Petroglyph’s take on the “Multiplayer Online Battle Arena“, which is called Rise Of The Immortals, has now entered an open-beta stage. That means that you can play this free to play game for free. Uh, so that’s good. Anyway, sign up here if you’re interested, and take a look at the footage from the closed beta (below) for a glimpse of what awaits you within its warm, free, digital folds.

Oh look, a dota clone!

That’s what MOBAs are.
07/07/2011 at 11:20 DK says:
They’re really not. Two entirely different genres (neither of which Rise of the Immortals actually belongs to), with very little in common.
07/07/2011 at 11:25 Melf_Himself says:
Yes, very little in common. Other than being names for the exact same thing.

@DK – Someone needs to update the Wikipedia page, then, I guess: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplayer_Online_Battle_Arena
Any specialist in the differences to do it?
07/07/2011 at 16:41 Pamplemousse says:
That’s kinda like saying:
Call of Duty is a clone of Doom
Supreme Commander is a clone of Warcraft 3
TF2 is a clone of Team fortress classic.
Now, I’ve played all of these games, and I know the differences between them and how their genre has developed as a game form. I have also played far to much LoL, and little RotI and DoTA, and there are some real significant differences between them. However, these are quite a bit more subtle to the onlooker than say, the differences between Supreme Commander and Warcraft 3, but are still just as important.

I only read “Risen” and was terrified to see a mech in Risen 2. Phew.
07/07/2011 at 11:08 Hoaxfish says:
Wow, that’s really really uninteresting… especially if that’s all you can think of for your trailer.
07/07/2011 at 11:08 vivlo says:
i loled at their keywords so drramatically highlighted in this video : “free to play…team base..multiplayer…online…battle…arena…MOBA”. And then a “victory” screen. Soooo very original. but duno eh, maybe a good moba, though seems sooo very original.
07/07/2011 at 12:40 Zakkeh says:
Not a great game, but it has some interesting ideas others might borrow. You can upgrade items and each ‘Immortal’ is an in-game avatar, and new people throwing skill ideas around is always good
07/07/2011 at 11:16 LlamaNL says:
It’s hard to put in to words just how bad this game is. The controls are so clumsy, the graphics are absolutely terrible and the way the ‘f2p’ bit is handled is appalling. Give this a WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE berth!
07/07/2011 at 11:23 Cerzi says:
More people should come and play Bloodline Champions, the F2P game that isn’t dota and has a respectable microtransaction system (no in-game advantages for spending money), instead of fueling these endless dota clones.
Seriously, it’s really really good.
07/07/2011 at 11:37 Evilpigeon says:
If only this game wasn’t League of Legends except with terrible champion design and none of the extra stats or increased build freedom that makes it worth playing as opposed to an inferior version of dota…
07/07/2011 at 12:09 KaL_YoshiKa says:
This is true, if you want a good copy of DoTA get HoN (or maybe wait for Valve’s game). If you want a good MOBA with a few different spins try LoL. If you want to cut out the early and mid game skipping right to the end try Bloodline Champions.
There is literally no place for RoTI especially since it’s so bad – was playing the closed beta, it’s just bland.
07/07/2011 at 12:11 DerShcraa says:
Good champion design doesn’t really help if roughly 1/3 of the skills are somehow bugged.
Or has it changed since i left 3 months ago?
This statement goes for LoL.
07/07/2011 at 12:26 Koozer says:
DerShcraa, I think that was a dream.
07/07/2011 at 20:36 Thants says:
There’s never been a point at which 1/3 of the skills were bugged. In LoL, I mean.
07/07/2011 at 12:51 paterah says:
This game is the worst MOBA game I have ever touched. The art design is one of the worst if not the worst I’ve seen in the video game industry, same goes for the gameplay which if I understand correctly tries to somehow mimic LoL’s but fails horribly.
07/07/2011 at 13:14 Sinnorfin says:
Its a shame Petroglyph did this.. Just tried and its a pure ripoff of LOL. But buggy and ugly..
07/07/2011 at 13:34 DK says:
How is anyone surprised Petroglyph delivered yet another horrible product? They haven’t done anything worthwhile since they were formed and every single game they’ve made has only shown they think game design hasn’t changed since 1995.
07/07/2011 at 14:43 P4p3Rc1iP says:
While I thought Universe at War had some interesting concepts, that too was nothing great. This just looks terrible.
What happened to these people? Weren’t they once Westwood, the almighty studio behind the C&C series?
07/07/2011 at 16:28 nomilarac says:
If only they (someone) fixed (for real) Demigod connectivity/stability problems and rerelease it for free, or make a proper sequel, that would be a DOTA spin-off very much worth playing.
Most strategically deep, with the better designed “heroes” of all the “MOBA” games, its such a pity GPG and StarDock couldn’t live up to the diamong in rough they had in heir hands.
07/07/2011 at 17:10 Carados says:
Imagine League of Legends where every champion needs to be leveled seperately.
Yeah, this game is terrible, best of luck to everyone.
