You see what I was going for in that headline, right? Alec likes Transformers, and space stuff? And shooting? Right? Okay, well, anyway, the chaps at DoubleSix games send word that their next game is Strike Suit Zero. It’s a space shooter in which you fly some kind of transforming space battle thingum, which is called a Strike Suit. DoubleSix claim this means “ludicrous firepower and awesome abilities.” Their hyperbole is backed up with a secondary steel fist of space-features: “Strike Suit Zero features a dazzling art style, high-speed zero gravity vehicular combat, branching-mission structure, ship designs from renowned Mechanical Design engineer Junji Okubo (Appleseed: Ex Machina, Steel Battalion) and music from award-winning sound designer Paul Ruskay (Homeworld).”
THEREFORE: SPACE-BIFF! The game is set to arrive in the “first quarter” of 2012. Cinematic teaser trailer below. (Cinematic, in this instance, being a synonym for “pointless”. Shame.)

Awesome, that trailer is garbage!
10/08/2011 at 02:29 innociv says:
My thoughts exactly.
It’s like 3 screenshots that are broken into blocks and moved around, some some animated text, and just the camera angle changing.
This is a waste of me clicking the play button.
Everyone time a company does this, or any trailer that’s not ingame footage, I instantly lose at least half my interest in it.
The only exception I can think of is Prey2. While not being in game, that CGI trailer was all sorts of awesome.

This trailer is despicable.
I’m not going to judge a game by its trailer though, because I desperately want a good space game. The last one I enjoyed was Freespace 2….
10/08/2011 at 08:30 innociv says:
Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don’t think a mech game is going to be a “good space game”. Good mech game and good space game are two things at odd with one another.
It looks like this is going to have space ships transforming into mechs. Like Macross in space.
Could be a fun game, a fun mech game, but it’s undoubtedly nothing like Freespace 2.
10/08/2011 at 16:20 jokomul says:
awwh :(
I guess I should have done more research. This is pretty much the first I’ve read about this game and the phrase “high-speed zero gravity vehicular combat” gave me hope for a space shooter =\
09/08/2011 at 21:12 Rii says:
Potentially interesting. I hope there’s some depth to it.
10/08/2011 at 08:43 innociv says:
Well it’s made by the team that Made Geometry Wars:Galaxies for the wii, and Burn Zombie Burn. Both are decent games.
Sort of seems like one of those things where they started out making games to get their studio going, and now they’re making the game they wanted to make all along sort of thing.
Usually when studio’s are going through that, that “game they want to make all along” they finally get to turns out to be great.
But as far as depth, I’d guess it’d be pretty simple since it’s a PSN/Live/Steam game. I’d guess a $15-$25 game because of that.

You know, I get it when these kind of teasers are made for the likes of Batman, or when they have some big name attached that they can plaster all over it.
But for a new IP by a not particularly noteworthy indie dev? I mean, seriously?

Ooh, pretty.

Is it a MOBILE suit ? Are PLANTS involved ?
09/08/2011 at 21:40 BAReFOOt says:
I read that as “are PANTS involved?” ^^
If yes, then I hope they’re FANCY PANTS (preferably in orange), and we (the pants and I) are going on great ADVENTURES. ^^
And if not: Ken doll or machine porn (SFW but utterly insane)?
09/08/2011 at 22:16 solaris999 says:
Will special powers involving creative acronyms and phallic weaponry be present?
09/08/2011 at 22:30 BAReFOOt says:
@solaris999: I expect at least one Berzerk-type uber-sword. For use in orbital wars, of course. ;)

BEST BAD TRAILER EVER.

Duke Nukem Trilogy says hello.
Anyhow, the picture sure looks nice, but that was a useless waste of time trailer.

It may only be a teaser, but I’ve known nuns more revealing than that.
09/08/2011 at 21:48 ArcaneSaint says:
I watched the trailer before reading the article, and thought this was something that was gonna be released in three hours. “Huh, how did I miss this? Wouldn’t this have been featured on RPS before?” I thought, then I read the article…

Awful trailer, awesome sounding game.
09/08/2011 at 22:08 Vagrant says:
Hmmm DoubleSix games? Their website says they made Top Gun. How exciting! And simliar in basic concept! I wonder if it was any good.
*checks the evil metacritic*
Oh dear.
(note: Metacritic was for dramatic effect, I was well aware of how bad the game was from a podcast with the IGN reviewer)

Colour me interested.

I love me some pew pew in space. pew pew in space + transformer ships is doubly excellent. Looking forward more news on this!
Also, X: Rebirth should be coming sooner than later, and they claim to have streamlined (reworked from scratch) the interface to make it less dwarf-fortressy!

Mecha based on Appleseed?
Oh hell yes.
09/08/2011 at 23:12 Spider Jerusalem says:
Can we get a hard-hitting RPS feature on how little of a shit us AMAZING PC GAMERS give about cinematic trailers (and I use cinematic so loosely that it won’t even hold up quotation marks)?

This was the worst trailer I have seen in a long time. I literally have no idea what the game is… Is it even a game? :)

awful trailer it was the beginning of Mass Effect for a few seconds then it ended.
10/08/2011 at 00:47 Iskariot says:
Junji Okubo
When I see that name they immediately have my attention. That guy is awesome. He has designed some of the coolest tech stuff I have ever seen. I have been collecting his designs for years.
But sadly I do not expect this game to become really interesting.
I hope I am wrong.

Well, the trailer has certainly told us that Strike Suit Zero is a thing.
10/08/2011 at 05:43 Tuco says:
Waiting for a better trailer and more details, you guys on RPS should really contact Futuremark and investigate about that similar space game they are working on (third one in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTLYU3ngobU )

10/08/2011 at 08:37 Zenicetus says:
One of the Alastair Reynolds novels (it might have been in the main Revelation Space series?) had a sub-plot where a character was lying prone in an extremely high-tech, and very small space ship, used as a sort of espionage scout ship. It was a blend between suit and ship, leaning more towards the “encased in a space ship” design. There’s another famous, fairly recent sci-fi book series based on this idea… the guy in a mini-spaceship suit who never leaves it, and I’m too lazy right now to dig it up and remember the name.
This is an idea with a lot of potential. Not a new idea, but it has great possibilities. Unfortunately, something tells me these developers have never read that type of sci-fi novel, and we’re not going to get that type of game. If it’s what I think it is — another boring FPS-in-space, “haven’t learned anything new about cockpit-level space shooters since Wing Commander” clone — then I’ll take a pass on it. And I love space games.
Why can’t someone do a good one? I-War 2 was the last halfway-decent space game, and it’s been years since that one.

Are you thinking about the Algebraist?
10/08/2011 at 13:36 Ovno says:
I think its Absolution Gap, the bit where the guy gets stuck under a rock fall near the Joker Bridge (if they were called Jokers that is)
10/08/2011 at 16:58 Zenicetus says:
The Algebraist is the one, thanks! And yes, Absolution Gap sounds right for the bit with the ship-suit.
