There’s some game called Fallen City. It looks SHIT/AMAZING. It’s by some idiot/genius called Jim Rossignol and so on and so on. Indeed, what is a Rock, Paper, Shotgun to do when one of its own accidentally plops out a game? Should we not cover it out of modesty and propriety? Should we aim to be “objective”, as if that’s a thing? Should we overly promote it at a cost to informing our readers about other games we haven’t made? Yes. We should do all three. But today instead I’m going to show off some of the screenshots from Big Robot’s lovely urban-renewal-em-up, a Channel 4 game that’s inspired by the Broken Windows theory.

They’re just showing off! Stop showing off, Arenanet. No one likes a show off, ESPECIALLY when they’re pretty. As if the PvE action stuff wasn’t showy enough, the flyovers of intricately produced cities and other superlative-stretching environmental features are just too much. And then that dude totally decks a centaur… and what is that robot thing?!
Really, everyone’s impressed, you can go be humble in the corner now. Christ.

By Any Other Name, Not So Sweet
By Dan Griliopoulos on August 17th, 2011.

Apparently, Paradox CEO Fred Wester’s dream game is set…in Staffordshire, England. Or so you’d think from the very limited CGI trailer we’ve just been shown at GamesCom, which intones “Staffordshire, 1471″ at its beginning and shows a Very Serious armour-clad Lord scowling as his horse climbs through a wood, scowling when he sees a castle under siege, and scowling as he raises his sword and rides away. He probably scowled when his first child was born. Formerly “Project Postman”, this is Paradox’s big mystery game: a roaming medieval melee combat game, now revealed as War Of The Roses.

Markus “Notch” Persson, creator of Minecraft, is currently in dispute with Bethesda over the trademark for “Scrolls”. Mojang’s next game is called Scrolls, which Bethesda says is too similar to The Elder Scrolls. A lack of hilarity ensues. Except now Notch has struck upon a potential solution. A Quake 3 match. He suggests three from Mojang take on three from Bethesda, pick a map each, and compete for the name.

Ubisoft have just got in touch with us to say that as a consequence of the extremely negative reaction to the news that Driver: San Francisco, on top of not supporting wheels and being a month late on PC, would have their disgraceful “always on” DRM, that they have changed their mind about the latter. Hooray! I exclaimed. Until I read it more carefully.
“We’ve heard your feedback regarding the permanent internet connection requirement for Driver and have made the decision to no longer include it. So this means that Driver PC gamers will only need to sign in at game launch but can subsequently choose to play the game offline.”
So, er, what has improved?

There have been all sorts of horror games over the years, including plenty that made no sense at all, but never have I seen one that lets you play as the archetypal “creepy child” from various works of horror fiction. An oversight, perhaps. It’s all to change come “Q4 2011″, however, as Lucius sees you playing as the son of the devil, given the task to kill all the residents of a mansion without letting anyone guess that you are responsible. Interesting concept right? From the looks of things it’s taking a leaf or two out of Agent 47′s notebook, and has nods to The Exorcist and The Shining in this sinister trailer from Gamescom:

Well Fortified

Action RPG Bastion was released on Steam yesterday. I’ve been weaving my way through its enchantingly morose worlds, and although still a good way from the end, I am absolutely ready to tell you Wot I Think.

Remember yesterday’s teaser for Prototype 2? Well here’s the trailer it was teasing, and it’s a bit of a disappointment for me. I was hoping to see some gameplay footage to compare and contrast with the original, but it looks like Activision are focussing solely on the story with this trailer. Still, I always thought the first Prototype had quite slick cut-scenes, and from the looks of this trailer, that’s set to continue with the sequel. There are some heavily edited snippets of in game footage included too I suppose, so it’s worth a watch for that. Oh, trailers… Read the rest of this entry »

A few more (frankly fairly weak) shots of Arkane’s immersiony stealth-assassin game Dishonored (which straddles genre somewhere in a place that is definitely NOT steampunk, but might be regencypunk, or something) have emerged from the honking info-pipes of Gamescom. Head below to check them out, and click for full size.

This First-Person Puzzlement

Toxic Games are getting ready to show the world what they’ve been working on, as they prepare to let the public get their hands on the latest build of Q.U.B.E. at PAX next week. I caught up with Technical Director, Dave Hall, to see how the development is going, and get a better idea of what to expect. Read the rest of this entry »

From the looks of things, it appears as if one sneaky entrant in the Gamescom DOTA 2 tournament has been recording their screen! Here’s a quick video that shows quite a lot of doing nothing at a menu, but then from 1:28 onwards, it’s all in game action. The environment looks nice and lush, and the characters are quite bright and colourful. Definitely cut a line that plunges right into the middle of the MOBA-maelstrom of LoL, HoN and others. Also the commentators sound VERY EXCITED. Check out the footage below:
