Deadshot: Arkham’s Cannon-Wristed Nutter

By Adam Smith on September 16th, 2011.

Look at him. Detecting.

More Arkham City footage this morning, which makes me very happy indeed. It’s the reveal of a new villain, and we all know villains are one of the best things about comic book games. The footage comes courtesy of Gametrailers and as well as showing some footage of the game, it has excitable fellow Sefton Hill giving some background on another villain out to cause mischief and mayhem. This time it’s Deadshot, the world’s greatest assassin. That’s right, all those historical wrist-bladed assassins can step aside, because Deadshot has wrist-mounted cannons. BOOM. Take a look.

Welcome To The Arthouse: IndieCade 2011

By Adam Smith on September 16th, 2011.

It's a logo. I've got nothing.

IndieCade kicks off on October 6th and that’s as good a reason for October the 6th as any I can think of. If you’re not aware of it, IndieCade is a festival, in its fifth year, that aims to celebrate all that is good in the world of indie games. Creators submit games and a roster of finalists is chosen for the event, at which they get lots of helpful exposure, such as these words that I’m writing at this very moment. Now that the 35 finalists have been announced, I’m going to take a look at the most interesting ones. By which I mean most of the ones that aren’t iOS games.

The Many Lights of Metro: Last Light

By Alec Meer on September 16th, 2011.

THQ and 4A’s Metro 2033 sequel promises a ‘last light’. I would like to take issue with this, for I can see over ten different lights across the following five new screenshots of the forthcoming post-apocalyptic, subterranean beast’n'manshooter. Who wants to call trade descriptions?

Glad Tidings: Portal Free Until Sep 20th

By Alec Meer on September 16th, 2011.

Free cake for everyone

Goodness, that happened with absolutely no fanfare. The original Portal, if you somehow don’t already own it, can now be installed and played for free via Steam. I’ve just checked it on a spare Steam account and it works just dandy. This is true of both the PC and the Mac version, by the way. If you’re determined to pay money for it, you can still cough up for The Orange Box or the Portal 1+2 package, but just Portal itself now defiantly costs no-pennies. Grab it from here.

Update: transpires that this is only available until September 20th, as part of a games and learning initiative from Valve. So get your skates on, yes? As long as you install the game before the expiry date, it’s yours to keep forever.

You can see more on Valve’s “Learn With Portals” program, wherein they’re encouraging kids to create Portal levels themselves, in the rather charming video below.

Day In The Strife: Dragon Age 2 DLC

By Adam Smith on September 16th, 2011.

He's not acting his age

BioWare have just released a trailer for a fresh chunk of Dragon Age 2 DLC, Mark of the Assassin. I’m not sure how big a chunk is – in fact, all I know about this one is that it involves an “impregnable fortress” that you’ll end up pregnating, “monsters” that you’ll end up killing and an elf voiced by Felicia Day, she of The Guild and Dr Horrible, among other things (presumably) that I don’t know about. In fact, that seems to be the main selling point. It’s mentioned well before any details regarding content other than voice recordings. In fact, it’s pretty much the only detail mentioned at all, apart from the fact that this is “story” DLC rather than “item” DLC. Who wants more Dragon Age narrative? Anyone? See what you can glean below.

Prosperity & Cool Sci-Fi Tech: Anno 2070

By Lewie Procter on September 16th, 2011.

Half of these building are used for storing DRM servers.
The surprise futuristic entry in the Anno citybuilding series – Anno 2070 – has got a new video, showing off 3 minutes of mostly game footage. I hope you don’t think I’m crazy when I say I’m picking up a vague (very vague) Alpha Centauri vibe from this trailer. Sure, there’s no mind worms or nerve-staples on display, but it’s still pushing some of the same buttons. Read the rest of this entry »

PopCap Are Getting Weirder: New PvZ Song

By John Walker on September 15th, 2011.

Wabby wabby woo.

You know the phrase, “more money than sense”? PopCap have an awful lot of money…

Plants Vs. Zombies continues to be a sensation on every format it touches – I’ve heard that it’s soon coming out for digital calculators and answer-phones – which is presumably bringing in enough money to pay enough people to create something as spectacularly silly as the latest… trailer? Video? Proof that there’s something in the air conditioning at their headquarters?

Like A Record: Rotion Alpha Impressions

By Adam Smith on September 15th, 2011.

kaleidoscope eyes

I’ve been playing the alpha version of a new shape-popping game called Rotion. When I read that it was a shape-popping game I expected it to be like Pang or Bubble Bobble. It’s actually more like flOw crossed with one of those buzz wire games that used to scare me as a child because I thought I was under threat of severe electrocution. Rotion doesn’t scare me but it does frustrate me a bit, though not always in a bad way. It’s up on Desura, with a demo, and a £3.49 preorder gives access to every build right up until release. There’s a trailer after the jump along with some thoughts.

Inside The Tech Inside: The Swindle

By Lewie Procter on September 15th, 2011.

Achieved With The GiANT Engine
You may remember we exclusively revealed Size Five Games’ The Swindle all the way back in July. Details have been scarce on it ever since, but I managed to sneak into the Size Five blog, where I found Dan sharing fresh news of the engine that The Swindle will be running on. Here he is, in his own highly quotable words: Read the rest of this entry »

InMomentum InTransition To Unreal 3 Engine

By John Walker on September 15th, 2011.

Coo, it's even prettier now.

Interesting news for InMomentum, the splendid esoteric free running platform… thing. They’ve just been approved by Epic to move over to the Unreal 3 engine. The game, currently in beta, was previously using the Unreal Development Kit. But now they say they’re able to do a lot more, with a more flexible engine and greater polish. As project lead Norbert Varga explains to us, after praising UDK, “Ever since we started working with UE3, things started to work a lot better.” But there’s a lot more going on in the colourful geometric world, too.

Guild Wars 2 Wants To Show You The Asura

By John Walker on September 15th, 2011.

It's all far too Phantasy Star Blah blah blah to me.

New video footage and photographs from the Guild Wars 2 tourist board have arrived. This time it’s details on the creepy Asura race. I don’t trust those little goblin things. You could say I’m an… Asuracist! Gosh, I’m funny. Take a look at the new footage, and some new screenshots, below.
