Not exactly a surprise, because we’re the geniuses who called it earlier in the week. Valve have made Team Fortress 2 free to play. The future is free.

Announcement trailer below.

Freaky: Killing Floor’s Summer Sideshow

By Jim Rossignol on June 23rd, 2011.

The guys at Tripwire have sent word that they’re going to be doing another Killing Floor novelty map event, like they did for last Christmas, only this time it’s a “Summer Sideshow”. What that means is they’ve poured their mapping talents into creating a grotesque freakshow, complete with ‘orrible circus variants of Killing Floor’s hideous mutants, and new unlockables and achievements. You can check them out in the trailer below. More details on the site.

It’ll be arriving on Steam, and the event will from June 30th to July 22nd. (Also I recall Killing Floor being a popular option for an RPS server. Any +1s to that?)

L.A. Noire: What It Could Mean On PC

By Jim Rossignol on June 23rd, 2011.

Dammit, Sergeant! PC gaming is *dead*, and I mean to find out who's responsible!
So what should PC gamers expect from L.A. Noire? Well, for a start they should expect a strange hybrid of a point adventure game, a GTA-free roaming driving game with on-foot pursuits and shoot-outs, all hung on an arduous, sometimes perplexing interrogation game. But what else? And what could be fixed? What should be fixed? And what about Red Dead Redemption?

There’s lots of things to think about.

Billions Of Stars: Hoshi Saga 6

By John Walker on June 23rd, 2011.

If you don't find these lovely, then I think you're a fartface.

Gosh, can it really be over a year since I posted a Nekogames Hoshi Saga game? I do not understand the passing of time. Fortunately I do understand how to find stars in 25 simple but lovely microgames. I mean, I should, I’d already completed 125 of them. Bringing it up to 150 is Hoshi Saga Ringeon, and it’s as worth playing as all previously. Still too simple for the most part, but always engaging and satisfying to hear that ‘pling!’ as each is solved. You really ought to bloody well listen to me and go play them. I won’t stop posting about them until you do.

Space Waif: Solar 2 Is What I Like

By B Caldwell on June 23rd, 2011.

My foreign policy is always war.
Three wise men once said, “Intergalactic, planetary. Planetary, intergalactic.” I think we all take solace from those words at some points in our life. For are we not all made of star stuff? Solar 2 is built on this species of Saganian wisdom. Coupled with some delightful planetary physics and a dash of good humour, it’s probably the best time you can have alone with a heavenly body. Um. That’s not what I mean. Um. Um.

Pre-Order Skyrim, Get “Premium Quality Map”

By Quintin Smith on June 23rd, 2011.

You're looking at The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, there, biggest and sluttiest of all the Elder Scrolls games

VG24/7 have reported an announcement from Bethesda that pre-order customers of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will come with a “Premium quality map” (presumably of the game world, rather than Ireland or somewhere). What with the endemic loathing of pre-order bonuses in this industry, I’m guessing that this is going to cause a good deal of conflicted soul-searching, and what makes it even worse is that while Morrowind had one of the greatest paper maps of all time, the paper map that was released for Oblivion was both colourless and useless. What will we be getting with Skyrim? We just don’t know.

EDIT: OK, we do know a bit. VG24/7 just updated their story with a picture of the map, with copies of Skyrim balanced annoyingly on top. Click through the jump to see it. Also, to see how the PC version is at the back. Boo!

Arma 2 Free, OpFlash Renamed, Kinda Free

By Jim Rossignol on June 23rd, 2011.

TANKS FOR NOTHING.
UPDATE: Get Arma II for free here. That means you can play in multiplayer, but not Operation Arrowhead.

According to the releases that have just popped up from BIS, Arma II is available for free, while OpFlash has been renamed for future release. Sadly, they do seem to be jumping the gun somewhat, as the download links are not actually live on the site in question. When the links do appear, you’ll be able to get a version Arma II, minus the single player campaign, minus fancy graphics, but with all the awesome multiplayer and editor stuff, for nowt. Hell, we might just have to run some “Arma II 4 Nowt” RPS evenings so that some of you who haven’t yet tasted the pungent, leathery-yet-addictive taste of hard simulation can find out what it’s all about.

Coming And Göring: Panzer Corps Dated

By B Caldwell on June 23rd, 2011.

Snow off.
Alas, my headline puns can never beat Quinns’. But never mind that. Panzer Corps, Slitherine’s homage to hexagonal, historical Herr Hitler simulator Panzer General, is due to be released July 11, it’s been revealed. At this point I would like to apologise for the absurd amount of H in the preceding sentence. Would you like some quite dull-looking but probably very unrepresentative screenshots? Go on. There’s tanks.

DeathSpank With A Side Of: The Baconing

By John Walker on June 23rd, 2011.

Hothead Games, sans Ron Gilbert, have released the first visual details of their next game, The Baconing. Which is of course a DeathSpank game. But oddly one that absolutely does not mention DeathSpank in the title. Here DeathSpank tries on all his underwear at once, which as we all know summons an evil version of yourself, in his case the AntiSpank. And they say that gaming is immature. There’s pics and a trailer below.

Half-Half-Half-Half-Half-Elves: TinyHack

By Quintin Smith on June 23rd, 2011.

I'm naming my first child Pixel, just fyi

So there I am, playing dungeon crawling browser game Legends of Yore on the request of a couple of RPS fans, and I’m thinking to myself- “This isn’t very interesting, is it? I’m a bit bored. I wonder if the IndieGames Blog has a dungeon crawling browser game with a little more to it?”

Of course it does. Say hello to TinyHack. An entire, tiny, randomised RPG played on a field of 9×9 pixels.
