The Gemini Wars developer chap Bruno Cesteiro got in touch to let us know he’s done a new video of his space strategy game, that’s the 4X shootybang you see picture above by the way, and I’ve posted that below. The video explains a bit more about how the game will play, with Cesteiro explaining how the game will handle some of the traditional 4X elements, and also how the battles will play out. Worth a look, as this is an interesting project. (If you are interested by space strategy, a propensity for which the odds are good…)

The New Chess: Rooks Keep
By Jim Rossignol on August 23rd, 2011.

Remember Battlechess? It was like chess, but… well it was chess, only the pieces duffed each other up for your amusement. The same sort of thing seems to be true of Rune Storm’s Rooks Keep, which is based in the grand old game, but “where players battle using brutal, animated pieces in a gothic, fantasy themed setting. The blood, weapons and remains of the fallen litter the arena as players fight for glory in this barbaric take on Chess.”
BARBARIC CHESS. You can see why this excites me, obviously. Any chess sequel is pretty exciting, but barbarism just seals the deal. It’s not just chess, either. The game will apparently offer a number of turn-based battle modes of which chess is simply a variant. But can they best chess wit their new-fangled pawn manipulations? We’ll find out soon. The Rune Storm team have sent over a new trailer, which is below.

A Flipping Good Time Is Flipping Decent
By Adam Smith on August 23rd, 2011.

PAX Prime, the increasingly gargantuan expo set up by the chaps at Penny Arcade, is almost upon us. One of the most enjoyable parts of the whole shindig is the selection of the PAX 10, a group of indie games selected to enjoy the exposure that such a large platform can bring. Super Meat Boy and Bastion were both picked last year; not bad company to be in. This year there are some familiar titles and one that’s entirely new to me. From DigiPen, A Flipping Good Time is a platformer with a gravity switch mechanic you may have seen before, but do not be deterred. This is fun times. And it won’t cost you a penny.
After Forever: Borderlands 2 Preview
By Alec Meer on August 23rd, 2011.

Gearbox have got some explaining to do. No, nothing to do with Duke Nukem Forever – but because, back when they were first promoting Borderlands, they emphasised what a risk it was, how unusual to have something new rather than a sequel, and why the media and gamers should thus give their RPG-shooter their full attention even though it wasn’t a known quantity.
Now, of course, they’re making a sequel, and once again asking for our full attention. Should we give it?

Rules For Games: Do & Don’t #4
By John Walker on August 23rd, 2011.

It’s time for the return of my irregular series in which I tell games developers exactly what they must do and not do if they want to avoid being flayed and rolled in salt. You can see the rest of these rules here. It’s quite simple: obey my commands and everyone will be happy. No one needs to lose a life.
PES 2012: This Year, Feet Meet Balls
By Adam Smith on August 23rd, 2011.
Like a whisper on the breeze or a particularly quiet spectre, the foot-to-ball season has begun once more. Of course, the quiet clamour of millionaires hoofing calfpelts is often drowned out by more mundane matters such as collapsing regimes and a crumbling global economy. That’s a joke of course. The global economy has crumbled. It is constituted entirely of crumbs. But, to return to the point at hand, the silly season is upon us and not enough people are repeatedly telling you that. Konami shall be honouring this glorious occasion with the release of PES 2012. There will be demos available very soon. That’s right. Demos. Plural. Excited? Read on!
Impressions: The Space Marine Demo
By Alec Meer on August 23rd, 2011.

Hot damn! Now that did the trick. I’m prone to worrying about what game I should play right after finishing something great. It’s a science, like which album or song do you play right after something that’s lifted your spirits or got you in a singin’ mood. You don’t want something that’s going to shut you up. It’s the same with games: picking the wrong bet as a follow-up can sour the experience, or at least fail to take advantage of my mental momentum. My mood could be ruined. I could be left adrift for a few days, every game seeming strangely unappealing. Last night, I got it right – following up Deus Ex: Human Revolution with the Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine demo. Hot damn. Aside from the whole machine-assisted warrior element, these are two very different games. After some 30 hours of sneaking, hacking and pondering in DX3, mindlessly eviscerating Orks by the dozen with a Power Axe was exactly right, exactly the coda I needed.

He Rues The Day: Wargame
By Dan Griliopoulos on August 23rd, 2011.

Roving reporter Dan Griliopoulos has left Alec in Cologne and is heading deeper into Europe, writing up the best of Gamescom as he goes.
We’re driving through the Black Forest when my thoughts turn to Wargame: European Escalation. Germany’s Schwarz Wald might be famous around the world solely as the origin of an outrageously opulent cherry cake – the schwarzwaldkirschetorte – but it’s also at the heart of the country that’s borne the brunt of European warfare for twenty centuries. That’s notable for us, as it’s also the central area that the two factions of the Cold War would likely have fought through and over if the war had turned hot, as the overwhelming Russian conventional forces pushed towards France. Wargame, the new title from the creators of RUSE, explores this area and the war that never happened, but which the world braced itself against for forty years.

Serious Sam: Double D Is Gun Crazy
By Adam Smith on August 23rd, 2011.
Not too long ago, John brought you words and pictures in an attempt to describe the madness of Serious Sam: Double D. Now, Mommy’s Best Games have sent an ambassador forth to describe things in his own words. And he has some footage for us all. It’s trailer time and I’d highly recommend having some tranquilisers on hand for when this one’s done.
Let’s Have A Look At Metro: Last Light
By Jim Rossignol on August 23rd, 2011.

The sentinels at the VG247 news-tower have spotted the distant arrival of twelve minutes of Metro: Last Light footage. Needless to say, I’ve embedded it below for your watching pleasure. And I must say: crikey on the atmospherics. There’s quite a bit of sneaking about and knifing people in the back, but much more straight-up firefight action, and it all looks extraordinary. Not only that but it sounds extraordinary. The audio design is fabulous.

Sword of the Stars II Cinematic Amuses Me
By Jim Rossignol on August 23rd, 2011.

You know how I feel about ludicrously overwrought voiceovers, and the Sword of the Stars II opening cinematic, which you can see below, this year’s winner in that regard. It shows “the Lords of Winter themselves in action – the ancient Suul’ka have returned to their lost empire and are seeking to regain the power they once had”. Grumpy space tentacle beasts are melodramatic! Who would have guessed it?
I had a look at the game itself a couple of months back, and expect to see more before it is launched next month.
