Dead Island Receiving Day One Bandages

By John Walker on September 5th, 2011.

Come on in, the water's lovely.

Dead Island is out tomorrow in the American States, but not until Friday for the Eurochaps. I’m playing it right now! (We’ll have a WIT up in the middle of the week, to confuse everyone in all territories.) I’m also not encountering quite as many bugs as others have spotted in some of the reviews that have appeared today. But that’s not stopping the appearance of a day one patch, due out tomorrow along with the game, that will fix an impressive thirty-seven issues. You can read them for your own amusement below.

No Disc Required: Sonic CD Heading To PC

By Lewie Procter on September 5th, 2011.

The early/mid 90s was a confusing time to love Sega games. Sure, they were still pumping out classic software left, right and centre, but they couldn’t make their mind up about which piece of home console hardware they wanted you to own the most. The Mega CD was a CD based expansion for their trusty Mega Drive, which let you play many of the same games as you could play on cartridges, just with higher audio fidelity and price tags. There was also a few Mega CD exclusive games though, probably most noteworthy was their flagship platforming mascot’s imaginatively titled Sonic CD, which is now heading to PC (again). Impressions: Wonderputt

By Adam Smith on September 5th, 2011.

Why are crazy golf courses mostly coastal entities?

Lots of people are talking about Wonderputt, even though it’s a Flash crazy golf game…wait, come back! It’s a Flash crazy golf game with alien abductions and rocket ships! I can’t help but notice that people are still walking away, pretending to have urgent appointments elsewhere, perhaps with more complex and worthy games. Well, forget those games for a minute. I made Wonderputt sound zany, didn’t I, with all that clamouring about alien abductions? It’s not zany, I promise you. Although the voiceover in the trailer below also makes it sound like it might be wacky, which is another thing it’s not.

Human Devolution: DX3 in DX1

By Alec Meer on September 5th, 2011.

Pro-tip: you can read these words

The more modern values of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, transplanted into the resolutely year 2000 Deus Ex 1. Admittedly, this video occasionally strays into tiresome ‘THE PAST WAS NECESSARILY BETTER AND EVERYTHING IS RUBBISH NOWADAYS’ whingeotron territory, but it’s nanotongue-in-cheek enough to elicit a good few guffaws, I think. What if… JC Denton had elbow swords? And augmented vision? And could only rescue Tracer Tong if he’d preordered?

Sideway: No Merlot Allowed

By Lewie Procter on September 5th, 2011.

I’ve liked the look of this one for a while, but I had seen the words “PSN exclusive” being bandied around. Reasuringly, the developers Playbrains (who you may remember as the folks that brought us that Madballs game) recently confirmed that yes, Sideway is “definitely coming to PC – via Steam”. That screenshot doesn’t really do the game justice, so embedded beneath is a trailer that shows off the unique set of mechanics that set it apart from the competition. Read the rest of this entry »

On My First Whistle: Starpoint Gemini DLC

By John Walker on September 5th, 2011.

American Gladiators was always eighty times better, anyway.

When I see the initials “DLC” not preceded by the word “free” it always makes me wimper a little and remember the effort that once went into expansion packs. Fortunately the generous folks behind Starpoint Gemini have remembered the correct prefix for their freshly announced new content for the space tactic-em-up, called Gladiators.

Tiny Team Fortress 2D: Masjin

By Adam Smith on September 5th, 2011.

It will bring your computer to its knees

More games should receive updates like this. “Mucus grenade buffed significantly, maybe even too significantly!” The fact that there is a mucus grenade in the first place is startling and compelling, the fact that it may have become too powerful demands research and investigation. The game with the possibly overbuffed mucus grenade is free indie team-based shooter Masjin. The best way I can describe it is the sidescrolling bastard child of Team Fortress, Worms and Minecraft. With vehicles. It’s a fantastic example of a game that promotes proper teamwork while also finding time to celebrate chaos and destruction. However, there are problems. This is a game in need of a stronger online community so, to herald its latest and potentially final update, I point you in its direction to bolster those ranks.

Wot I Think: Achron

By Richard Cobbett on September 5th, 2011.

Alright, get ready, 'cause I'm about to time-stomp you so hard, your GDI Refinery's going to explode!

Meet the time-travelling RTS that should be impossible. It’s called Achron, and we asked Richard to pull off the equally impossible feat of not calling it ‘Archon’ even once. That’s a completely different game. But we digress. Here’s Wot He Thought.

Agent 47 To Attend Eurogamer Expo

By Lewie Procter on September 5th, 2011.

Perhaps not in person, but in spirit. IO Interactive are sending lead producer Hakan Abrak to give a presentation on Hitman: Absolution to the good people attending E2 this year. We’ve already had a sneaky peak at some early footage of Hitman 5 in action, but hopefully this will be a chance to see it being played properly, and prod at the mind of the bloke producing it.

We’ll be there, front row hopefully. Listen out for me asking Hakan how many guns are in his game.

Get Physical: Origin Sells Boxed Valve Games

By Adam Smith on September 5th, 2011.

Powered by love

There was much excitement when Origin users in the US noticed a buy two get one free promotion that includes three Valve titles: Left 4 Dead GOTY Edition, Left 4 Dead 2 and Counterstrike: Source. Could it mean the end of Valve and EA’s digital distribution feud? Of course not. The games aren’t being digitally distributed through Origin’s service, they are retail copies (in boxes made of actual matter like in olden times) that will be delivered to users as part of the offer. Perhaps an EA man will simply step out of the ‘Pizza Delivery’ van that has been inexplicably parked across the street from your house since you signed that EULA and leave the parcel on your doorstep. Or not. At retail, Valve products have been published by EA for many a moon, so this could be seen as nothing more than a good way to free up some warehouse space.

The Jet Set: Dragon Commander Videos

By Adam Smith on September 5th, 2011.

The Princess Died

If dragons with jetpacks and skeleton princesses are your favourite things, Dragon Commander is being created specifically for you. It’s not often such niche tastes are accounted for, so count yourself very lucky indeed. Alec was pleasantly surprised during his encounter with Larian Studios’ RPG, strategy, dragon-action hybrid at Gamescom a couple of weeks ago and now a developer walkthrough has found its way online in video form. It’s the same section of the game that Alec saw so there’s nothing explicitly new here, but it’s good to realise the article wasn’t the product of a fever-dream. The world map truly is reminiscent of Small World and there really is a skeleton princess wearing fruit wedged into a corset in order to crudely simulate the fully-fleshed female form. It’s in two parts and is well worth a watch, if only for the nonchalant way in which the jetpack is introduced.
