It’s interesting to see how much one man can do with an engine like UDK. Rob Hale has taken a while to get his twin-stick shooter Waves into a shape that he’s happy with, but the end of the road is close now, and I think it’s actually one of the more interesting UDK projects out there. You can see it in action below. It’ll also be making an appearance at the Eurogamer Expo later this month. The game should be out later this year.

Sometimes it feels like I’ve played these games a million times. And they all shoot for the same aesthetics, too!

I also can’t help but feel that I have watched this trailer at least five times before
I suppose I’m just not the kind of person it is designed to attract

Nevard: Well, we’ve seen some trailers from this game before, so that’s not too strange.

I wish the next person who wants to do an arena shooter would do a sequel to Crimsonland instead.

Yes, what Urthman said! Definitely that!

The Geometry Wars comparison is an easy one to make, but the video feels like watching Bangai-O.
No absurd missile swarms, but the flow & pacing, as well as the little slowdown blast effect brings back memories from that game.

@vagrant That’s not an effect you actually have control over it. Right mouse button slows down time briefly (it also doubles the points scored while in slowmo)

That’s it, shut it all down. This comment thread has officially been won.

Looks like a nice game but seems so… Not really original. But depending on the price I might pick this up as it seems like a game that could amuse me for a few hours here and there.

My biggest problem with Geometry Wars is that there wasn’t enough of it, so this looks just about perfect.

The beta that was circulated to the subscribers was a bit of fun. If this is appropriately priced I’ll definitely get it. Would be nice for a demo beforehand.

As a RPS subscriber, I tried this game several months ago, it was very pleasant!
IT may look at first like something we have seen already, but the execution is really nicely done.
I remember my only problem with it was the HUD and menus which were a bit hard to read, but the rest was really nice.

Is UDK ideally suited for ball rolling physics or something?

Do any other mathematicians find it strange a game called waves has an a rectangular logo and gameplay revolving around hexagons.. The only reciprocal thing on the screen is the gun you fire! I demand accurate naming!
That and I think this looks pretty crappy, like an easter egg for Tyrian. More game, please.

From the screenie at the top I was expecting something Tempest-y, instead of Geometry Wars in a barrel.

I love these type of games, this one looks great! Only judging from the video here, but the controls look very responsive and the frenetic action and slo mo look like a good time. A definite purchase!
09/09/2011 at 07:00 BurningPet says:
so what do you do in this game beside the obvious shooting?

I find it funny that so many dismiss this game with “LOL Geometry Wars,” when GW always felt like a poor-man’s Mutant Storm to me. ah, well
09/09/2011 at 08:09 JimFixIt says:
Mutant Storm now there’s a game. My version no longer works for some reason and pom pom have stopped selling it. I’ve got to wait for the new games to be made for PC, it’s taking forever.

The recent Scoregasm demo (full version due out sometime this month) might well scratch a similar itch.

I tried Charlies Bullet Candy and liked it, a very hard (but satisfying) game. I’ll defo keep my eyes on scoregasm.
