Observant eyes may have noticed that there’s a new expansion out for Gratuitous Space Battles, the fleet building slice of indie goodness from Positech. While this fresh bit of DLC doesn’t add any new game modes, it does add 10 new ships, three new pieces of equipment and a new scenario. The new ships belong to the titular Parasites faction, who sound very unpleasant indeed. Swanning around the galaxy looking for host species to grow their larvae in? It’s not on. There’s a trailer showing some particularly gratuitous space battles below and a new pic from Positech’s upcoming Gratuitous Tank Battles for your eyes to look at.

More than a bit in fact. Quite a lot, but “Quite a lot” wouldn’t fit in the headline. So here’s the deal with Toys Vs Nightmares: It’s mechanically heavily inspired by Popcap’s wonderful gardening tower defence, Plants Vs Zombies, but instead of using flowers and vegetables to fight off hordes of the undead, you command an army of children’s toys against all sorts of nightmarish monsters. It doesn’t quite match the level of polish that you get from Popcap’s games, but the art is really nice, and it’s certainly got better presentation than most free webgames. There’s even a simple game to play whilst the main game is loading: I’m only sorry I couldn’t include a game for you to play whilst reading this post.
The difficulty seems to be a bit steeper than PvZ, perhaps it’s designed with veterans of the games that inspired it in mind. Play it on NewGrounds here.

Lucasarts made many of my favourite games of the ‘90s, a time when I was a very happy gamer indeed. There were all the classic adventure games and then there were the space sims, X-Wing and TIE Fighter. I sometimes forget just how good they were and then I get confused about the fact that I’m not playing a brand spanking new version right now. It really has been a while, hasn’t it? But perhaps the wait is over. The eagle eyes of Gamespot have noticed that Lucasarts are looking to hire developers to work on three new titles, one of which is an aerial combat game. Speculation, ho!

There’s a museum in Kentucky entirely dedicated to promulgating a literal interpretation of the Genesis poem to the masses. And a big part of that, for these hardcore Creationists, is insisting that dinosaurs and humans co-existed. So sure, you might want to weep and tear your clothes at the countless millions of dollars being spent on a temple dedicated to spreading what most would consider ignorance. But then at the same time, this is a place that explains there were dinosaurs on Noah’s ark. Which is almost too good a mad thing to not exist in the world.
Although you could argue that money could have been spent helping the poor and needy, with everyone involved instead watching trailers for Primal Carnage. The latest of which is below.

Family Misfortunes
By Adam Smith on September 15th, 2011.

I’m going to die in dishonour, my people bowed under the yoke of my bastard neighbours. I’ll try to prevent it, I’ve got a yoke of my own after all, but it’s going to happen. I’m playing Sengoku, you see, the new grand strategy game from the clever people at Paradox. I’ve been looking forward to it for ages and now it’s finally time to start my nefarious domination of Japan. But I’m already worried. It all seemed safe at first; it looks enough like Europa Universalis III (same engine) and feels enough like Crusader Kings that I was confident for at least a few minutes. But the more I see, the more I realise that I’m out of my depth. Should a mildly neurotic Englishman, wired up on coffee, ever take charge of a Japanese clan at such a turbulent point in the nation’s history? I think not and I’m going to show you exactly why that is.

Trackmania 2 Canyon is available right now as a digital purchase straight from its very own official website. It’s the game with an obscene amount of player-controlled cars racing around thousands upon thousands of physically impossible tracks. The game uses Nadeo’s own ManiaPlanet system for updates and downloads, which is why it’s only available direct from the website. That may change but don’t count on it. As we reported previously, despite Ubisoft being the publishers they have stated that there will be no always-online DRM check. John checked exactly how the game does work offline and his findings are below, along with a launch trailer.

When is a launch trailer not a launch trailer? That’s right, kids, when the game isn’t due out for another couple of weeks. That’s the awkward situation Renegops has thrust us into: It has just came out on the consoles, but isn’t going to be gracing the PC with it’s presence until later on this month. Still, we’ve got pretty moving pictures to keep ourselves entertained in the meantime: Read the rest of this entry »

I stopped paying attention to the Fallout: New Vegas DLCs a while back. Not out of a lack of interest mind, it’s just that I have a preorder for the Goatee Edition from Amazon, from when they accidentally listed it early, and it was only priced at £20. I’ll just dive back into the Mojave Wasteland once that gets shipped to me, and I’ll gorge myself all the DLC in one tasty feast. This fourth DLC release for New Vegas is titled Lonesome Road. When you come, you’ll walk it alone… Read the rest of this entry »

A Stranger, in a strange land
By Alec Meer on September 14th, 2011.

Supergiant’s sombre action-RPG Bastion was released on PC a few weeks back; John has already told you what he thinks of it, but in the last few days I’ve been exploring its shattered world for myself. It’s put me in a funny place. Spoilers of a sort await, so don’t read this unless you’ve played the game, don’t intend to, or don’t give a toss about narrative events in a hack and slash game.
I was sad when it ended. Forlorn, even. For me, that isn’t a regular state of affairs. Even with games I love, I’m oddly grateful when they wrap up – there’s a sense of accomplishment to it, and a relief that they didn’t string things out too long or defeat my sense of goodwill with a BioShock-boss or one too many achingly earnest cutscenes. Bastion, though: a true wave of sadness hit me as the credits rolled.

How long we have waited for another date with a boy named Max. Hardly fair to call him a boy any more, of course – he’s thick of waist, hirsute of chin and, after a time, shaved of head. The New York City cop has moved to Brazil, times are hard and his body is soft. Of course, he still has his best friends by his side – his best friends being an assortment of military-grade weaponry.
This is Max Payne 3, and this is its first-ever trailer – composed entirely of in-engine footage, apparently.
