Capcom Change SSFIV:AE DRM

By Jim Rossignol on June 2nd, 2011.

FIGHT!
I do believe that is the longest abbreviation I have ever put in a headline. But still not as long as the one Lewie used in the original story about this issue. The news should be clear, however: Capcom have announced some substantial changes to their original DRM plan for the PC version of Super Streetfighter IV’s Arcade Edition. Christian Svensson writes:

Shortly after launch (it might even be at launch, but we’ll see how submission timing and approval goes) we will roll out a small title update that will completely remove the character limitations for offline mode. That is to say, once you’ve updated, you will be able to use all 39 characters when not connected to the Internet to practice your combo timings, have some fun with a friend on a laptop, or whatever while offline.

So that’s different. It’s not too surprising either, given Svensson’s apparent attention to PC as a format.

Hellgate Closed Beta Starts Tomorrow

By Jim Rossignol on June 2nd, 2011.

Well, they’re calling it closed, but it looks like anyone can sign up, and they’re also offering the client download on the main site (and mirrors) for anyone to download. Anyway, this means the return of the long-dead action-RPG in a free-to-play guise. Will it work? Do we even care? I guess we’ll find out pretty soon!

A Smurf In Terraria: Part One

By John Walker on June 2nd, 2011.

But when will they add double jump?

It’s always a special moment when a game grips you. And those special moments are becoming increasingly frequent in this beautiful new world of procedurally generated, emergent, single-player epics. I nearly didn’t click with Terraria. Now the clicking is deafening, and I want to play little else. So here’s an introduction to my intention to spend an awful lot of time with this one.

The Darkness 2 Trailer Puts Nails In

By Jim Rossignol on June 2nd, 2011.

Hmm, that smarts.
It has started. The flood of E3 trailers has begun. Below you can watch the first in-game trailer for The Darkness 2, which features people being brutally evisecarated by black tentacles. There’s also a lovely scene where the protagonist is being nailed to a door or something. It’s not pleasant. Fortunately I’ve also embedded a video of a cat cuddling a sleeping kitten, just in case you require an antidote to seeing metal spikes being hammered through your hands.

The small print on the label reads 'Come get some on your face!' Just fyi

Prej Your Allegiance: Sect 8 Prejudice Update

By Quintin Smith on June 2nd, 2011.

Fancy meating you here.

After the RPS Hivemind failed to get everything we were hoping for from Brink, there was a collective sense that we should instead spend some quality time with the more bombastic Section 8: Prejudice. We haven’t actually done that yet, but this weekend’s looking like a great time to start. The game’s just received a patch balancing and smoothing things out (full notes here), and to celebrate the release of the Overdrive map pack this weekend will see players earning double XP. Overdrive details and trailer after the jump.

Pork Chop: Super Meat Boy In Choplifter HD

By Quintin Smith on June 2nd, 2011.

Fancy meating you here.

In one of the odder cameos of recent memory, developers inExile have confirmed that Meat Boy (of Super Meat Boy) will be appearing in Choplifter HD, their upcoming “reimagining” of 1982 title Choplifter. Why? Well, why not? But wait, there’s more! The new trailer you’ll find after the jump shows that Choplifter HD will also boast zombies that’ll eat VIPs and cling to your helicopter. That’s innovation, right there.

Handbags: Activision And EA Don’t Get On

By John Walker on June 2nd, 2011.

If only we could afford an art editor.

Oh, you two. I’m unsure whether the endless spat between two of the world’s biggest games publishers is healthy. With Activision currently occupying the coveted Most Hated spot at the top of the publishing ladder, once so impressively held by EA, you can see why there’s rivalry. “We’ve sacked another entire dev team! Take that!” “Well then! We’re going to cancel a game people were really looking forward to!” And so on. Currently the battle is over the world-dominating presence of Call Of Duty, and EA’s belief that plucky Battlefield can depose it. Slap! Pinch!

Watched Like A Hawk: Hawken Dev Diary

By Quintin Smith on June 2nd, 2011.

It's actually just a game about commuting in London

Is there a game in development that looks prettier than mech combat title Hawken? Perhaps not, which is remarkable, seeing as this is an indie game being assembled by no more than ten guys. Go, ten guys! I might not be entirely sold on your game’s combat mechanics, but so long as you keep sticking apartment blocks in the sky I will love you.

After the jump you’ll find a developer diary talking about the team’s “design goals”. which rather plays down the game’s visuals to talk about the game proper. It’s a bit like going to dinner with a supermodel only for her to keep talking about how she doesn’t like regenerative health and so on. Which doesn’t sound so bad, actually. What am I whinging about?

Below is the trailer for a first-person shooter videogame, just like they used to make in the old days. It looks awesome.

Batman Means Cat-Biff

By Jim Rossignol on June 1st, 2011.

Combat yoga
It’s true. Looks like the chaps and chaplets of Gamespot got their hands on Batman: Arkham City for some caped fun times, because there’s a trailer doing the rounds. It’s new. It’s below. It shows Catwoman.

She’s playable, apparently. I want to come up with some kind of ultimate innuendo, but it’s late. I’m sorry.
