Diviner Divinity: Dragon Commander Preview

By Alec Meer on August 24th, 2011.

Yeah, they've heard of Dino Riders. It's an influence, apparently.

If I hadn’t spent an hour playing Saint’s Row: The Third, Larian Studios’ Dragon Commander would comfortably be the oddest game I saw at Gamescom. It’s not odd through and through, however – in fact it’s a focused, ambitious and visually gorgeous brew of roleplaying, strategy and aerial combat, with all manner of batshit silliness peppered about its surface.

It’s already found some notoriety due to the decision to feature a dragon fitted with a jetpack. Smiles Farhang Namdar, lead game designer, “that caused a lot of comments on your site!” It is, however, a decision I am 100% behind. It looks great, it justifies the roaring speed that dragon is capable of, and it makes Dragon Commander instantly distinctive, not rote fantasy. There’s so much more going on than improbable dragon mobility aids, however.

Killian The Name Of: Prey 2

By Adam Smith on August 24th, 2011.

Prey 2’s Game Director, Chris Rhinehart, has been talking through the events seen in the early trailers for the game. There are three separate commentary videos, the last of which hit the internet yesterday. Here’s some thoughts and analysis on what we see, what we’re told and what remains totally unclear. Before you start watching though, one thing that doesn’t remain unclear is the ending to the first game, so if you’re planning to play through first, come back when you’re done.

Steam Is Offering Refunds For From Dust

By John Walker on August 24th, 2011.

Scenes inside the hearts of players.

With peculiar timing, Valve seem to finally be offering refunds on From Dust. Customers who bought the game under the belief its DRM required a one-time only activation angrily responded to the revelations (as brought to the world by the fine eyebrows of RPS) that the game required a connection for every launch. Demands for refunds were being met with stony silences in every direction, with Ubisoft pointing customers to the retailers. And while there were rumours of Steam giving some money back, most were being met by their questionable stance that they don’t offer refunds for anything. Well, despite the recent announcement that the DRM would soon be patched out, that seems to be changing, as it appears (from the text of Valve’s emails) Ubisoft have specifically asked Valve to return the cash. (Let’s put in a disclaimer here – this is based on reports from a couple of readers, and Valve are notoriously fickle in these regards.)

Space Marine Demo Live, Not (Officially) In UK

By Jim Rossignol on August 24th, 2011.

The demo for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is now live on Steam, unless you live in the UK, where it is mysteriously absent. I’ve contacted THQ again to ask why this might be.

It can apparently still be downloaded in the UK via this link.

Portal: No Escape Is A Short Film

By Jim Rossignol on August 24th, 2011.

It’s a pretty fantastic short film. You can watch it below. The film was apparently directed by Dan Trachtenberg, and stars Danielle Rayne. It was first shown at SDCC earlier this summer.

Hefty: Red Orchestra 2 Multiplayer Footage

By John Walker on August 23rd, 2011.

At least they've got warm hats.

Remember when shooters took place in the olden days? Red Orchestra still does, withis its Heroes Of Stalingrad sequel very much remaining in Ultra War The Second. Below is a hefty chunk of multiplayer footage, which one interested in the game might be wise to watch.

A Surprising Hour With Rage

By Alec Meer on August 23rd, 2011.

No, that's not the one I fancied

While Dishonored was the best thing I saw at Gamescom by a long shot, bagging the bonus invisible award of ‘most pleasant surprise’ was id’s soon-to-be-released Rage. I feel like I’ve been seeing Rage forever by this point – so many trailers, so many preview events, even some hands-on time. And I’ve always thought of it as this fast, dumb, relentless, obvious thing – which, it transpires, is because I’ve always been shown it as if it is. I’ve been shown or dropped straight into fighting, rather than approaching the game at the pace it’s designed to play at or nosing at the world it’s built. Now, I feel completely different about it.

First Aliens: Colonial Marines Trailer

By Adam Smith on August 23rd, 2011.

EDIT: Ah, it’s from Gamespot.
There’s nothing official from SEGA, but it looks like this might be the new trailer for Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines, below. It has come skittering out of the darkness on YouTube, but there’s a good chance SEGA will set the flamethrowers on it if this is a leak.

Regarding the trailer itself, there’s plenty of frantic shooting and yelling but the edit builds up the tension and horror as well. It’s the first time I’ve seen enough of the game to shift from mild anticipation to fervent excitement. Some moments look scripted but they appear to be scares rather than action sequences. If the game can balance the gungho of Aliens with the dread of the first film, it should be a winner.

Ludum Dare 21: Ships, Spikes, Batpunching

By Adam Smith on August 23rd, 2011.

Ludum Dare, ho!
Ludum Dare, for those who don’t know it, is a competition that challenges people to code games on a specific theme, ‘Escape’ this time around, within 48 hours. I could probably spend 48 years trying to make a game, but it would end well. As a boy, I once programmed a Commodore 64 to draw some flags but I copied the code from a magazine. That’s what we did instead of modding in the Eighties. It was radical. Here in 2011 I have spent slightly less time than these games took to make playing through a bunch and bringing you my pick of the crop, below.

Impressions: The Book Of Living Magic

By John Walker on August 23rd, 2011.

A typical evening in RPS's local.

I have been told to play The Book Of Living Magic by so many people. Even Jay of JayIsGames instructed me to do so. A point and click adventure embedded in a website, that has variously been described as charming and reminiscent of the joy of childhood books. So okay, okay, I took a look.
