Race to the Finish: End of Nations

By Dan Griliopoulos on September 2nd, 2011.

Petroglyph and Trion Worlds are close to releasing End Of Nations, and they are hoping that it will change things for the MMORTS genre. Seeing the game at Gamescom has given us some clues as to whether they are going to realise that dream.

Aeroplane Over The Sea: SkyDrift

By Lewie Procter on September 2nd, 2011.

You may remember that Quinns fellow told us about SkyDrift all the way back in May. It’s the one with the planes. Developer Digital Reality thought it was time to let us all check in on the development, by way of a series of video diaries. Here’s parts one and two: Read the rest of this entry »

Texas Stranger: The Real Texas

By Adam Smith on September 2nd, 2011.

He's not in Kansas anymore
There may well be only one epic action RPG you need in the nebulous ‘Coming Soon’ bracket and it speaks for itself.

The Real Texas is an action adventure game that plays like a mashup of Zelda: Link to the Past and Ultima VI. Sam, an ordinary Texas rancher, is on holiday in England when he falls into a blue portal and lands in The Strange Texas.”

A trailer follows. It includes clothes shopping, chickens and a floating eye-cube called Yolanda.

Mods And Ends: The Worry of Newport

By Adam Smith on September 2nd, 2011.

But more wonderful than the lore of old men and the lore of books is the secret lore of ocean.
I use the word potential all the time. To the extent that it becomes annoying to the people around me. But it is an important word, especially in this still youthful industry. It’s locked in the bizarre ideas forming in the mind and on the hard drive of the smallest indie developer, and it’s evident in the expanding technical prowess of the largest blockbusters. It’s not just in the future though. I also love the potential of what already exists, the engines that have been built and the histories they have produced. And that’s why I love mods. They can make the old new in so many ways: balancing, tweaking, expanding, subverting, or being something self-contained and entirely new. Take The Worry of Newport. It’s a self-contained, Lovecraftian mystery that’s pretending to be a mod for Crysis.

On A Roll: Rock Of Ages Final Trailer

By Lewie Procter on September 2nd, 2011.

It’s the dawn of the age of the Rock of Ages, or it will be come next Wednesday when it releases via Steam. It’s out on the Xbox already but Ace Team have said that this release date disparity was not because of any exclusivity agreements, “it is just about a small team with a lot of work.” To make up for the minor PC delay, they’re including a complete OST with the PC release, and the PC version even has an exclusive playable “Troll Face” boulder, which is a beautiful thing. Here’s the release trailer, and it is looking like something special: Read the rest of this entry »

Just Deserts: Dungeon Siege III DLC

By Adam Smith on September 2nd, 2011.

Ray Harryhausen receives royalties every time you look at an animated skeleton
Yesterday I spoke to two people about Dungeon Siege III. One claimed that playing the demo was such an agonising experience that she cancelled her preorder, the other boldly stated that it was the finest ARPG of its time. I was tempted to make them fight it out by furiously clicking on one another but it didn’t seem right. Not in the real world. Today, there is news of a big chunk of DLC due in October. You’ll have to shell out for this, around $9.99, but it does sound there’ll be a healthy amount of content. That’s if you consider searching for treasure and ruins in a desert full of monsters healthy. New monsters and items are par for the course, but there’s more! An enchanting system will allow you to make your shiniest loot even more shiny and you’ll also be able to respec your character. Cue cries of: “It should have been in the base game!” No word if there’ll be a further patch for us PC folk alongside the DLC. Personally, I stopped playing the game before the keybinding patch so don’t know how much that did to improve things. Any thoughts?

Rings Around The World: DCUO DLC

By Adam Smith on September 2nd, 2011.

Giant boots and gloves are the mark of a man
This week, DC began rebuilding their entire fictional universe from the ground up. Every title in the range has rebooted to issue number one, severing the future from decades of convoluted and conflicting continuity. I give them twelve months before this ‘new’ universe has split into fifteen multiverses filled with amnesiac clones of every major character whose only differentiating feature will be inverted costume colours or a small beard. Meanwhile, nobody seems to have told SOE who are still expanding the old universe in DC Universe Online. The latest expansion, out for free on September 6th, adds the Green Lantern Corps to the game, along with the Light power set. Players can also join up with the Sinestro Corps if they are villainous sorts. Being evil means you’ll have a magical yellow chainsaw, as seen in the trailer below.

See Warhammer: Space Marine’s War Hammer

By Lewie Procter on September 2nd, 2011.

Stop!
Relic’s manly man-killing simulator – Space Marine – is but a week away from unleashing it’s own brand of intense violence, blood and gore upon the world, and THQ have sent us another video to herald it’s arrival. Here we get to see the “Thunder Hammer” turning orcs into clouds of red mist. Delightful. Read the rest of this entry »

Defense Of The Questions: League of Legends

By Dan Griliopoulos on September 2nd, 2011.

At GamesCom we had a talk with producer Travis George and designer Ryan Scott from League of Legends. Dan Griliopoulos was left feeling like the world’s biggest doofus, for not having played their game and for having fallen behind on the special language employed in competitive gaming.

DICE On BF3′s Regenerating Tank Health

By Jim Rossignol on September 2nd, 2011.

DICE have been going into a bit more detail on the vehicles that will appear in Battlelfield 3. Lots of interesting stuff on specialisation. I’m not sure about this bit, though: “If you back up and take cover, you give yourself a chance to let the vehicle armor recover, just like your soldier heals up when going into cover. This is a new feature in Battlefield 3 where lightly damaged vehicles recover their armor after a set amount of time (if kept away from enemy fire). Instead of promoting a gung-ho attitude at all times, this means that the driver who keeps his cool and adapts to any given situation will also be able to keep his vehicle in working order for longer. It is basically our way of giving smart non-Engineers a fighting chance to keep his vehicle in the battle.” Yes, I get that it says “lightly” damaged, but still seems odd to me. Like a tank picking up a medkit odd. Seems to defeat the point of working with engineers, to me.

Anyway, in case you’d forgotten why we’re excited about Battlefield 3′s multiplayer, I’ve added the Caspian Border footage below. Mmm.
