, pretty things. Kill 'em all!

One of the best games of last year, the 10-minute puzzle-RPG Desktop Dungeons, is getting ready to dress up in daddy’s clothes. It began life as a freeware indie gem, but now devs QCF quite understandably want to make some money from their creation (unfortunately, someone else already did). They’re taking preorders for the new, improved, embiggened, super-flash ‘full’ version. Why would you want to pay for something that’s already free? Let’s read!

Status Updates & News Trumpets

By RPS on June 5th, 2011.

Hello! You will notice that there have been a few changes to comments and also to the forums. These are part of an ongoing redesign that is taking place thanks to the tireless work of Mr Sutcliffe and Positive Internet. The site should begin to be faster, and have more functionality for you. There’s so much more to do, but it’ll happen gradually, so you guys need to keep giving us that feedback – we require and appreciate it. The best place for feedback is this folder on the forum.

Also, this coming week we’re going to have a crack at getting the best out of an E3 that looks to be big for PC – you can follow all the E3-specific content on this tag. It’s also worth following our Twitter account for additional notifications and newsbits.

Finally, you’ll notice that we’re doing our best to flag up feature content. There will also be far more feature content on the whole in the coming months, because the site is now really hitting its stride. Hopefully we’ll do more of the kind of things that you’ve been asking for, like sending Quinns down a mine. Thanks for your heroic reading, and hopefully you’ll get to see RPS become the site we all hoped it would be when we started all those years ago. A particular thanks goes to the subscribers, who recently bought us an additional server. You guys are okay.

Major League Gaming: Final Day!

By Jim Rossignol on June 5th, 2011.

Major League Gaming‘s Pro Circuit Starcraft 2 matches are coming to a close in Columbus this weekend, and we’ve got the livestreams embedded below. You can watch what both players are doing at the same time. Both streams will play, so you’ll want to mute one of them, I should think! Head down there for top-level SC2 play with some decent commentary.
