Relic Detail Delicious Ulthwe DLC Pack

By Jim Rossignol on July 19th, 2011.

Mmm, too good to miss.
Ooh, I missed this last week, but PCG posted a helpful link: there’s going to be an Ulthwe Eldar DLC for Dawn Of War 2, and Relic have been busy showing off some of the models for it. I am seldom a sucker for such things, but I must admit (and don’t tell anyone else about this) to having a huge Ulthwe army of actual miniatures. Yes, the spooky space elves are to me as skaven are to Gillen. I’m sorry, but it’s true. And that means I’m going to have to have this DLC, too. Collector impulse decides for me. And, well, a man has to have some dubious pleasures if life is going to be interesting. We can’t all smoke crack.

UPDATE: Crikey, I didn’t realise it was £5. Crack it is!

Impressions: Wyv & Keep

By Alec Meer on July 19th, 2011.

It's like the Goonies, but with real dwarves

Can you hear that? No, listen more closely. Tune out those noisy thoughts of yours. What do you hear?

Exactly. The sound and fury of big-name game releases is on its annual Summer holiday, and the resultant quiet means us shy and retiring PC types can settle down contentedly with a fine crop of indie games for a month or two. Let’s turn our fond attention next to Wyv & Keep: The Temple of the Lost Idol, a puzzle-sorta-platformer that looks like Spelunky and plays a little like olden Blizzard gem The Lost Vikings. Only more fiendish.

Dots of War… Supreme Ruler: Cold War

By Richard Cobbett on July 19th, 2011.

Hey, I can see my house from up here. And nuke yours. So watch it!

Giving me control over either the US or USSR in the middle of the Cold War would probably be a bad idea. Not only am I the worst RTS player in the history of the universe, I just don’t think I’d be able to resist the temptation of launching a few nukes to see if I could draw a big smiley face in the middle of Utah. If you’ve got the patience and tactical thinking required to take the job on though, Paradox’s Supreme Ruler: Cold War is out today. Very scary trailer follows.

Write Graffiti For Serious Sam 3: BFE

By John Walker on July 19th, 2011.

I'm going to be the winner.

A rather silly email appears alerting us to the shock news that Croteam’s Lead In-Game Wall Graffiti Artist, Davor Kovač, has quit the company midway through the development of Serious Sam 3: BFE, “to pursue his dream of being quoted in a rushed press release”. So now the team are asking players to come up with the nonsense that will appear on the game’s walls.

Arma 2: The Player News Report

By Jim Rossignol on July 19th, 2011.

It doesn't end well.
I don’t know why I am surprised to see Arma 2 players effectively role-playing in their game, but it was still a bit strange to watch this video (below). It’s a bunch of footage shot by a “cameraman” as he and a reporter accompany the chaps from UKTF clan in their patrols on the game. They get ambushed, obviously, and plenty of dodgy-voice acting and life-threatening excitement ensues. Get through the first couple of minutes and it actually becomes pretty tense and exciting. Good job, those men.

Relatedly, if you an Arma 2 fancier, why not join our Arma 2 community?

Red Grockets Where? A New TF2 Mystery

By Alec Meer on July 19th, 2011.

Calling it: Pyro is Marvin the Martian

Another mystery is why it just took me five tries to spell ‘mystery’ correctly. A better msytery is why some new and rather large new scenery objects have started showing up in selected Team Fortress 2 maps. They look like rocket ships, or possibly just rockets – but what do they mean? I put ‘mean’ in italics there, so it would sound like I was whining like a pitiful child who wants everything nownownow. Did it work?

Rapture In Paper: The Bioshock Novel

By Richard Cobbett on July 19th, 2011.

No, the table doesn't magically change. Trick of the light. Move along....

Timing-wise, the long-in-development Bioshock prequel novel couldn’t have landed at a worse one. Remember Rapture? That’s right. It’s the place that was so awesome, before we were blown away by Columbia a few weeks ago. In the mood to return? There’s the rub…

Shock: Call Of Juarez – The Cartel PC Delayed

By John Walker on July 19th, 2011.

Us on our way to Ubi's HQ.

You know what would be a surprise? If Ubisoft, right, had a release date for a new game on all formats, yeah? But then – okay – at the eleventh hour announced that the PC version was going to be delayed! Imagine it! Because yes, yet again, Ubi have pulled the same tiresome trick with Call Of Juarez: The Cartel. Now the game – which was to be just about the only major release in July on PC – has slipped to the 16th September. We’ve contacted Ubisoft to find out why this keeps happening to their PC games, and will let you know their response. The consoles still get the game this Friday. In its absence, you can watch the first twenty minutes of the game, via CVG, below.

Exclusive! Size Five’s New Game: The Swindle

By John Walker on July 19th, 2011.

This is a game's name in a picture on a website.

RPS is very pleased to be the first place to announce the name and details of Size Five‘s (formerly Zombie Cow) new game. It is called The Swindle, and creator Dan Marshall describes it as a steampunk cybercrime caper.

Following on from RPS favourites Ben There, Dan That! and Time Gentlemen, Please!, as well as Channel 4′s willy-based Privates, The Swindle is the first game to be announced since the studio changed its name. And what exactly is a steampunk cybercrime caper. Size Five explain that to us, below, along with the first ever screenshots.

Wot I Think: Dungeons of Dredmor

By Alec Meer on July 19th, 2011.

Indie roguelike Dungeons of Dredmor arrived on Steam late last week, quickly summoning a swarm of interest around it despite coming pretty much out of nowhere. More proof, perhaps, that big publishers’ claims that the age of turn-based gaming is done and dusted are wanton foolishness.

Anyway! I’ve been playing Dredmor pretty much constantly since release. I couldn’t pretend to have beaten it – and it’s very possible I’ll never be able to – but here’s what I make of it.
